Polish history: please help

  • Friday I have the exam of Central-Eastern Europe history.

In my book it's not clear the difference between sanacja and endecja. It is implied that endecja is the continuation of sanacja, but with more right-wing politics. In wikipedia it is written that endecja means national-democracy. But in the book national-democracy was the party of Dmowski, who was the direct rival of Pilsudski. So if sanacja was Pilsudski's ideology, how it is possible that after his death with no change of government it became endecja (which was the ideology of his rival)? I'm very confused.

Another question. Was the Polish Worker's Party the same as Wanda Wasilewskaya's movement?

I have other questions, I hope someone can help me.

  • Hi, I'll try to help you, although it might be not easy, I suppose...
Well, "sanacja" is rather some term, name which we use to call the period of time in Poland (1926-1939), when Piłsudski and his people were on charge. And "endecja" means: political movement, point of view with - yes, you are right - more right-winged orientation with Roman Dmowski as a leader. After Piłsudski's death, right-wing politicians became stronger, there were conflicts in the core of Piłsudski's protagonists, but it is not true, that "sanacja" became "endecja". "Sanacja"'s politicians were still enemies of "endecja", which had such a radical organizations as : Obóz Wolnej Polski (Great Poland Union) or Obóz Narodowo-Radykalny (Nationalistic-Radical Union). So, "endecja" didn't replace "sanacja" after Piłsudski's death - "sanacja" just became more radical and right-winged.
I don't know what you mean directly on Polish Workers' Party...Maybe you meant Polska Partia Socjalistyczna?(Polish Socialistic Party) Wasilewska was a communist and his movement, which was set up in USSR, was called Polish Patriots Union (Związek Patriotów Polskich).
I know it is is not easy to understand those all complications, but I did my best :)
If you have other questions: no problem, I will try to answer them.

  • Thank you Konrad! You were very helpful. :obey: :obey:

Now I understand. Sanacja is all the period till 1939, but after the death of Pilsudski, the people of sanacja became more right-wing, so similiar ideas with national-democracy but still opposing them.

About Wasilewska and his Patriots Union, was it the same as Polska Partia Robotnicza?

The Polska Partia Socjalistyczna you are talking was different from the one founded by Pilsudski, right? It was a communist proxy?

I hope the professor will ask me about Gomulka and Gierek. That is the part I know better. The part I'm most confused is durig WWII with so many organizations and changes of names it makes my head explode to remember all. It is difficult also the Bierut period.

I have still tommorrow to understand all better.

Thanks for your help, very appreciated! :)

  • Polska Partia Socjalistyczn (PPS) eng. Polish Socialist Party - Piłsudski was one of the leaders PPS.

Polska Partia Robotnicza (PPR) eng. Polish Workers' Party - leaders for example Gomułka, Bierut.

In 1948 PPR and PPS created PZPR (Polska Zjednoczona Partia Robotnicza) eng. Polish United Workers' Party.
    It's in a big short (:

    Wanda Wasilewska was in PPS.

As Justyna explained it above: Polish Patriots Union and Polish Workers Party was two different things.
I was talking about THIS Polska Partia Socjalistyczna in which Piłsudski was involved. It wasn't communist proxy. I just didn't understand correctly an English name for Polska Partia Robotnicza (Polish Workers Party), so it was a little misunderstanding. :)
Do you study history? Because the knowledge you need to have on your exam is very detailed.

  • Thanks Justyna and Konrad. I'm very grateful. I hope tommorrow all will be OK.

No, I don't study history but political sciences. For the exam of history of central and eastern Europe, you have the opportunity to choose two books amongst more books. I choosed Poland and the Balkans and avoided the other countries. So it is because of this that the knowledge has to be detailed. Anyway it's "only" the 20th century.

  • It's nice to me to read that someone learns Polish history :) But you are right :!: Polish history 1918-1945 is really complicated. After II WW communists proscribed opposition groups and all it's easy to understand... :whistling:

Well, if there is a topic about Poland, I also want to ask my question :) I don't know why but I began to interest in Central-Eastern Euoropean countries. I want to continue my education. I also apply for embassies in Azerbaijan, but they haven't answered me yet.:(So, I want information about Poland universities, especially scholarship for foreigners. How can I aplly, what I need etc....:)

  • I did the exam today and I received 30 (the maximum). :cup:

The professor and his assistant asked me questions for 1 hour (!!!). It was an oral exam. That was exhausting. But I'm happy. They asked just about Poland, no questions about Balkans. I'm glad, because I was more prepared on Poland. The only fear I had was that they could ask me about the Jaruzelski period (which I didn't have time to study). I was lucky.

    They asked me about:
    -Katyn massacre
-Warsaw uprising and Armia Krajowa destruction
-Polish government in London (Sikorski and then Mikolajczyk)
    -Polish resistance
    -Pilsudski and minorities relations
-Lanckorona Pact between Witos and the right-wing parties
    -Agrarian reform
-List of minorities living in Poland in the 1918-1939 period
-The Poznan uprising, Polish October, Ochab and then Gomulka

    Thanks Poland!!

  • It's nice to me to read that someone learns Polish history :)

    :)

It's an interesting history and I've learned how much Polish people have suffered in the last century.

  • Congratulations, samba player! :drink:
And I have to add, that many Poles would have problems with such an exam. So, once again: big applause for you :)

    Hehe

    Thanks!!

It was really hard. I've never thought he would ask me about Lanckorona Pact. That is so specific.
    But I'm really satisfied.

    :)
