Evgeniya Artamonova Estes Retires

  • Evgeniya Artamonova Estes, one of the all-time greatest women's volleyball players and the only 6 time indoor Volleyball Olympian, has retired from the sport of volleyball. She recently requested, and was granted, a release from her contract with her longtime club team Uralochka and plans to join her family (husband Jeri and son Jette) in the USA. She finished her amazing, enigmatic and diverse International career in consummate fashion, playing inspired volleyball at the world qualification tournament in Japan, propelling Russia to secure an Olympic berth in London (and her record 6th Olympic appearance), followed by a heartbreaking quarterfinal loss to eventual Olympic champion Brazil.

Truly a beautiful and gentle soul in her natural state, best wishes to her and many thanks for many wonderful volleyball memories.

  • She's simply the best ! :rose: ;)

  • Retires during season.. that isn't comfort for Uralochka's Team, curious how will look 1st 7 on court now. In that case bye bye Uralochka from 2014 European Cups because very probably that will be on 6-7th place.

  • and why now? somebody knows? :what: :what:

I wonder if Ksenia Ilchenko would get a chance to play as starter ?( Alhough she is only 18 years old she seemed really promising player as her mother :rose:

  • Ilchenko since that season plays as OH with good reception in Uralochka Youth so in future who knows.

I would guess that it's because of Uralochka's elimination from CL. Zhenya has planned to retire since long time, I think playing in CL once again was the main reason why she continued for another season and now that Uralochka is out she can retire. Probably Karpol knew this before, it explains why Yumilka Ruiz came to Uralochka, she can replace Zhenya in first six now. That's all just a guess though...

  • 6 time olympian! Great! Evgeniya!

Радо Стойчев каза: Мизия, Тракия, Македония! Западните покрайнини - завинаги български!

  • Karpol said yesterday, that Estes went to USA for some vacation and to spend more time with her son and that he hopes she'll be back for the play-offs in march. At least they're waiting for her.

But in the interview on Uralochka's website, Estes clearly says that she's done with volleyball and as a player she gave volleyball everything she could. We'll see how it goes.

  • Estes' husband Jeri has been the assistant coach at East Carolina University for the last 2 years. In that time the team is 4-52! In December the head coach was released and ECU is searching for a new head coach now. Jeri remains at the university until a new head coach can be hired. It is possible he could be promoted based on his CV, but I think it is unlikely because of the team's record while he was an assistant coach. There are probably quite a few changes about to happen for that family in the next few months! Best wishes to them!
