  • Women's volleyball team win big at sports personality awards

China's national women's volleyball team cemented its highflying status on Sunday by collecting four titles at the annual CCTV Sports Personality of the Year Awards.

Boasting a gold-medal finish at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, the women's volleyball team edged out strong competition from the likes of China's all-conquering diving team and table tennis squad to win Team of the Year for 2016 at the ceremony, held at the National Aquatics Center in Beijing.

Dubbed the "Sports Oscars" in China, the awards, which were launched in 2001 by China Central Television, have developed into an annual festival for the country's sporting elite.

A 400-member jury including journalists, scholars, sports officials and executives select five nominees for each of the 10 disciplines in December before a final round of voting takes place ahead of the awards ceremony.

For her role in leading the volleyball team to regain Olympic gold for the first time in 12 years, head coach Lang Ping won the Coach of the Year award, while the team's main attacking player Zhu Ting was awarded the Sportswoman of the Year award for her performance during the team's Rio campaign.

The team also won the Jury Prize, an additional category that honors the greatest contributions to Chinese sports throughout the year.

Lang, who has coached the team since 2013 following an earlier stint from 1995-98, said the journey to the podium in Rio was one of the toughest she had ever experienced.

"I can barely recall the Rio campaign as all the games we played were so hard. I have experienced a lot of ups and downs in my coaching career, but Rio was the most challenging," she said.

"I hope there will be more young talent emerge to keep fighting for the glory of Chinese volleyball."

Lang, who left for the United States straight after the ceremony to undergo surgery on her hip, won her first Olympic gold as China's main spiker (attacking hitter) at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.

Citing medical reasons, she said she hadn't yet decided whether to extend her coaching role with the team.

China's women's volleyball squad has been held up as model of tenacity and fighting spirit ever since the 1980s, when Lang and her teammates became the first Chinese sports team to be successful on a global scale.

Hui Ruoqi, captain of the current squad, attributed the team's success to the inner strength of each player.

"In an era where changes constantly happen in our every day lives and many things fade away with time, we are proud to be able to rekindle the fighting spirit and faith in hard work embodied by the team," she said.

    Just a loose translation...

Head coach Lang Ping hinted that she will not handle the national team this year

Xinhua News via Sina Sports (2017-02-23)

[CHICAGO, Xinhua / Wang Qiang, February 22] - more than a month ago Lang Ping had her right hip joint (pelvis) replacement surgery at the Medical School of the University of Chicago. Lang told reporter that this year, her main focus is to treat her injury, which has been in problem for many years, and it needs great strength and is quite tough to be the coaching team of the China's national women's volleyball.

Lang Ping had her right hip joint replacement surgery and installation of the artificial joint on January 19 local time, now she's on recovery, she can walk on her own by the assist of one hand on the walking stick (crutch). If the doctor can make certain that she's okay to board a plane after an examination later on, she wants to fly back to her daughter's place in California to continue the recovery there.

The director of volleyball, Li Quan-qiang, pays a visit to Lang Ping in Chicago

According to Lang Ping, based on the hospital's examination results of her both hip joints, the injuries are very serious. After the right side is on good recovery, then over a period of time her left hip joint replacement surgery will be done. The post-surgery rehabilitation of one side will need at least two or three month time. So "to participate in (China's national women's volleyball) coaching work this year should be more difficult. Everything will be up to her physical condition."

"But no matter what, no matter who will coach the national team this year, it needs to be set up. I will try my best to help the association to set up the team," Lang said.

Currently staying in the northwest Chicago, Lang looks relatively thin, she said the ten days after surgery were more difficult, she needed to take painkillers and many other anesthetic medicines every day. Now she's recovered fairly well, especially in the diet, there is a group specialized in local free of charge for her to cook some Chinese food, ensuring the food is delicious, nutritious.

Talking about the State Sports General Administration of Sports Management Center - director of volleyball, Li Quan-qiang, came to Chicago to visit her few days ago, Lang said, although she already stepped down in accordance with the contract, but the State Sports administration leaders are quite concerned about her condition, so she feels quite fortunate.

In view of the expectation from all over the country especially the vast number of fans who are eager to see her continuously serving as the China's national women's volleyball head coach Lang said: "I'd been working in the China's national team for many years after all, to take or not to take the assignment, it's also in accordance to the doctor's resolve. Because in order to assume the coaching position of the Chinese team, you need enormous energy and physical strength. It is not about I wish it or not, if the physical strength is not up to the standard, insisting on being the coach under such condition, is indeed irresponsible."

Lang said she would like to at least in such circumstances that she can help putting forward more suggestions to the formation of the new team and various aspects related to the team.

Still looking for your comeback as the head coach one year later or earlier, Ms. Lang :cup: this is just a sabbatical leave... a medical one plus some refreshment & precious family reunion :drink: for your good health and speedy full recovery!

  • Somehow I have a feeling that China is not very confident in coaches other than Jenny Lang Ping, and this is problematic. Maybe no other coach has been given credit for their coaching records, or maybe there is simply no more right candidate for this position... whichever, having Lang Ping as the only good option is very dangerous.

Not long ago, another Rio champion coach Rezende left Brazil Men's national team, but it seems there are many strong and competent coaches capable of coming to fill this position. This confidence and the ways in which these volleyball coaches and experts hold together somehow are not shared by China Women's. :|

It is not a matter of confidence or lack of it, because the more essential question is WHY changes a WINNER if she can still perform? One-year medical leave should not rush the association to change "the horse". Lang Ping is still quite in service if she can recover well or even rather well. I just see no reason for a drastic decision to "permanently" put someone in her post at this time, it will be a premature one, a temporary substitute YES. Therefore I guess most likely her chief aides, either Lai Ya-wen or An Jia-jie who will be the caretaker. Time will tell.

NT B / NT "Mixed-Plus" / some Junior team? I hope that China will at least dispatch a team as comparatively good as the last year's Montreux :dance6:
