Looks like rookie setter LEE Won-Jeong and both liberos KIM Hae-Ran and KIM Yeong-Yeon were cut from the team as evident in the team photo (only with 18 players).

It looks like former Heungkuk coach Cha Hae-Won will lead Korea NT this year. I wonder what prompted this change. 1
By the way, something went wrong with NT photoshoot for VNL this year Lighting is just so unflattering.

Forgot to mention who the coach was when I posted the team roster. Apparently, Cha Hae-Won has actually already been the coach for the Women NT team once before in 2013.

The Korean Volleyball Association (KVA) and Korean Volleyball Federation (KOVO) decided to establish a long-term plan for the men and women NT for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. I first read about their plan after the World Championship Asian Qualifier in late September 2017. Previously, I think the coach for NT was appointed on an annual basis. The KVA and KOVO announced that they would co-operate to strengthen the NT competitiveness. Hence, the appointment of full-time coaching staffs for the NT until the Asian Game in 4 years time with midway evaluation after the Olympics. Subsequently, in early February Cha Hae-Won was appointed as coach of the Korean Women NT.

I previously posted these in the VNL thread but ICYMI:

Kim Yeon-Koung will not be travelling with the South Korea NT when they go to Apeldoorn (Netherlands) in week 3 and Santa Fe (Argentina) in week 5. Kim will be rested and will only play in Ningbo (China), Suwon (South Korea), and Nakhon Ratchasima (Thailand).

I think there is a possibility that other senior players in the Korean NT will also be rested when they travel to Netherlands and Argentina.

Look like the other senior players that will rest in the 3rd & 5th week along with KYK will be MB Yang Hyo-Jin and Kim Su-Ji.

Korean roster for the 1st week:

    • S: LEE Hyo-Hee, LEE Na-Yeon, LEE Da-Yeong
    • OPP: KIM Hee-Jin, NA Hyun-Soo
    • OH: KIM Yeon-Koung, PARK Jeong-Ah, LEE Jae-Yeong, KANG So-Hwi
    • MB: KIM Su-Ji, YANG Hyo-Jin, PARK Eun-Jin
    • Li: YIM Myung-Ok, NA Hyun-Jung

MB JEONG Sun-Ah will also travel with the team to China.

The core of the team from 2017 FIVB Girls' U18 World Championship remains. The most notable players on the team are No. 2 LEE Ju-Ah (MB), No. 18 PARK Hye-Min (OH) and No. 11 JUNG Ho-Young (OP). LEE Ju-Ah and PARK Hye-Min were awarded Best Middle Blocker and Best Outside Hitter respectively at 2017 Asian Girls' U18 Volleyball Championship in Chongqing, China. Also, both players along with PARK Eun-Jin and NA Hyun-Soo (who both recently debuted with the Senior Women NT) will be highly sought after by the V-League teams at this year Draft. JUNG Ho-Young who is currently 16 y.o. and 189 cm tall has been labelled by the Korean media as the next KYK. IMO she still has a lot of things to learn before she comes anywhere near KYK but on the plus side still have time to learn and develop. Also, this will be JUNG Ho-Young second time at the Asian U19 Championship as she was apart of the 2016 team at the age of 14 only.

  • Korean roster for the 3rd week in Apeldoorn (Netherlands):

    • S: 5. LEE Hyo-Hee, 6. LEE Na-Yeon, 19. LEE Da-Yeong
    • OP: 1. NA Hyun-Soo, 4. KIM Hee-Jin
    • OH: 2. KIM Ju-Hyang, 13. PARK Jeong-Ah, 15. KANG So-Hwi, 17. LEE Jae-Yeong, 18. YOO Seo-Yeun
    • MB: 9. JEONG Sun-Ah, 25. PARK Eun-Jin
    • Li: 8. YIM Myung-Ok, 20. NA Hyun-Jung

MB 12. KIM Chae-Yeon travelled with the team but missed out due to an abdominal muscle injury.

As previously mentioned OH 10. KIM Yeon-Koung, MB 11. KIM Su-Ji, and MB 14. YANG Hyo-Jin has been rested for this week. Cha Hae-Won will give the younger players a chance to play this week.

My guess on the most likely starting line-up:

    • Attacking from the sides will be 13. PARK Jeong-Ah and 15. KANG SO-Hwi, and 17. LEE Jae-Yeong
(Jeong-Ah and So-Hwi, one will be OH whilst the other will be OP).

    • In the middle, 4. KIM Hee-Jin and 25. PARK Eun-Jin
(A lot of expectation on Eun-Jin as the future MB for the Korean NT and she hasn't even gone pro yet).

    • Setter will be 19. LEE Da-Yeong
(Still need to gain more experience and improve, most likely led the NT at Tokyo in 2020 as Lee Hyo-Hee will be 40 y.o. by then).

    • And libero 8. YIM Myung-Ok
(I personally prefer 20. NA Hyun-Jung in the libero position, she just seems quicker).

    * 1st time in senior NT

    - 3 high school students PARK Eun-Jin, LEE Ju-Ah, JUNG Ho-Young have been named in the team with the aim of letting them gain some experience. Eun-Jin has already played with the senior team during the VNL, whilst Ju-Ah and Ho-Young recent played at the Asian U19 Championship. Like Eun-Jin, the Korean see Ju-Ah as another future prospect for the MB position, both will most likely to be among the top 3 draft picks later this year. Regarding Ho-Young, I haven't seen enough from her at the recent Asian U19 Championship to warrant the hype coming from the Korean media previously about her. However, the Korean head coach CHA Hae-Won sees her as an important element in helping KYK combat against the height advantage of the other nations.

    - IBK Altos OP KIM Hee-Jin is ruled out due to injury to her elbow and shoulder after the VNL.

    - Hyundai E&C OH Hwang Min-Kyoung replaced Hee-Jin in the team which allows the team to play PARK Jeong-Ah as a non-receiving OH/OP.

A quick summary, 4 new players coming into the team to replaces 4 of the players from the Asian Games roster and two of them play as a liberos normally. IMO the Korean head coach Cha Hae-Won decision is weird, three liberos he is bring to World Championship :/. One of the libero will definitely play as defensive OH, but still 3 liberos. KGC libero Oh Ji-Young will be the defensive OH. Also IBK Altos OP Kim Hee-Jin did not return to the NT.

KGC Ginseng Setter LEE Jae-Eun (이재은) and Middle Blocker HAN Soo-Ji (한수지), IBK Outside Hitter GO Ye-Rim (고예림), and Hyundai E&C Libero KIM Yeon-Gyeon (김연견) also missed out.

If it was me, I would have kept Kang So-Hwi along with her club teammate Lee So-Young as attacking alternative instead of bring in veteran libero Kim Hae-Ran. I would have replace Lee Hyo-Hee with Lee Na-Yeon instead and kept Lee Da-yeong too even if her setting is unstable just for her blocking ability.

    I agree with you...

And the result I'm pretty sure very disappointed for the Koreans.. They couldn't past the 1st round, which meant they couldn't get to the last 16......

Only won 1 of 5 matches.. They lost to Azerbaijan and Thailand (lower ranks in paper).. I'm almost sure their world rank will get lower the end of this year...

It's homework for the coach and staff...

They have abundant backup for KYK. in outside hitter.. and I think they are also have good liberos, though it seems they keep calling Kim Heeran...

IMO beside the stable setter, they are also lack of opposite hitter.. only Kim Heejin is good.. due to her age, I don't think Hwang Yeon Joo is going to be called again...

Another thing is the backup for Yang Hyojin in MB position... Kim Suji is good, but her speed is slowly decrease, let alone in 4 yrs ...I'm not sure about Bae Yoona either.. she's the same age as Yang Hyojin.. is there no good MB in SK that younger then YHJ?

FYI: I'm new in this forum.. and I'm also new in this volleyball world.. I'm a new fan of Korean Women's volleyball team and league (1 month old). so my opinion just basing of their match vids I've watched on YT.....so I'm still lack on info and I don't understand Korean...:)

    Thank you for welcoming...:)

It started with KYK... I just found out about her about 2 months ago while watching a K-variety show.. Many considered she's one of the best player in the world.. I was late I thought, so I look for every matches she played on YT (also her appearances on variety shows and interviews)... That's got me introduced to her clubs and NT...

I've watched S.Korea matches from 2012 - 2018 that I can find on YT.. that's why I found out about the names of other players and their positions...

Few players stood out for me: Yang Hyo Jin, Kim Suji, Kim Heejin for having a lot of play time along side KYK. and really good players. Lee Jaeyong for appeared first in SK NT when she was 17, and continue staying in NT ... and Hwang Yoon Joo, she was like first backup player and she's left handed spiker..

Then I got to know about their V-league.. I watch many matches, but since all in Korean language, I can't understand a thing.. just enjoying the matches...:)

A few days ago I found a thread about V-league in this forum... The details that put on every match report made me understand some things that I didn't when watching the match vids...

I kind of understand why the NT coaches seems only trust Lee HyoHee as main setter in most of their matches.. and they keep changing the backup setters in every tournament they played.... I hope they can polish Lee Dayeong to be the next main setter..

Next year is the qualification tournament for 2020 olympic... I hope they can get through and get the medal that they dream of before KYK retire from NT..

  • FYI: I'm new in this forum.. and I'm also new in this volleyball world.. I'm a new fan of Korean Women's volleyball team and league (1 month old). so my opinion just basing of their match vids I've watched on YT.....so I'm still lack on info and I don't understand Korean...:)

Welcome to the forum and Korean volleyball :wavy:

FYI, I don't understand Korean either (I only know how to romanised it). Feel free to ask if there are thing you don't know. Don't worry, most people opinions are based only on those videos too, including myself.

I posted a few links of variety show that KYK was on in her thread. The links will be death or outdated but you can final the name of the show and the episode number from there.

Yeap, all the Korean MBs are all roughly the same age hence they tried to give four young MBs chances in the senior team this year. Hwang Youn-Joo won't be back for the NT. Kim Hee-Jin was poor during the VNL but this was most like because of the injuries she was playing with. Sadly a lot of Korean OP in the Korean league don't get to play regular because the teams prefer to hire foreign player in the OP position.

In other news relating to the NT, Korean head coach CHA Hae-Won recently handed in his resignation citing poor result as the reason. KVA and KOVO to decided in December if they will accept it. It was belated reported that one of the trainer/coach was dismissed for misconduct toward a female support staff member just prior to the World Championship.

  • hi theloneracer ...

Like I mention in my last post, through your thread of V-league I got to know more about SK volleyball... so thank you...:)

I kind of agree with coach Cha.. about the poor result, I mean.. They lost to many lower rank countries this year...

    - VNL: They lost to Argentina, Belgium, Poland, Turkey with straight sets.. Though they won against China and Russia, they ended up 5 w-10 l (rank 12 of 16)

    - AVC: They lost to Vietnam in preliminary, then lost to Taiwan in quarterfinal..

    - Asian Games: they lost to Thailand in semifinal.. They got bronze, but they targeted Gold...

    - WCH: lost to Azerbaijan and Thailand.. end up 1 win-4 lost, can't through to round 2... rank 17 of 24 participants... They targeted pass 2nd round...

so yeah... I'm guessing they will get a new coach...:)

The previous NT coach, I believe he's the current IBK coach, is better I think... or maybe they will try the younger one, like the best coach of V-league this year

  • Hi everyone! I'm new in this volleyball community website. I'm Korean and I love the Korean women's volleyball team players. Recently, a lot of very unpleasant things have happened about KVA, head coach Cha and Korean women's volleyball national team. So Korean fans are very sad, but we hope everything will get better soon.

Hello anoniminona12! Welcome to the forum. :wavy::drink:

    Wow an actual Korean.

I post the info here for the women NT and the women v-league. I'm not Korean so I don't understand Korean, I can only read the players' name in Hangul.

I hope you can explains some of the news about Korean volleyball and/or give us your insights/opinions on the NT. :sos::rose:

From naver and google translate, I know head coach Cha Hae-Won has handed in his resignation and a day (or a few days) after news of the sexual harassment by one of the coach against a female staff member at the Korean athlete village. I'm curious as to what the articles that came out afterward were saying. Are they blaming head coach Cha or KVA handling of the situation?

Could you also explain to us about Hi-pass Lee Won-Jeong (이원정) situation? From the articles on naver, I know the following:

    1. Won-Jeong was injured and could not play for 8 weeks. She missed the KOVO Cup and hence she was also ruled out of the NT for the AVC Cup.

    2. KVA rules state she was to be re-examine by KVA appointed medical staffs but that did not happen.

    3. KVA notified Hi-pass by letter where KVA said she cannot play in any domestic competitions until sometime in February 2019.

    4. Hi-pass went to KOVO to confirm this but KOVO said she can play because KOVO rules are different to KVA.

  • First of all, most Korean volleyball fans and media think the head coach Cha must be resigned because he made poor results.

But it's hard to blame him about the sexual harassment problem. After Cha was hired as the head coach, he asked KVA to hire a female coach but KVA refused. Instead, KVA forced him to hire a male coach. He's the coach who's now accused of trying to do a sexual harassment against a female trainer.

The important problem is KVA told media it would give Cha the entire right to hire coaching staff members and players. However, KVA forced Cha to select some players(high school students) and some coaching staff who KVA likes. So KVA is being blamed about the sexual harassment problem because it recommended(actually, forced to hire) that coach strongly. This problem occurred before the Asian Games and the coach was resigned. The bigger problem was KVA tried to cover the problem without investigating it.

After 2018 World Championship finished, media mentioned this issue with criticizing both KVA and Cha. Korean Sports & Olympic Committee said it would investigate the problem, and then KVA organised a fact-finding committee. It's too late.

It's been over a month since the fact-finding committee was organised but KVA has never announced anything about the progress. The president of KVA is abroad for his own business and all KVA has done is submit an apology.

So public and volleyball fans think KVA is the most evil sports organisation in Korean sports world.

  • The problem with Lee is also the fault of KVA. According to KVA rules, players who are injured cannot participate in V league as long as their full recovery periods. But a player who are injured while training in 'the national team' can't participate in the league twice as long as the original rules.

EX : If a player is injured while training in the national team and is judged he/she need to recover for 3 weeks, he/she can't play in the pro league for 6 weeks.

Many fans, players, coaches and KOVO say that this rule is very unreasonable. KVA had to discuss about this rule with KOVO when it establishes the rule, but KVA ignored KOVO and made this rule its own way. Recently, KVA responded it's going to discuss with KOVO right after negative comments about this issue appear.

Lee can't join V-league until November 2 according to the rule of KVA. However KOVO allowed her to play, so the head coach of Hi-pass let her play in yesterday's game.

KOVO, pro teams and players are very unhappy about KVA's operation of the national team. Especially KOVO gives KVA $530,000 every year but no improvement has been made in the management of Korean national team. Players' poor conditions after many international competitions leads to poor quality of V league and that's why KOVO hates KVA a lot. This is a fight between KOVO and KVA and Lee & high-pass are victims.

Actually this rule is necessary since KVA need to prevent a player from being overworked and teams from refusing national team's duties because of an excuse of a player's injury. However, it is absurd to ban a player from playing twice as long as she was injured during training.

As I mentioned, KVA is the most evil and stupidest sports organisation in Korea.

  • @anoniminona12 yes, thank you very much for the explanation...

It's really troublesome.. and it's more or less affected the NT performance.... They have to fix it fast, if they really target a medal in Olympic 2020...

Another matter puzzling me: why are no other Korean NT players play on leagues outside S.Korea beside KYK? Is it because no clubs offer any of them? Or there are offers, but they won't allow to play abroad by the higher ups? Or the players themselves doesn't want to play abroad?

There are a few of them that I think should play in "more" competitive leagues to improve themselves..

But there are 2 that I definitely think they should really play abroad:

    1. It is a little late but still can: MB Yang Hyo Jin.. I could say she has no real rival in her position in Korea, be in scoring, block kill, and average blocking... Doesn't matter her club didn't perform well, she awarded the best MB almost every season... There should be a club or two outside Korea that interested of her.. But she's approaching 30 now and a captain and also the highest paid in the country, so I'm pessimistic she would want to play abroad...

    2. OH Lee Jae Young.. She's been awarded best OH the last 3 yrs in the league .. She just debuted 4 yrs ago .. Even when the club was in the bottom rank, she still got the award! I'm really worried she can't improve much if she's staying in Korea, because she's the ace of her club and no competitor...She's still young and has potential as all around player .. In the NT she perform well enough in covering for KYK. in many matches...

Though it's purely my personal subjective suggestion... because playing in other leagues doesn't guarantee to became better.. or staying will became worse... It's just about experience...

but it's all really depend on good relationship and cooperation between the pro league (KOVO) and the KVA....
