• Which are the sponsors of national teams and clubs? What are they doing? Do you buy their products just because they support volleyball?

    Some are big ones:

Zarechie Odinstovo is sponsored by Toyota (Japanese car making company) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota, Dinamo Moscow by Gazprom (largest Russian company, it is also the largest extractor of natural gas in the world) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gazprom
It is funny that rival food companies Unilever and Nestlé sponsor the two rival Brazilian teams Unilever Rio de Janeiro and Sollys Osasco. Unilever is a British-Dutch company and owns many product brands in foods, beverages, cleaning agents and personal care products, for exemple Lipton tea. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unilever Nestlé is Suisse and is the largest consumer packaged goods company in the world. For exemple the coffee Nescafè is famous. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nestl%C3%A9

  • In France there is no real sponsor giving their name to teams. They only have jersey sponsors (and "economical partners").
Clubs get their money mainly from public administrations (city, departement and regions). For some teams it's more than 90% of the money. The only exception are Tours Volleyball that gets more than 50% of the budget from TVBE (Tours Volley Ball Entreprise) a club for more than 100 economical partners, and about 40% from administrations. I don't have figures about RC Cannes but they must get as much money from enterprises and from public administrations.

One funny thing, both RC Cannes and Tours VB have the same main jersey sponsor: E.Leclerc.
Though E.Leclerc is the first hypermarket chain in France, the group is some kind of franchise, and all stores belong to local owners. So There is no link between the stores sponsoring RC Cannes and the stores sponsoring Tours VB. Both president of the clubs (Anny Courtade in Cannes and Jacques Bouhier in Tours) are owners of E. Leclerc stores.

  • Cool idea for thread. Here are some examples from Poland women's teams.

National team is sponsored by Plus telecommunications company. They put their logo on jerseys:

Plus also sponsors top league and so it is called Plus league. Which works nice because Plus means plus (but of course sounds more like "ploos" :) )
Clubs typically have main sponsor that is part of their name. For example BKS Aluprof Bielsko-Biała: BKS is abbreviation meaning Bielsko Sports Club, Aluprof is metal distribution company, Bielsko-Biała is name of city. There are smaller sponsors that also get logos on uniforms:

Sponsor is very important. Club in Piła was sponsored by company whose name I will not list... because they dropped sponsorship and club no longer affords to play in Plus league.
On the other hand, club in Muszyna has so many sponsors their name keeps getting longer. Bank BPS Muszynianka Fakro Muszyna has bank, water bottler and window manufacturer. They have several smaller sponsors. One no longer have was quite well known to some fans... rain gutter maker Galeco:

Then there is "new" club Atom Trefl Sopot. Trefl makes games and puzzles, and Trefl Sopot club was in lower league. But now they have lots of money from PGE energy group. PGE wants to build nuclear reactor which explains "Atom" name and logo:

  • In Turkey;

  • Did you know that JT Marvelous is sponsored by Japan Tobacco? Now it owns the famous american brand Camel. On youtube there is even a commercial about the team sponsoring cigarettes. It is really strange cause tobacco commercial are banned in many countries of the world.

Coca cola sponsored China NT in 2006. Is it funny? Are they still sponsoring it?

  • Dutch national womens team in sponsered by Dela, which is an udnertaker, which means they organise burials (the burrying of dead people). So I hope none of the Dutch girls will be buying their products soon, except perhaps for their relatives. I guess its a sponsor not everyone wants, but we're happy with it "yay, dead people!". I also suspect that this deal had something to do with the fact that they were expecting Flier to kill a bunch of people with spikes :P Sorry if you're offened by jokes about death.

  • How do hospital groups have so much money? And how come they sponsor stuff, are they competeing fiercely against each other? That's strange, we don't have anything like that in Holland.

  • Dutch national womens team in sponsered by Dela, which is an udnertaker, which means they organise burials (the burrying of dead people).

Would fit the male NT better ... :whistling:

  • In the national league of Belgium, almost every team has an name sponsor:

Knack Randstad Roeselare: Knack is a magazine, Randstad a temporary work agency

Volleybalclub Euphony Asse-Lennik: Euphony is a telecommunication company
Volley Toyota Wouters Averbode: Toyota Wouters is a local automobile repair shop.
Aquacare Halen: Aquacare is a company who controls the water in some regions in Belgium. They lower the amount of Ca2+ in the water and make it drinkable for everyone.
Prefaxis Menen: Prefaxis produces different types of hollow wall elements in exposed concrete.
Argex Duvel Puurs: Argex produces expanded clay grains, Duvel is a brewery (Duvel is also a worldfamous beer)
Topvolley Precura Antwerpen: Precura is an independent, social insuring company.
VC Schelde-natie Kapellen: Main activities of Schelde-natie are inspection and stevedoring in grains and fats (and derivatives).

Only VBC Waremme has no name sponsor.

  • MKS Tauron Dabrowa Gornicza -Tauron is energy group for southern Poland,
Organika Budowlani Lodz -Organika is the manufacturer of brake fluids and components making your car cleaner, faster, better:)
    Male teams:
PGE Skra Belchatow -PGE is the energy group,
ZAKSA Kedzierzyn Kozle - ZAKSA is chemical company,
    Jastrzebski Wegiel - coal supplier,
Asseco the sponsor of Resovia Rzeszow is software supplier.

Basically I buy only Muszynianka water, all the rest are rather suppliers not connected with my needs:)
And in addition to Polish National Team. The main sponsor is Plus of course, but there is also POLSAT tv, which has really huge influence (means money and power) for Polish volleyball
