Unpopular opinions

  • the 90's to 2004 are just some of the best matches i've watched in volleyball. so fun to watch. :D

    Totally agree. The 90s could have been even more interesting if Kirillova and some others had stayed with Russian NT instead of going to Croatia. Russia with Kirillova, Batukhtina, Smirnova, Sidorenko/Artamonova, Ogienko, Chebukina could have been a very serious contender for Cuba's dream team in the 90s...

  • I think two rule changes from the late 90s are the main reason why Volleyball in some ways has become "worse":

    1. Introduction of the libero led to an even more narrow specialisation of players. Nowadays MBs only have to block and attack quick balls, they don't need good skills in reception and defense and imagining some modern MBs hitting high or even backrow balls is just ridiculous. Thaisa does that occasionally, but for example imagine Borodakova hitting from backrow :aww:

    2. Until the late 90s, the ball was not allowed to touch the net after a serve. Because of this, there was far less risk in serve than today, players usually did long float serves that went high over the net. As a result, teams were receiving much better back then than today's teams and setters had more options in their game. Earlier, the purpose of the serve was only to start the rally, nowadays serve is considered as the first attack. The jump serve as far as I know came in fashion during the 90s, Ana Moser being one of the first to use it, and the jump float came in the early 00s after the rule change...

  • 90's the period when the eldest members got left behind by their boyfirends/girlfriends which is why they miss this era so much ;)

    i'm a proud 90's kid. (i'm 25 now by the way ;)) those are the days when TV isn't every thing and kids actually play with other kids. :drink:

    anyway, going back to this thread's purpose....

    In men's volleyball,

    Poland was booted early in the 2012 olympics because instead of focusing on the task at hand (which is to medal at the olympics), they celebrated their World Cup silver medal too much and let the glory seep into their heads. they forgot that many players from different teams have missing players due to injury. hence, an easier road for them. :wall:

    In women's volleyball,

    i'm torn between being happy with kirch kiraly's coaching techniques or throwing my most smelly shoe on his head. while it's true that at the end of the day, the players themselves should have the decisive factors on court, if the team suddenly experience brain freeze, the coach should be the one to wake them up! 2013 volleyball grand prix final round, Italy vs USA match point, how can USA lose that one last point??? both the players and the coach suddenly fell asleep!!! :thumbdown:

  • Change change change I know that era from the tumbang preso, luksong tinik, patintero etc. and I love how carvajal can do almost everything on the court even though she's a middle and I also love obayashi's lefty slides from zone 4 but nostalgia is not for me it's forward and beyond.

  • Let's bring the subject here...
    Ana is one of the best setters in the world IMO.. Although she has been playing in a weaker league, playing with Cannes against some of the worlds best teams is enough to see what she can do. Not playing for Serbia as a starter for the last years is because she has been injured many times durung NT season and also because Terzic does not want to give up Ognjenovic. Maja is a very very good setter IMO, she has been one of the best IN THE PAST... she hasn't been playing as we know her for the last maybe 2-3 years, in NT she overuses Jovana and we have seen that many times.. Also I don't really appreciate her lack of ambition, she has always been playing in teams that don't play in CL because she wants to play only one match per week :down: In an interview she said she would loove to play at Serbia only if they had the money to offer her.. and we know on what level Serbian league is.. Also her previous clubs were not that demanding to play only one match per week.. Back on Ana, her OHs this year were Grothues, Yaneva and Partenio and none of them is a great attacker, especially Maret and if you only watch one match in CL you will see how much Maret was scoring.. I agree that playing in a weaker team does not mean you will play like taht i a great team but Cannes is NOT a weak team, they are playing in a weaker league, but they also performed very well in CL so not much proof needed. I also consider Naz as one of the best setters yes.. it's unfortunate that these last years she hasn't been around great MB except Furst in both NT and clubs, and Furst was not on her real level in the last matches, but we all know Naz loves playing with MBs and i do think she makes some great plays.
    Ferreti does not come to my mind when talking about best setters in the world, I mean yes she can organize some really good actions, but being good is not only till 15 in the set, or when you have a huge lead.. Wei is one of the best setters out there.. she has been unlucky because her first season abroad has been in Igtisadchi, but there she proved she is not only a good Asian setter..

  • For Ana playing in a weaker league doesn't mean that she is not great. Ok french league is not a strong one but she is really working hard on training every day. And this work you can see it on champions league. She was 2 Times in final 4 and this year against Vakif and galatasaray she run her team perfectly. She can set all type of ball and is creative.
    She manage to almost win against Vakif having as OH Yaneva and Partenio. She is really great and I hope that she can achieve something in volero.

  • -I really love Gamova's attitude.. :win:
    -In my eyes Mihajlovic is beautiful.. :love:
    -I don't like Brazil's Women NT.. :down:

  • I think exactly the opposite :rolll:

    - I can't stand watching Gamova playing
    - I wouldn't say she is beautiful
    - And maybe I would partly agree on this, just because they keep beating USA in important tournaments

    :drink:

    i'm just bored watching Bazil winning about everything.. :sleeping:
    :drink:

  • Then maybe you should dislike thet other teams that can't often beat Brazil

    This is not the only reason i don't like them..

  • Is it unpopular opinion that World Cup should be cancelled? I think we have enough competitions, which involves national teams and there is a better possible solution to distribute Olympic qualification.

    Due to the compact schedule for volleyball plus men's and women's tournaments in the same venue, 12 teams would be about the max. 16 teams could do it, but 8 matches in 1 venue in a day is a lot of volleyball and let alone getting everyone out of the arena and cleaning up.

    Olympics and FIVB want each confederation represented. So you've got 5 + host country. Only 6 spots remain.

    Most people do not complain about World Cup, just its length, location, and in the middle of the club season. This year they've moved it up to not be in the club season.

    World Cup could be split into 2 groups of 6 and then semifinals and medal matches to reduce number of matches played. Right now 11 matches spread over 15-16 days. Could be dropped to 7 matches into 10-11 days.

    The round robin gives you "best teams" winning out of the 12 participating. Even then you could just say "give me, World Champions plus top 5 FIVB ranked teams after 2015 World GP/World League to go to Olympics." Then confederation qualifiers and host.

    As Japan has hosted this tournament FIVB will not want to give money away for hosting this tournament.

  • Not really an unpopular opinion because nobody has ever expressed an opinion on the subject (not that I know of) but whatever.
    Baku women's teams should enter the Turkish league.

  • I wish regional leagues:

    Black Sea league:
    russia -->kazan, moskow, krasnodar
    azerbaycan -->bakus
    turkey -->1. - 2.teams
    Ukrainian -->Khimik
    others -->

    Balkan league:
    romania -->Bucuresti, tomis
    serbia -->vizura

    Czech Republic --> VK AGEL Prostějov
    Germany --> Dresdner SC, Allianz MTV Stuttgart
    Poland --> Chemik Police, Atom Trefl Sopot
    italy -->4. - 5. teams
    others -->

    baltic league:
    orhers -->

    later grand champions league :

    first three team from Black Sea league
    first two team from Mediterranean league
    first two team from europa league
    first team from Balkan league
    first team from baltic league
    first team from other leagues
    two wild card :rolll:

  • for we can see a better championship, we need an autonomous structure as turkish airlines basketball euroleague. Spanish are very brave and pioneers about it.
