Itas Diatec Trentino season 2012/2013

  • I though that it would be nice if we could discuss diffrent stuff about Trentino whats one of he greatest teams nowdays.

So I'll start with a question: "What do you think about this seasons performance of Trentino's players and how has their game and roles changed this season in you opinion?" :)

  • Juantorena's influence on matches has decreased at the expense of the slight increase of Kaziyski's influence and the noticeable, solid increase in Stokr's performance.

What I mean is that if Juantorena was the recipient of, let's say, 60% of the sets from Raphael last season, this season he gets 35-40%.

    Djuric is also noticeably improving.

Bari is weaker after every season. I think it's time for Stoychev to look for another libero.

  • What? Juantorena was usually the third option for Raphael last year. This year it doesn't change but the gap between the top 3 increases. Stokr is neary getting 10+ sets more than Osmany and Matey.
No matter what his fans say, last year Kaziyski was terrible. In the last month he displayed his best performance since 2009. He has an immense influence right now.
Stokr is playing his best ball this year ,contract year :cheesy: He is the MVP of the team with Matey.
Their bench doesn't give any contribution but since Stoytchev never uses his bench ,it doesn't matter.
As for Osmany I don't know if it is only because of injury but it is his worst performance since returning to proffessional volleyball. His service lost its influence , his attacks are predictable (always hitting diagonal) and his reception goes average to worse. I don't think Trentino can survive against Kazan with his recent performance.
I think their winning streak is more because of the decrease quality of the Italian league.

  • I don't want to go too deep in here as I am not among Trentino's biggest fans, but there's one thing you seem to forget. It is not about this season specifically, but rather something they have developed over the last several ones. The ability to fight and mostly win in big games - the mentality of winners. How often did they lose in three sets without any sign of resistance? Very few, I can only remember one or two games against Giuliani's Cuneo and one against Skra in their first (and only, I think) defeat against the Poles some years ago. Yes, they have lost some finals, missed some trophies in Italy due to Piacenza, Sisley, Cuneo or Macerata, but they have all suffered major problems, whereas Trento remained near the top, to say the least. Besides, who claims they are perfect? You mentioned a game against Zenit, in the thread for Serie A there is a comparison to Dinamo with Kurek, but I just can't agree. I would still bet on Trento and I know they would win 7 or 8 out of 10 games against the Russians. Remember what happened to Zenit in Doha when neither Trento, nor Zenit were in best shape. Moreover, both Zenit and Dinamo are having problems currently. Zenit got destroyed by Belogorie, they are not nearly as good as last year, Anderson is still underperforming, Dinamo even with Kurek will probably fail in two games against Trento.

Don't get me wrong, I am not defending them or something, they have their own problems, you correctly mentioned the bench, the rotation of players throughout the season. I have previously criticized Stoychev on the basis that Trento seemed out of ideas in the final days of the season - probably a very good reason for the lost finals against Cuneo and Piacenza. I don't like them too much for other reasons, but their success is undisputed.

About the quality of the league - nothing to discuss. I completely agree, but I don't think anyone takes seriously these records of straight wins apart from journalists with some pages to fill in.

  • In my opinion Trentino's players have changed their roles over the last years quite a few times. In the beginning(2007-2009) Matey was the score machine who got alot more sets than others in almost all matches, he was the MVP type player, who was responsable in alot of their success together with Visotto, but Winiarski was left behind, he didn't get the glory that he deserved. Than came year 2010, Juantorena and Stokr Raphael came, Juantorena, Raphael and Stokr proved themselves to the team right away, Kaziyski decided to change his style of play and be a more teqnical player than he was before, it was Matey's worst season, but thats obvious that if you cange your style than you will have difficulties in the beginning. Trentino still managed to win most of what they could becouse of the good performance of the new players. Than in the next season Kaziyski was way more impressive by scoring almost all sets in important moments and matches, he was/is the one who took over when things got hard, since that he has almost allways been in the 2 best players of the finals. He is the most trusted player in Trentino he is trusted in important moments and to spike most of the sets from bad reception. Meanwhile Juantorena developed a sick serve and Stokr got better and better in everything. This year Stokr and Juantorena started very well, Kaziyski didn't have a good start in the italian league but he was great in Doha and the MVP of the final. But when the Italian cup was nearby Kaziyski started to play on the level he use to and in the final he was great, also in yesterday's match against Perugia where he scored 31 points with great efficcency, that was also a hard match, thet shows that he is playing his best when things get tough, thats why I like him :) In my opinion Zenit is not that strong this season, the main opponent is Macerata, but Zenit might also get in great form so it wont be easy for any of them. SKRA is really weak this season, so they shouldn't be much of a danger.

  • What? Juantorena was usually the third option for Raphael last year.

I've put these percentages just to make a point, they were random. But last two seasons almost all of the sets to Kaziyski were against a triple block or a double block in difficult situations. Which meant he was the last option (far from saying his role wasn't key). Juantorena and Stokr received equal amount of sets at best. Two years ago I could say that Osmany got more sets from Rapha than Stokr. And Stokr is an opposite and he should get 10+ sets more than the OHs at average. Which he does this year.

Kaziyski decided to change his style of play and be a more teqnical player than he was before, it was Matey's worst season, but thats obvious that if you cange your style than you will have difficulties in the beginning.

Players don't decide to change their style of play all of a sudden like tennis players decide to change their racquets for example. This was purely the coaches decision.

Also, Yavor mentioned how prepared are Trento in every match. Another reason for their success for me is because Stoychev is one of the best coaches (if not the best) when it comes to pre-match preparation. But one of his weak sides is that he overrelies on his starters. If one of Osmany/Matey/Rapha gets a permanent injury, Trento will drop their level significantly and will no longer be favourites for anything.

What I mean to say that he decided it together with the coach, and it was the right choise, so far he has been alot better in teqnicue(he has pretty good teqnicue before he changed)

In my opinion Stoychev is the best coach when it becomes to tactics and preparations for the match. I also agree that he should use the bench more, Stefanski got to play only 2 full matches and the nr 8 middle didn't get to play even a whole match. Not using bench players puts too much preasure (I mean physical stress) on the starters. The last match with Perugia showed that the bench players have been underused. Matey had to play crazy (what he did luckily) to help Trentino win.

Is it because of Stoychev or is it because of Serniotti ?

I think Serniotti has a much more stronger case as a master of statistics and strategy than Stoychev ...

Maybe, I'm not in the team to know who is doing all of the work. But even if it is, then bravo to Stoychev for recruiting a very good team of specialists.

I see you are often saying that assistant coaches are better than the head coaches. Often saying that the success of Russia is because of Busato and not of Alekno, the success of Trento is because of Serniotti instead of Stoychev, Placci was also put forward as better specialist than Stoychev (I'm not going to comment on Placci-Naydenov), Gardini over Anastasi and so on and so on.
The good thing about being an assistant coach is that you don't take the blame after a loss/mistake. The responsibility is bigger for the head coaches, the risk of failure is bigger and they are pointed as reasons for failures. The other thing is also true - they also take the credit for the wins. And assistant coaches - they just sit quietly and do their work. They make the impression that they are faultless which is incorrect. But we'll see, I can't say anything for certain just because these are two different roles, the assistant and the head coach. That's why I'm curious how Placci will manage in head of Bulgaria NT. I didn't have a lot of opportunities to see him heading Cuneo last year.
