Basic volleyball vocabulary in different languages

  • I have an idea, it would be useful for all of us to have a list of volleyball words in various languages. I can start with a list in Italian. I hope every one can make a list in the language they know. So everybody would be able to read statistics and have a basic comprehension of a volleyball article in a language we don't know. :super:

    :lol: Well, If you know some Japanese then you may guess the meaning of some Chinses characters.Because Japanese partly derive from components of Chinese and Chinese cursive style calligraphy. Some of the Japanese characters have the similar meanings of Chinese ones. But some are different. For example 汤 in Chinese means soup. However in Japanese it means bath (I guess). :lol:

    well i've just learnt Hiragana and katakana alphabet and 4 kanji signs :lol: so i have no idea what you just wrote but it's cool anyway :D
    but i do recognise some of characters :D 人->that one as far as i know means human, and this -> 由 look similar to sun :D 二 -> and that means 2 :D :cup:

  • That's ok but in Spanish there diferences by genre in some words. In Spanish from America some words are differents. For example, in Peru and Argentina, armador/armadora for setters. In other south american countries they say levantador/levantadora. In Cuba, they call their setter/opposites atacante auxiliar.

    :lol: I see. It is hard, at least for me, to remember so many Hiragana and Katakana alphabets.Actually the Chinese spelling is easier. It is just like English letters (almost same writing and similar pronunciation). But the Chinses character is more complicated especially the traditional ones. :teach:


    Yeah. I know it is cool especially to have Chinese characters tattoos. It is a fashion,right?


    Yeah. 人 : actually it is a Hieroglyphic. It looks like a person walking.
    一 二 三 :those mean one, two ,three. It is easy. But after that from number four it gets complicated a little bit.

    in portugal we use other expressions for some off the words like...

    Outside hitter - jogador zona 4, (jogador de) "entradas"
    Middle blocker - central, (jogador de) "meios"
    Opposite - oposto, (jogador de) saídas, jogador zona 2


    team - equipa, clube
    ........................
    those are just some off the differences
