  • It refers to the country China. Such play was "invented"by the Chinese Team in the 80's if I am not mistaken. That's why they refer to the slide attack as "jogada China". It is a fair tribute they pay to Chinese volleyball.

    cute!! :cheesy:

Once Velasco in an interview said " At the beginning when the Asiatic teams started using this kind of attack :teach: , In Italy nobody like it, and every one considered it too strange. In Italy the players thought they weren'tt such crazy to jump without being sure the setter will set to them! And now it's the normality! " (the smile are supposed to show velasco expressionxD)

btw, this topic is a GREAT idea!!! Sorry I can't help, Italian is already done =)

    I can just add :

OH= martello (and all the other names), but sometimes someone use "martello" to mean "spiker" in general (including opposite)

    Whistle: fischio

and.. does exist "invasion" in english? :call: It's INVASIONE in italian.

ps If I'm not wrong there isn't a russian version... It could be usefull, for example to use rutracker ^^

  • I am interesting why anyone translate it to russian. I think because in fact volleyball in Russia is not so popular (for example there is only one quite big forum compare it with polish situation and discover polish forums are much bigger and there is plenty of them) and it is hard to meet someone from this country here or on volleyballmovies.
So I could try to do this but not today. I think tomorrow

It's possible, you just have to believe in yourself and really not care what other people say, because I've heard it all.
If you let someone else dictate what you're going to do in life, then you won't get there.

  • I always keep wondering if any other country/language calls the slide attack "China" as we do in Brazil/Portuguese

  • I always keep wondering if any other country/language calls the slide attack "China" as we do in Brazil/Portuguese

I think this is the most interesting term because it varies so much across languages, everything else is kind of a direct translation but slide is all over the place.

I think it's "china" or "corea" in most of Latin America - but I was watching a Puerto Rican stream and I could have sworn he was calling it "la bicicleta" (the bicycle....)

  • Nice topic, it's the first time I see it! 8o

I'll make few adds for the Italian:

    substition - sostituzione

Also 'cambio' (literally it means 'change') is very used. The technical term is 'sostituzione', though.

outside hitter - schiacciatore-ricevitore, banda, schiacciatore di posto 4, schiacciatore-laterale, attaccante di mano, ala

Also 'martello' (literally 'hammer') is often used. I would said it's one of the most used, actually.

And among the tipe of attack:

    - one, quick - 'veloce' it's right, but imho 'primo tempo' is used more often or at least as often. I would said that 'primo tempo' literally means 'first time', but actually in Italian the English 'first time' has to be translated as 'prima volta'; anyway, it's the ball usually set to the MBs

    - 'primo tempo dietro', 'veloce dietro' (in this case the second term is more used): when the MB attacks right behind ('dietro') the setter, for example like Bruno and Lucas often do. I don't know the English term.

    - 'sette' (literally 'seven') is the ball set to the MB between zone 4 and zone 3. I don't know the English version of it, though: may be is still seven?

And others had already wrote that 'tip' or 'gentle touch' is 'pallonetto'.

  • Is backrow attack called "pipe" in English? I always thought this was something Brazilian commentators invented
