The Rules - your opinion, suggestion

Last time we had some changes in volleyball and some new ideas: new ball, new libero system, "hawk-eye", golden formula...

During Congress in Rome, FIVB debated about new rules.
2 of them:
- substitutes without limits
- instead of sets, 4 parts, each 20 minutes

What would you like to change in volleyball if you would have a "power"? (: Or maybe volleyball don't need any changes?

This idea with 4x20 min. is an absurd for me. I hope it will never come true. I think, it would kill the volleyball, force completely different tactis and way of playing. I don't think it is neccessary to provide so revolutionary changes.
No limit for substitutions is less dangerous, but I think it would delay the game. Maybe they just should change the number of substitutions, I mean allowing more substitutions during the game. But no limit? No...

I think this is good idea. Each of us usually has duties and cannot be in front of the TV up to the end of the game which lasts ad infinitum. In the new situation it will be possible exactly for itself to plan the time. Rarely I have watched the long match until the end from the account of the lack of the time.

From those old suggestions we saw only the new ball and the new libero system completely realized, the "Golden" formula proved to be a failure, I hope we won't see it again and this year's World club Championship to be played with the normal system, the "hawk eye" is quite necessary, IMO, it was successfully introduced in the Polish Cup finals, I don't know why they don't like the idea..

So, maybe these stupid new suggestions by people spending money only on world congresses (the only benefit of FIVB spendings seems to be the volleyball camps built in developing countries) will fade away as most of the things they have offered in terms of volleyball development! FIVB and CEV truly suck at developing competition formats and choosing various hosts for respective events! FIVB particularly sucks even more when talking about new "rules"

Well, volleyball matches are very different: there are shorter and longer games, but usually we don't have matches, which last more than 2h30 (there are longer matches but not often). It is not a male tennis, where the game may last e.g 4-5 hours (or even more than one day  ; "world record" was broken this year). For some years we have been having 25 pts. system instead of 15 pts. when you had to finish two attacks to win one point and THEN the games used to be much longer.

Time limit will lead to teams trying to delay the play. Players arguing with referees, multiple substitutions, players taking plenty of time before serving, and players asking for sweeping the floor every now and then...
I really don't think this would help.

I hope none of these rules will happen

Substitution without limits will mean that there will be only specialists and no more allround players. An attacker with bad reception can be taken out everytime in backrow instead of learning to receive, a blocker can replace the setter at the net everytime the team serves or there can be the double substitution all the time so the team always has 3 attackers at the net. I don't even want to imagine that, it would completely change the character of the game and the education of players.

And the idea with playing on time, pleeeeeeeaaaaase :wall: 5-set matches ending 20-18 or so in the last set are the most exciting thing about volleyball, and also that a team after playing bad in one set can still win. What if a team starts bad and loses the first quarter very high?? The rest of the game would be totally boring because the leading team would go full risk on serve and just try to hold their sideout to keep the lead. If this is really going to happen I am gonna stop playing and watching volleyball

Exactly my point! I participated twice in Germany in tournaments where, due to the large number of teams and reduced time for finishing games, we played with timing.. How do you like the overall score of 1-1 (13-12, 11-12)??? :rolll: I am telling you, timing of volleyball games sucks! If anything like this ever happens, I'd also stop watching!!! Playing in a game like this is also ridiculous

So if we play 4 parts (quarters), what happens if the score is tied? Is it the winner of each quarter, or the total of four quarters? Do you still have to win by two?

It is an incredibly slippery slope if you change it to quarters. Right now, you have teams win by at least 6 points in a three set match, will 4 quarter matches be close? How many timeouts do coaches get in a match 2, 4, 6 or 8?

What about moving the attack line back .5 meter? Changes back row attacking a bit.

Or bringing back net calls on the defense when then hit the net when not involved in the play. Getting rid of the let serve.

When I played club volleyball 20 years ago, the ball handling rules where much stricter with overhead passes. The ball could rotate a tad, now it can look like a helicopter and not be a double hit.

Shorten sets to 21, but still play a best of 5. Or shorten sets to 15, but play 4 of 7.

Are they looking to get within 2 hours for TV? Three and four set matches right now are under 2 hours for men. Only in the women's game do 4 set matches go over two hours.

Changes are inevitable because television Authorities are complaining that the match lasts too long or too briefly and a reorganization is taking place in transmission of other programs.

I dont think volleyball needs to chance rules again. It happens all the time, and this is getting a little boring. Some chances were important but constant changes are unneeded. Almost all games has a duration between 1:30 - 2hr. So, i don't think duration of a game can bring so many problems to TV.
Also, changes all the time can complicate the understanding of volleyball by the public.

Volleyball has its own rules and that why i liked this sport.

a blocker can replace the setter at the net everytime the team serves or there can be the double substitution all the time so the team always has 3 attackers at the net.
USA NCAA volleyball allows 12 substitutions per set. Some teams use these substitutes like described above to run 6-2 offense. That can be a bit interesting though because teams need two good setters and two good opposites (more team play). Also 12 is not unlimited, so must plan ahead to prevent running out. And substitute process is faster than in international play so it does not seem to slow things down much.

Television has no future.
The model of the TV channel with timed programs has no chance to stand against Internet broadcast with multiple broadcast and replay options. At least it has no chance with sports and live events. Internet TV quality is closing from TV quality and will likely not be an issue for very long. The main problem is probably the business model. How will internet TV be valuable? By pay per view system ? By advertising ? By subscription ? I thinks it's only a matter of time before internet TV find out how to make profits and when it would be done, the old TV scheduled will simply appear like a nonsense.
I don't think that volleyball has to follow TV broadcast rules when TV's time as dominant media is count.

Liberos gain new freedom

Libero-for-Libero replacements will be allowed in all FIVB competitions as of January 1, 2011 following the unanimous decision made at the 2010 FIVB Congress in Rome from September 9-10.

Currently, the Acting Libero can be exchanged for the reserve Libero only once per match. However, this has limited the use of a second Libero, teams preferring instead to use 11 regular players and only one Libero or specialist defensive player. The new freedom will allow teams to replace the Libero with a second Libero – or with a regular replacement player – as often as is deemed necessary by the coach. This gives an incentive to the team to use a second Libero. All replacements are to be done without formality through the Libero Replacement Zone, which is roughly level with the team bench.

A further freedom has been granted to allow the coach to keep their best team on court and to maintain the spectacle for the viewing public: should a team with a single Libero declare the Libero "unable to play", a regular player can be converted or "re-designated" as a new Libero. Illness or injury now no longer feature as reasons for re-designation; being declared unable to play by the team is the only reason now needed for this process.

These new rules were presented to the Congress as a working document within Rule 19. The Rules of the Game Commission will publish a definitive wording on the FIVB website showing the whole of Rule 19 prior to official implementation.

i would say that the dicisions to chance make me think of my 2nd fave sport formula 1 they made some shitty changes as well and that did not do the sport well

i say no to 4 parts of 20 mins just let them play it is not something that should be done in 20 minutes
more substitutes mmm maybe

I think I'm gonna stop watching volleyball if they make this shitty rule 4x20 minutes. This pricks from FIVB do whatever they want, and their dumb ideas are a road to nowhere. They don't seem to understand, that their goal - to make volleyball a popular sport, is getting harder and harder to achieve mainly because frequent rules changes! I sometimes think, that we're not far away from times, when people will even sell their family for big enough amount of money.
