  • FIVB released the official post-Olympic ranking here. I was wrong about one thing, though. Ghana, not Bulgaria, is the team with the biggest drop (17 places) :D Bulgaria comes second in that negative ranking and is now 16th. But if you look at the placements in all these tournaments forming this position and its respective number of points (although for some reason continental championships are not counted...), then we can say it is fair and square. Mexico, Egypt, Canada, and Iran with great new positions.

  • FIVB will create a new test ranking beside the one which is in place at the moment. Instead of earning points for places in tournaments, the points in test ranking will be attributed for each match. After some time they will decide which ranking is better and represents good the strenght of each team.

Whoa this would be big news. Like an ELO score for volleyball. Where did you hear this?

  • One quirky thing is that they will not use it for the Olympics Groups. Using the ranking as of January 31st, while implementing the new system on February 1.

Thanks I was curious about future group distribution at Tokyo. Finally found proof that the rankings won't change.

  • Japan actually ranks too high for their level but we're definitely seeing a rise out of them lately. What I don't like about it is how extremely manipulated it is because of the VNL and World Cup inclusion. Anyone who thinks Japan is stronger than Serbia or some of the other teams in Europe and maybe Canada needs an eye check.

The Nishida and Ishikawa hype train are understandable because of the popularity of Haikyuu. It also have to do with asians being underrepresented and you see how Nishida gets up high to spike the ball with his height. It's kind of an adoration edging close to obsession because the rare small fishes like Nishida and Ishikawa are representing the small fishes like us.

Favorite players: M: Maxim Mikhaylov, Murilo, Serginho, Aaron Russell, Otavio, Simone Giannelli, Ivan Zaytsev, Tsvetan Sokolov, Michał Kubiak, Mariusz Wlazly, Pawel Zagummy W: Sheilla, Zhu Ting, Natalia, Fe Garay, Fofao, Gabi, Thaisa, Foluke Akinradewo, Wei Qiuyue, Ding Xia, Carli Lloyd, Fabi, Natalia Goncharova, Yuko Sano, Saoris Kimura and Sakoda

remember the new ranking is based on individual matches. If you play in international matches, you get more points than playing in your continental confederation. Your rank is also taken into account.

you win you get points. You lose you don’t get points.

Japan won 7 and lost 8 in VNL, so may have moved downwards on points.

However, with World Cup with 8 wins and 3 losses. They are going to move upwards regardless of teams not sending their top squads.
