  • Warm up tournament in Argentina
An international competition featuring boys’ youth teams from Argentina, Spain, Cuba and France began in Chivilcoy, Argentina on Saturday as each team count down to the FIVB Boys’ Youth World Championship which begins on Friday.

All four sides will be competing at the biennial tournament, also set to be played in Argentina.

    In Sunday’s matches Cuba overcame France 3-2 (21-25, 17-25, 25-19, 25-14, 15-8 ) with Spain seeing off hosts Argentina in straight sets (25-21, 25-21, 25-15).

Several local personalities, including Mayor Anibal Pittelli were present.

"It is with pride that this city welcomes you all, enjoy your stay,” Pittelli said. “We are very proud of having here a club like this one, Club Colón de Chivilcoy, with people that are happily welcomed into this competition not to talk of the fact that the Boys' Youth World Championship will be held in Argentina. We are very happy because we see the effort of all to help and give their utmost for such important events."

Spain and Argentina had clashed earlier in the weekend in a friendly ahead of the tournament with the hosts coming out on top 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-18 ) in Almirante Brown. City Mayor Dario Giustozzi was present for the match and said that: “our goal is to promote sport, in this case volleyball and therefore we have the stadium full of children that play it at different clubs in the city. This new chance of a previous match is really something very important for the City Hall as it is a friendly match that all enjoy making it a great party as there is no competition but more a friendly bond between both teams and the fans.”

    Argentina v France 3-0
The match started level with France finding answers thanks to its middle players while Argentina found power through spikes from their wing spikers. Both teams lost concentration and while the host kept attacking the European team found that its block helped keep them I touch. Argentina edged ahead before two aces helped them take the set.

The hosts tried to move ahead in the second but were continually pegged back by France, who remained within a point. Even though the Europeans remained close midway through, Argentina then managed to stretch their legs to take a 2-0 lead.

Argentina again took the lead in the third but France came bounding back to move four points ahead. However the pressure got to the French as they made a number of unforced errors to allow Argentina to tie at 19-19 before they sealed the win.

Argentina’s Gonzalo Lapera topped the score with 17 points.

    Cuba v Spain 3-0 ( 25-17, 25-18, 25-16)
Cuba obtained its second victory with a win over Spain earlier on in the evening as Fundadora, topped the scores with 25 point.

The match started level but Cuba improved its performance and went ahead at the second TTO 16-12 before eventually taking the set.

Spain could not find any answers to recover in the second set, and despite fighting point-for-point the NORCECA team kept the lead and pushed on towards the end to take a 2-0 lead.

Spain lost its concentrate in the third as Cuba put on a great performance to close the match and seal the win.

Cuba edged Argentina in a five-set thriller (25-17, 18-25, 20-25, 25-18, 15-12) on Wednesday to seal top spot in a four-team tournament held in Chivilcoy, Argentina ahead of the 2011 FIVB Volleyball Boys’ Youth World Championship due to begin in the country on Friday.

Meanwhile Spain saw off France in straight sets (25-20, 28-26, 25-18 ) to seal second place.

Cuba lead from the start of the first set with both teams risking their serves. Some unforced errors from the hosts gave the visitors momentum to take the set and the opening lead.

Argentina stepped onto the court with a different attitude in the second and captured the lead 8-3 and 16-9. Cuba fought back to take the lead again but it wasn’t enough as Argentina powered through to take the set.

The third set also saw the home team start well with Zornetta, Quiroga and Araya all showing their attacking prowess as they took a 2-1 lead.

Cuba made changes in the fourth because they knew they needed to win it to force a tie-breaker and they did just that, taking the match to a fifth set.

The final frame saw Cuba grow in confidence before they sealed the win and the title.

Earlier on in the day Spain had little trouble seeing off a French team that finished the tournament with just one point

  • So far the Greeks impressed :obey: they didn't lost set, very low number UE for this age  France is like English weather, yestreday lost set 9-25 vs Brazil but managed to win after 5 sets. :what:

Trademark of this WCH are UE, unbelievable number of errors in all matches :S

  • Cubans have bright future with these kids

Cuba always had players like this.
But too many of them did not play with NT for very long ...

  • Holy crap, how about Gonzalo Quiroga scoring 30 points in 3 sets against USA? Maybe these argentinian generation isn't as talented as the last two (time should tell), but if they can a scorer like this to play in high level and help Facundo and co., I think that's already great news.

By the way, who expected Bulgaria would lose to Egypt after they beated USA and Argentina?
