The Puerto Rican league

  • I do not know a whole lot about the league other than the hometown teams usually draw a large crowd for each match especially in the playoffs. The Puerto Rican league is a destination for several USA players who have recently completed their university education and are not ready or willing to play in Europe or Asia.

I am enclosing a post from VolleyTalk that discusses the UCLA Puerto Rican connection. The link to the original new article no longer works was in Spanish and the poster used an internet translator for the post...

Is Jim Polster (American OH) playing in Puert Rico? I saw his name in roster of one team, but in "position" was "medio" and "nationality - Perto Rico"

  • Yes indeed Jim Polster is playing in Puerto Rico. Every Friday, the Puerto Rico Professional Legaue games are being streamed live and free at MediaSports (www.mediasports.tv). You just have to register and log in. Actually, last Friday (July 25) Polster played. His team is not doing that good though.

On another note, it is true that some recently college graduates have played in the Puerto Rico league, tbut here are lots of top professionals who play or have played at the Puerto Rico Men's League (Milinkoivc-ARG, Araujo-BRA, Fusch-BRA, Salmon-USA, Billings-USA, Contreras-MEX, Stanley-USA, Ptak-USA, Cala-CUB, Contreras-DOM, DeSouza-BRA, Touzinsky-USA, Cardona-CUB, McKenzie-USA, Pascual-ESP, David Lee-USA, Gardner-USA, Millar-USA, Yoko-FRA, Elgueta-ARG, amongst many others). The league is rather short (3 and 1/2 months), but is good pay for such a short tournament, and the players go to Europe afterwards.

Watch the games, every Friday at 8pm EST, 7pm CT, 5 pm PT. If in Europe, it would be from 12 midnight on, depending on where u are.

Plataneros de Corozal Champion of Puerto Rico League 2008

  • Are you a team? cuz I know Ptak got injured pretty bad a year ago but he was good for sure

  • Thank you for your help but I want an opinion from somebody who see this players as I have already reviewed the information which is available in Puerto Rican federation site

Thank you again for your help

  • Puerto Rico needs to find a way to pay players more. Players can't live on $20k. They can go to other countries. The PR league is very good. They deserve to have players there, but it comes at a cost.

  • This is a great photo of Steve Klosterman. '07's championship was a fantastic achievement for the Changos. Losing those great players from the year before I'm sure the fans did not think they had a chance in '07. But the gringos came through!!

    [/quote]

  • Yeah, Klosterman Hildebrand and Tarr were great, too bad that only Tarr is playing this season, shame for the US vball as well
