And something about this match what I found on devovolleyball.com

"I was privileged to see the German Cup Final on the weekend. Not privileged in the sense that it was a wonderful match (although it was a great spectacle) but privileged in the sense that after all these years I still regularly get to see stuff that I have never seen before.

The coach of one of the teams had to come up with a solution to replace his injured libero. Now a lot of coaches would got another player to play libero and get on with it. This coach however decided that the best solution was to take out his opposite and play with three receivers. The photos below show the lineups (with rotational positions) while the setter was in the backrow. The frontrow players are circled, the setter is number 6 and it is easier to look at them in order.

If the photos are sufficiently clear, you can see a complicated series of situations, two of which require the setter to run the furthest distance that is possible on a volleyball court, instead of the zero situations that is normal. If the numbers are sufficiently clear, you will see that in one rotation the setter was ALWAYS out of rotation on the serve.

This is notable for several reasons. Firstly, how many times do you see a rotational error that makes it more difficult for something. I’ve seen a team deliberately stand out of rotation to get an advantage but not the other way around. Secondly, the referees didn’t notice it for four sets. Thirdly, the other team didn’t notice it. Now it is conceivable that they didn’t say anything because they realised that they actually had an advantage because of the error, BUT… Fourthly, for two sets the opponent served their highest risk serves in those two rotations, making quite a few errors and generally not taking advantage of the situation. At the cost of a set. In the third set someone figured it out and they served several runs of points in those rotations, and they won both sets under 17.

And I left the match slightly less frustrated than I had been for the first two sets."

  • Hahahah, strange is a weak word in this case! This coach doomed his team to a 100% loss... I have only seen this rotation in some high school teams where they just have 5 boys and a setter, no libero, no opposite, nothing... I have also seen middle-blockers playing in position 4 because of no position 4 alternatives available, opposites playing in 4, even some crazy miraculous subs by Copra Piacenza this season.. :D I would say, for a professional team playing in the German Cup final, innovative, stupid and doomed to fail! Nice one Justyna, the article was not a usual one to read ;)
