  • Montes Claros is the first finalist of Brasilian Superleague.

Today playing at home they won Sada Cruzeiro in a incredible game, they came out loosing 0x2, but helped by the warm supporters, turn around and won 3x2. The match had a lot of discussion during all sets, and make things even more emotional. The opposite Wallace, from SADA, injuried two fingers in middle of tie-break, during a blocking attempt. Two of his fingers dislocated, so he had to left court, giving space to Samuel.

The opposite Lorena also got the historical mark of most scorer in a season, he needed 15 points to make this achievement and scorer 20 points in the game, including the last one of the match. It is good to remember, of course, that this season has more teams, and therefor, Lorena had more matches to play and score more. Anyway he beated a mark that was being hold for almost 10 years.

Now Montes Claros waits the winner between Cimed and Pinheiros in the other semifinal.

 Definetly....but was very deserved....Bruninho is playing a lot!!!!Not even Gustavo and Rodrigão were able to get his sets...hehehehe

The final will be a good match, I think Cimed is more team then Montes Claros, but Lorena and cia have a big heart, and will definetly fight till the end!!!!

  • Don't know if there's a whole lot of people interested, but, anyway, here are my thoughts about those results and the upcoming final:

I was kind of rooting for the other way around, as I felt a final between Sada and Pinheiros would've been much more interesting. IMO, Sada played the best volleyball among all semifinalists during most of the competition. In quaterfinals, they crushed Minas very easily. Unfortunately, their level decreased significantly, as I felt Sandro became kind of lost, Bruno Zanuto and Renato Felizardo also missed their A-games and the team became too dependent on Wallace, who's a nice player, has a lot of potential, but it's not quite ready yet.

Montes Claros, on the other hand, had a simpler game, but very effective, and I was very impressed by their setter, Rodriguinho. He completely owned his opponents' block. Not only he knew exactly when to use Lorena (with no doubt, best player of the championship), but he also made Acácio produce a lot. To that, you add players like Diogo and Piá, which are not like top level, but both stepped up big time. I think Piá, especially, it was very important for him to beat his old team. What he didn't have in techique, he made up with a lot of heart.

Pinheiros started Superliga actually very bad and, at the middle of 1st turn, I couldn't see how they'd advance to semifinals. But Cebola did a marvelous job with those guys, and made them into a team, in the end. Marcelinho was back in his best form and MB's were very good too, especially Rodrigão (which surprised, 'cause I'm not a fan of him, but I admit he was one of the most solid players). Their problem is that, facing Cimed, they couldn't overcome some tactical kind of simple problems and I blame that, believe it or not, in nerves. Although Pinheiros players are super experienced, they felt the pressure playing against a team that hasn't missed one final since it was created.

I think this year Cimed is not nearly as strong as they were the last couple of years. Really, they won't be able to top the level they reached last year. Their game is kind of predictable, but they're very good at it. They're not doing anything too different, and other teams know how they play, but even though they get close to beat them, they still aren't able too. I think, going out on a limb, the best thing about Cimed this year is their opposite, Bob. This also surprises me a lot, because, in paper, technically, he's their weakest player. But the guy's really overcoming himself, I never saw him playing this good. I also feel, like Piá and some other players from Montes Claros, he's not that good of a player, but he's making it up by playing with a lot of heart.

So, there, you get it. I think this year this is what's making the difference. Some teams were actually technically a lot stronger, like Minas and Sesi, that got eliminated early on, and also the ones that didn't make past the semis, but some players are so driven into this that they're surpassing the technicall aspects of the game.

Probably Cimed will win, but it'd be really cool if the underdogs took it home. And since heart e drive is making a huge difference this year, I say they actually have a shot at it. Let's see...

Lorena (with no doubt, best player of the championship)

Could you give me some more information about this player? Why is he not in the NT if he is doing that great in the championship?

Lorena (88Kg, 1,98m, birth 01/12/1979) is a nickname. His name is Fabrício Stevens Finoti Dias. He's called like that because Lorena is the city where he is born in.
Lorena has been an average player. He was just okay and stood out only this season. We expect him to be next Bernardo's roster.

To complement, on what elcioj has said about Lorena. I remember when this guy first came out, like 7 or 8 years ago, in our Superliga. He already was impressive, but very inconsistent at that time. Then, he went out, I think he played a lot of time in France, and maybe also in Italy A-2.

The thing about him is that he's very courageous. His team depends too much on him, but never lets down. He's very poweful attacker and has an amazing jump serve, too hard to receive. And he plays with a lot of passion, he's always leading his teamates and calling their fans, when they play at their stadium. Montes Claros's supporters absolutely love him.

Unfortunately, he's not that young anymore, so he probably won't have much of a chance in NT. He's in the pre-list for WL. Obviously Vissoto will be one of opposites. Lorena would have to fight with Wallace, Theo and João Paulo for the other spot. I actually think none of those guys are playing as good as him, but the age factor might be taken into account. Right now, Wallace is not as good as Lorena, but he shows a lot of promise and may one day be the best brazilian opposite.

  • Thanks to both of you for the replies! I was very curious about this player, and since I couldn't find much info about him online (in a language I could understand :) ), what you explained draws the overall picture!

I am, I am heheh Good luck in the final!

  • Cimed/Florianópolis wins Brazilian league for the 4th time!!!!!!

The team of setter Bruninho won today the final against Monstes Claros by 3x0 (25/22, 25/20 and 31/29) and tie it up with Minas as the biggest champions in Male league.

Monstes Claros started the game better, while Cimed looked a bit nervous, making a lot of mistakes in service. But soon the get their head together, and leaded by a fantastic match of setter Bruninho, that many times let his players against just one man block, they recovered in first set, and win easily in second.

The third one was a real fight. Lorena called the heart of his players, and they fighted till the end. With two blocks in a row, Cimed finished in 31-29!

Both teams made a lot of mistakes, duel to the tension of the game, specially in service, cause they knew was an important aspect in today's match. Lorena looked to ansious, and could not be decisive in service as he usually is. In the other side, Cimed played quite well, played as a group, and made use of a good strategy, that kind of stoped with Montes Claros wishes. But over all was a good event, nice party, and good game.
