  • Remat ZALAU changes head coach for the start of the New Year
During a special press conference held at the local sports hall, the leadership of Romania’s Remat ZALAU introduced to the media the newly appointed head coach of the team, Mr. Mircea Dudas, who in the past mentored some more high-profile teams such as Tomis CONSTANTA and U CLUJ-NAPOCA. Mircea Dudas joins the team in a critical moment, just one week before the Champions League home game against the German champions of VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN. He will be assisted by the previous head coach, Mr. Ovidiu Macarie.
After a series of ups and downs, Remat’s officials hope that the team will regain the right balance and continue successfully the battle in the “iron Pool” of the 2011 CEV Champions League and also in the Romanian national league.
Mr. Dudas stated during the press conference: “We still can do a good job because we can improve our level. Remat is quite difficult to defeat, even for Europe’s strongest Volleyball teams. We have to progress in many aspects, including the serves and the defense, from which we can gain a lot. Speaking about the next game, with VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN, even though the Germans are the pre-favorites, we will do our best, because we’ll count on our chance; anything may happen. We can’t predict from the lockers which team will win, this will be determined only on the playground”.
The libero of the Romanian team, Adrian Feher, believes that the new coach will help the team reconstruct their tactics. He said: “We hope to play better than we did in Germany. With the help of our new coach we’ll try to avoid some mistakes we did in the past. I hope that the support of the fans will help us achieve our first victory”.
Szabolcs Nemeth, who plays as outside hitter for Remat ZALAU, expressed his hope for the next game: “VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN is one of the best teams in Europe, but in Pool D is probably the most accessible opponent. We’ll try to do our best. Winning is our biggest wish and I hope that the fans will understand that and will be there to support us”.

  • Second national title for Remat ZALAU
In the final match of the 2010/2011 Romanian national league held at the local sports hall in Zalau, Remat ZALAU defeated Stiinta Explorari BAIA MARE 3:0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-20). The game was clearly a delight for all the fans that came to support the team from Zalau as Remat managed to defend the title from last year after a breathtaking rally.
It was Andras Geiger & Co. who offered the audience a spectacular game, with many thrilling moments which blown up the atmosphere. While Geiger, Peter Nagy and Szabolcs Nemeth scored some fantastic attacks, libero Adrian Feher and setter Andrei Stoian collaborated perfectly when dealing with difficult balls. And with the outstanding blocks of Gjoko Josifov and Vasile Afloarei, the team got a comfortable position through the game.
After the match, Andras Geiger said: “This is a very special and beautiful night for us and we have to enjoy this moment. It’s unbelievable how we feel now that we got the Championship!”
The performance is even greater considering the strong shape shown by the main rivals of Remat during the 2010/2011 season. In spite of a few disappointing results in the beginning of the second part of the season, the players from Remat ZALAU were strongly determined to continue fighting for the crown. In an attempt to support them in achieving their goal, the leadership of Remat changed the head coach of the team in March, signing German mentor Michael Merten. The result of the change was obviously positive: ZALAU had a fresh start in the Playoffs, storming to some superb victories against Steaua BUCHAREST. After that Remat ZALAU demolished Dinamo BUCHAREST in the semifinals and then the team was also in a perfect form in all three matches played against a very ambitious Stiinta Explorari, claiming quite easily the title.
The players from ZALAU showed their absolutely remarkable skills and strong will in the crucial moments of all the battles for supremacy, proving that they are worth winning the championship for the second consecutive time. And for sure they were helped, as well, by the great supporters that created a special atmosphere during all the home matches, being probably one of the most important weapons Remat had during this season. “We have the best supporters ever!” Peter Nagy said.
“We are very happy for this great result, because we all fought hard to achieve it”, head coach Michael Merten stated. “I hope that we’ll work together the next season, too. Now we can think about a second campaign in the CEV Champions League” he added.
“Remat claimed even the matches against Dinamo that is potentially the best Volleyball team in Romania; we have efficient players that worked a lot to achieve their goal. For sure, we’ll manage to be the first team in the Romanian league in the future, too. We would like to have such great performances in the international competitions that we are going to attend” said Ovidiu Macarie, assistant coach of the club.
