Belgian League 2010-2011

  • The new season in the Belgian League started with the Supercup game between the usual suspects Noliko and Roeselare.

    Belgian Supercup 2010

    Noliko Maaseik - Knack Randstad Roeselare 0-3 (23-25, 16-25, 21-25)

    Line-ups:

Noliko: Ferraz Eloi (setter), Deroey (opposite), Radovic (middle-blocker), Van De Voorde (middle-blocker), Klinkenberg (attacker), Maan (attacker), Derkoningen (libero).

Roeselare: Depestele (setter), Tuerlinckx (opposite), Vlam (middle-blocker), Celitans (middle-blocker), Verhanneman (attacker), Hoho (attacker), Geerinckx (libero).

    Topscorers:

    Noliko: Radovic 8, Klinkenberg 8

    Roeselare: Tuerlinckx 15, Verhanneman 14

Both squads were missing players, this is why the line-ups were not optimal. Noliko had to use Deroey as an opposite due to the absense of the two regular opposites Klapwijk and Sidibe, Verhelst was missing for Roeselare on the other side. Due to the WCH preparations, Ivan Contreras (Mexico, Roeselare) and Nathan Wounembaina (Cameroon, Noliko) were also not present for the Supercup game.

  • 3 points for Knack in Averbode
A match of two faces the one Knack had last night against 4th place Toyota Wouters Averbode. Before the match everybody knew that one of their key players was injured and was not even on the referees sheet and during warm-up everybody noticed that their starting opposite Stephen Shittu was not attacking balls so it meant they will play with their second opposite on court.

That did not create any sort of relaxation from our guys in blue who played in white last night and they took the first set easy with a score of 14-25.

The second set was much closer since Averbode started to play and to put some normal pressure on their opponent. With that the fact that our guys started to make some mistakes that were just not present during the first set and they had to focus at the end of the set to come out with the win with a tight score of 22-25.

The third set was when our guys continued with some unnecessary errors in court and that gave Averbode a good chance to take their first set 25-17.

Coach Baeyens decided to make a small change in lineup for the 4th set. He had played the entire match with Tuerlinckx as opposite and Verhanemann and Hoho in reception, but for the 4th set he decided to bring Contreras in the opposite position and to change Tuerlinckx in place of Verhanemann and it made an immediate impact this time since the set was won with some great blocking and counter attack to finish the match 1-3 with a final score of 19-25.

    Knack in the Cup Final!
Last night was suppose to be the night when Lennik stunned Knack Randstad to reach themselves the Cup Final. At least that is what they had said all over the press. They had high hopes and considered that Knack have had enough problems lately that this was the moment to do it. Well the day came and went and Knack still finishes on top somehow winning the second leg of the semifinal of the cup 1-3.

Knack started smoking and it was evident that the pressure got to some Lennik players since they kept making errors to give Knack easy point in that opening set. Knack took it with a score of 25-22.

The second set as we have seen many times saw a Lennik side more focused and a Knack side a bit more relax and not as sharp as in the first set. Lennik was able to hurt our guys in blue with some service pressure that made it impossible for our guys to play with all the options. Lennik took that set 25-21 to make the match very interesting.

The third set still saw a motivated and determined Lennik side but slowly Knack kept chipping away points and in the latter part of the set and thanks to some great serving from the blue side Lennik finally broke down and gave the qualification away. Knack took that third set 19-25 and with that the place in the Final of the Belgian Cup.

In the fourth set coach Baeyens made changes in the lineup. He took out Frank Depestele and put Stijn D´Hulst in for setting, he took out Ivan Contreras and put in Hendrik Tuerlinckx in the opposite position, took out Mathijs Verhanneman and left Kristof Hoho and Sam Deroo in the court. Our guys still were able to finish the game by winning in 4 sets with a convincing 20-25 score in the 4th.

Overall it was not the most exciting matches ever and not the cleanest one to watch but considering what was on the line and the fact that our guys were playing in Lennnik where it is always hard to come back with a victory. The goal was to win the match and once again and for the third time these two teams face each other and our guys come back with a 3-1 victory.

The Cup Final will be played on the 12th of February 2011 in the Lotto Arena in Antwerpen. It will be once again Roeselare vs. Maaseik in a matchup that over the years has become the expected one in the Belgian Volleyball.

  • No surprise, Maaseik versus Roeselare in the final. At least it's not obvious which team will win. Otherwise, both the league and the cup would be boring, and now it's not. It would be nice, if the third team joined the challenge, though.

    The Cup goes to Roeselare!
One of the two prices in the Belgian Competition was decided last night in what until now has been the best and most exciting match this season. The traditional Maaseik-Roeselare final did not disappoint the 5000 plus spectators that went to watch the great match. It seems to be a continuation of the great matches those two teams had against each other in the final of the Competition last season.

The first set started close with both teams trying to establish themselves inside the court but then and at the end of the set Maaseik was able to break away with a couple of points and that proved to be enough to take that set with a score of 25-20 in what was to be the biggest difference in points for the night.

The second set saw a Knack Randstad taking the lead and defending it for the better part of the set. They were able to defend and transition at a higher rate than the opponent and at the end were able to defend the small lead to take that second set 22-25.

The third set seemed to be exactly like the second where Roeselare was able to build a lead of a couple of points but then Maaseik in the last stretch of the set started serving with a high efficiency and that put Roeselare in trouble and lost the lead they had work so hard to get during the set. At the end Maaseik takes this third set in what seemed to have started to define the outcome of the night. Score of this set was 26-24 and this gave Maaseik a commanding 2-1 lead.

The fourth set seemed that it could have been the decisive set in favor of Maaseik but our guys never gave up and kept chipping away points. Maaseik at a certain moment of the set had a big lead of 17-14 and with all the momentum on their side it seemed that the contest was pretty much over. Our guys in blue never stopped trying and made it close and with that made the night a lot more exciting by taking the set 25-27 and forcing a decisive 5th set.

The fifth set was back and forth with both teams claiming the lead during the set. Everybody in the Lotto Arena kept enjoying and suffering with every point that was fought by both teams. Maaseik seemed to have again decided the night when they took a 2 point lead entering the last moments of this decisive set but once again our guys never gave up and even defended a Match point against them to tie the score and to extend the set as much as necessary. At the end and thanks to some unforced errors by Maaseik Knack Randstad takes this set with a 15-17 score and with that the title of Belgian Cup Winners.

The match could have been won by any of both teams. At some moments Maaseik looked to be a lot stronger than Roeselare but once again this shows that team effort can overcome many challenges inside the court. If the finals of the Championship are once again between these two teams then buckle up for a bumpy and exciting ride. Now while Maaseik had to still think about their European campaign, Knack can focus fully on the upcoming play-offs that will begin shortly with them visiting Averbode this coming Saturday.

Congratulations to all the staff and players and also to all the fans that went to support our guys. If the outcome of the match would have been decided in terms of the best supporters then there would have not been a contest at all since the fans for Roeselare were a lot more vocal and present during the important moments of the night. A nice night indeed.

  • History is in the making!

The Belgian league is currently in a final 6 phase (top 6 teams of regular competition meet again in series home and away matches).
After beating Maaseik in straight sets, Lennik now also beat Roeselare with a clear 3-0 victory (-19, -18, -14).

    1. Maaseik 7 21
    2. Roeselare 7 18
    3. Asse-Lennik 7 17
    4. Halen 7 8
    5. Averbode 7 8
    6. Menen 7 5

There are still 3 games to play for each team in which Lennik only meets the bottom 3, while Roeselare still has to beat Maaseik at home to remain in second position.
After this final 6, the two top teams finally meet in a best-of-five series.

If Roeselare doesn't win 0-3 or 1-3 at Maaseik and no further surprises occur then, finally, after 10 or 15 years we will have a team in the play-off finals, other than Maaseik or Roeselare.

I think Lennik is currently clearly the strongest team. Maaseik and Roeselare look tired.

  • Would be cool! So Tony Krolis is doing really well then?

BTW, what a weird play off system.

Indeed, Krolis is currently probably the best opposite in the Belgian league (better than Klapwijk, let's see if he gets an invitation for the Dutch team).
But the whole team is in great shape:
    - Tim Verschueren is an excellent setter
    - Petric and Van Lankvelt are two all-round players (Petric, in my opinion is better than Nikic, who played for Roeselare two years ago).
    - Verhees is currently best blocker in our league (also great in attack and serve - there are rumours he will go to Cuneo)
    - Radic is also doing great in attack and block
    - Plot is a very secure libero

On top of that, they show great fighting spirit. This in clear contrast with Roeselare and Maaseik, who look tired.
