  • Generali UNTERHACHING wins season opener in a hurry
The pre-season wasn’t necessarily what the long-time coach of Generali UNTERHACHING Mihai Paduretu had hoped for. With a lot of national team players on the roster gone for the World Championship in Italy and coming back very late prior to the start of the season, the tune up for the first Champions League season of the German cup winners isn’t done yet. However, when the German Bundesliga started over the weekend, Paduretu didn’t have much to complain.
Generali UNTERHACHING got off to a perfect start by beating VCO Berlin 3:0 (25-10, 25-21, 25-19). Opposing coach Söhnke Hinz had hoped for picking up one set or two from what he called one of “the big ones” of the league, but the visitors from Bavaria finished off his team, which is in fact the German junior national team, in a hurry. The young squad from Berlin could play for only 62 minutes.
Berlin got only 10 points in a lopsided first set and only then “became better” as Paduretu observed. However, his team controlled the match all the way. “Our victory was at no time in danger”, Paduretu stated. “By no later than the middle of sets two and three we were already ahead significantly.” Paduretu used all players and gave even match time to Robert Hupka, Max Günthör and Roko Sikiric who were nursing injuries lately.
Paduretu was pleased with the significant victory: “It was important that we didn’t give up a set and that no one is injured. Before the first game there is always certain nervousness, no matter what the opponent is, but this is quite normal. But that wasn’t a problem after we put away the first set very quickly”.
Until the next league game on Sunday, October 31, Paduretu and his team are travelling to Italy to play two teams starring in the local first division, i.e. Modena and Piacenza. Paduretu wanted these games badly to speed up the process of his team growing together. “In no sports homogeneity is as important as in Volleyball. We need to find ourselves as a team and are therefore looking forward to this little trip”.
On Sunday, Generali UNTERHACHING hosts evivo DÜREN whom they beat in last season’s cup final.

  • Interview with Generali's coach Mihai Paduretu: "We are happy with our achievements but we want to go for more"
The first half of the season left very little room for improvement for Germany’s Generali UNTERHACHING. The guys around coach Mihai Paduretu are currently ranked second in the German Bundesliga behind SCC BERLIN after half of the regular season, they already qualified to the final of the national cup for the third consecutive year where they will defend their title and in two weeks they will join the Playoffs 12 of the 2011 CEV Champions League by playing JASTRZEBSKI Wegiel of Poland. It is hence time for Paduretu, who just turned 44, to draw a line and look ahead waiting for the next successes to come.

Mr. Paduretu, how does your balance sheet look like after the first half of the season?
“I'm satisfied. In the Bundesliga we only lost at the beginning of the season to SCC BERLIN. Nevertheless, it is far from being a stroll and we still haven't achieved much. Sometimes we still have problems. The newly assembled players have worked pretty well. We were able to maintain our level of play, and we still can get better. The integration of the new players worked very well because we are a great Volleyball family here, including the fans and all the other helpful hands”.

You have reached the final of the national cup for the third consecutive time...
“In comparison with the Bundesliga we have already claimed something in this competition. There’s the dream final between my side, two-time defending champion, and Bundesliga winner VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN. In 2003 we played this final already in the same constellation with our opponents winning 3:1 at home. Compared to the last season, however, we had no luck with the draw so far. With SCC BERLIN and MOERSER SC we had to put away heavy rocks. This shows our strength. We have earned the final and deserve to be there”.

And what do you think about your CEV Champions League debut?
“Just by making it to the CEV Champions League we have reached a new level. And my boys have made a point right away in the first game with the home win against CSKA SOFIA. Then, the other teams, as well as players' agents, became aware of our players. The home game against Zenit KAZAN was a real party, even though we lost. We are in the Playoffs 12, so everything that comes now is a bonus. We take it game after game and try to gather experience”.

How did the participation in the CEV Champions League have an impact on the general attention deserved to UNTERHACHING?
“Especially as far as the media coverage is concerned, it has done a lot. There are more reports now, even nationwide. The attention has doubled. All home games in the Champions League were broadcast live. However, we must, unfortunately, cover the production costs by ourselves”.

What are your expectations and wishes for the season?
“I expect some more good performances by the team, and I hope that we can stay healthy. We want to play as spectacular as FC Barcelona does in football. Regarding our fan-base and attendance-figures at home games we have made some progress, I hope it stays that way. Together with our presenter Sven Rautenberg and Maxi Greif the fans are a great mix, our “Discotheque of the League" is admired nationally and internationally. Also our organizing chief, Horst Drexlh and the Management Board with Josef Köck, Agnes Fischer and Rudi Stein are doing a great job. I hope that they get more support”.

    What else is developing?
“Our Volleyball department as a whole is growing. Our new youth coach Camilo Globe as well as our player Huib den Boer are doing everything they can to show to the children involved in our youth development program that Volleyball is all about fun. I am aware that there it is not only the pro team Generali UNTERHACHING, but that there is an entire Volleyball department within the TSV Unterhaching here. This Volleyball family is important to me”.

    What must be improved?
“We are constantly looking for new partners. We would also like to expand our great army of volunteers. The team around my guys has to be the perfect mix of full-time staffers and volunteers. But make no mistake: without our volunteers, who work with so much passion, we would not be where we are now”.

  • Hey Mattias,
How do u see Simon Tischer as a setter? I dont know how succesful he is with Geman NT but in Turkish league, i really like his sets. One of the best setters in the league.

I guess you mean Simon Tischer ;) He's definitely one of the world's best!

  • Simon Tischer is a great setter, but i don't know why in NT he never had opportunity to be starter. In clubs he always plays a great volleyball.

    Never ?( 8|

He was a starter like a decade, they had no other setter until this Steuerwald, and even now he is playing decent minutes in NT. I think you missed like 5-6 years of german NT games :D

Never was a exaggeration. I meant in important competitions like OG and WCh he was not starter. In 2008 Frank Denhe was starter. In 2009 in European Championship and European League Steuerwald was starter. And now in WCh again Steuerwald. Of course in all this competitions he had some opportunites to play and in some mathces he was starter. But in the last 3 years he was not the first option as setter in NT.
