  • Team West wins 2011 Russia's "All Stars Game" Photo Gallery
The fifth edition of the All Stars Game organized by the Russian Volleyball Federation - this time in the extremely cold city of Kemerovo and with an innovative formula - ended with the victory of the Team West that needed four sets to defeat their colleagues and friends from the Far East (25-20, 24-26, 25-16, 25-22). Although the temperature had dropped down to -30 °C outside, the brand new local Volleyball arena witnessed a “hot” game, where quite a few of the most accomplished Russian and international stars were able to put up an exquisite game accompanied by the right and always extremely pleasant surrounding ambiance.

After a splendid preliminary show featuring young singers and dancers that definitely helped fire up the passionate audience of Kemerovo and with the local arena being filled to maximum capacity, the 2011 “All Stars Game” starring Team West (Zapad according to the Russian denomination) and East (Vostok) was ready to start out with a total of 8 different nationalities (apart from Russia, there were also players from Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Hungary, Poland and the USA) being represented in the rosters of the contenders for the trophy.
According to the formula worked out by the Russian Federation, a total of 16 players were at the disposal of their respective coaches, Vladimir Alekno and Andrey Voronkov, and no limit was foreseen for the substitutions per set. The event was organized in presence of the highest authorities of the Russian Volleyball Federation, including President Stanislav Shevchenko, as well as of the Governor of the Kemerovo Region, Mr. Aman Tuleyev, who had decided to place this competition under his personal patronage.
The local Volleyball club, Kuzbass, joined the Russian Superleague for the first time this season and Volleyball is expected to turn into a major attraction in this neighborhood where actually the most popular discipline is bandy, a winter sport similar to ice hockey but where the puck is replaced by a ball.
After 4 editions where the Russian national team had played the best foreigners competing in the Superleague, this re-styled format was to be completely tested but, according to the organizers, it was certainly going to stimulate the attention of the audience and create a more “friendly” ambiance also for the so-called “legionnaires”.

Team West started with a terrific line-up including Kazakov, Muserskiy, Mikhailov and veteran setter, 41-year old Vadim Khamuttskikh, but Team East well supported by the local audience was not less impressive, with a few players towering well above 200 cm. Team West went up 8:5 by the first mandatory stop of the opening set and Semen Poltavsky widened the gap with his terrific jump serves (11:6) whose speed was measured at up to 130 km/h! US American Clayton Stanley – who this past summer moved from Zenit KAZAN to Ural UFA – and 38-year old Igor Shulepov clawed back for Team East (10:14) but Taras Khtey stamped an ace to call for the second technical break (16:10). With Dinamo MOSCOW’s captain Sergey Grankin having taken the spot of the setter, Team West was literally dominating the scene and a last comeback of the guys in blue jerseys was stopped first by a time-out of coach Alekno and then by a splendid crosscourt of Poltavskiy (24:20) before a silly mistake of Shulepov put an end to the first set.

Although all players were trying to perform at their best, it was evident that the ambiance was somehow a bit more relaxed than usual, but this is actually also the additional plus of that kind of “exhibitions”. Team East did not waste any time to set the pace in the opening of the second set and Nikolay Pavlov – winner, together with Clayton Stanley of a special contest held yesterday - was simply devastating from the serving line (9:2). Team East maintained the right momentum (16:10) before Semen Poltavsky exploited his turn to send out some real missiles (16:13). The “Westerners” almost cut the gap with the splendid defense of libero Yanutov and their solid blocks, before the scoreboard finally displayed a tie at 17 after Team East hit the antenna in attack. Although the audience of Kemerovo loudly celebrated German Björn Andrae – who is currently playing for Kuzbass - as he joined the game, Team West could count on the terrific blocking skills of giant Dmitriy Muserskiy, whose ace moved the score up to 23:21 for the “guests”. The final rush was breathtaking: Poltavskiy missed a set ball for his side by sending the ball too long and then he handed over the set to Team East as he was not able to control his power after a shaky set of Khamuttskikh (26-24).

Set nr 3 got off with regular ties before Team West could sail away (16:11) with a mini-break personally signed by US American and Zenit KAZAN’s star Reid Priddy. The guys from the Far East were not ready to bury their hatchets but Team West was really well organized – in spite of the many substitutions allowed by the playing system – and even the serving turn of Clayton Stanley could not do much to reduce the gap (19:15). An ace of the always outstanding Maxim Mikhailov forced Vostok’s coach Voronkov into a break but the guy who is probably considered Russia’s mot talented up-and-coming player was absolutely lethal and his contribution was fundamental in moving the count up to 2:1 for the visitors (25-16).

According to the wishes of Mikhail Podlozhniy, Competitions Director of the Russian Volleyball Federation, the formula the organizers had opted for this time was very much likely to pave the way for an excellent ambiance from the start up to the end of the All Stars Game here in Kemerovo and that was absolutely the case as the teams were delighting a passionate but fair audience with all their best skills. There was also some additional fun at the first mandatory stop of the fourth set as Reid Priddy and a couple of more “Western” players were playing the role of quick-moppers, once again showing the very special character of this competition. Back to the real sportive action, Team West was again the dominant force on court and this time the guys around Vladimir Alekno were not to be stopped – even by the fact that Reid Priddy played as setter! – with Ukrainian-born Maxim Panteleymonenko demolishing any hope of the local audience to go for the tie-break (25-22).

The 2011 “All Stars Game” came to a close with the awarding ceremony, where some players – like Dmitriy Muserskiy, Maxim Mikhailov or local hero in Kemerovo Björn Andrae – received individual prizes alongside Alexander Gerasimov, who could celebrate his 36 birthday in front of a very special and unique audience.

  • Andrii Diachkov made his debut for Lokomotiv Novosibirsk today. I think he's not a bad replacement for Sammelvuo at all, his first game was more than promising - 12 points in 3 sets. Overall, Novosibirsk ruled the service line with 12 aces against 6 from Belgorod (4 for Muserskiy). I don't know whether Diachkov will stay in Novosibirsk for the Champions League next season, but I personally like him and think he can develop more if given the chance to play in a better team, moving to Novosibirsk is definitely a step up! Meanwhile, I really don't know what is happening in Belgorod, I just can't imagine them playing like this after the good start of the season.

I heard some rumors about internal problems in Belgorod  also financial situation isn't good ;)

Hmm.. Internal problems sounds more possible because there are many clubs in Europe right now with financial difficulties and they still perform well enough.. Would be a pity if only the lack of money causes players to underperform!

Zenit KAZAN lost the five-set home clash against Dinamo MOSCOW in round 19 of the Russian men’s Superleague but the Tatars are nevertheless still topping the standings of the regular season. Dinamo’s internationals made a major contribution to this win with Brazilian Dante scoring 21 points and Hungarian Peter Veres adding 23 to the final count.
After beating the strong sides of Lokomotiv NOVOSIBIRSK and Dinamo MOSCOW in the last two rounds, Fakel NOVY URENGOY stretched their winning streak to 8 consecutive games by defeating Iskra ODINTSOVO. The Siberian team scored 8 wins out of 10 matches after they signed a new head coach – Igor Chutchev. Lokomotiv BELGOROD beat the outsider Kuzbass KEMEROVO who had just dismissed their mentor Pavel Borsh.
In spite of the fact that Yaroslavich YAROSLAVL suffered their third consecutive defeat in the game against Gazprom-Ugra SURGUT, their leader Semen Poltavsky keeps heading the top-scorers chart with 370 points. Ural UFA joined the struggle for the Playoffs zone after winning the away game against Dinamo-Yantar KALININGRAD who stays at the bottom of the standings.
Dmitry Shcherbinin of Dinamo MOSCOW was the best blocker of the round with 10 points, and Clayton Stanley served 5 aces to claim the honor of the best server.

  • Iskra ODINTSOVO left Zenit KAZAN behind in the final standings of the Russian Superleague as they beat Gazprom-Ugra SURGUT at home in the last round of the regular season. Lokomotiv BELGOROD who didn’t have any chance to move up from their provisional sixth place also had given a chance to their young players to show their worth in the game against Yaroslavich YAROSLAVL. Dinamo KRASNODAR wrested the last ticket for the Playoffs from Ural UFA by beating them in straight sets.
With 433 points Semen Poltavsky, who is playing for Yaroslavich YAROSLAVL, won the title of the best scorer of the regular season. Strange results. Zenit and Iskra lost at home, Novosibirsk are almost out, and they had such a magnificent regular season.

  • Not all the results are surprising. Now that you think about it, it's extremely possible that Belgorod just slowed down the pace in the last rounds of the regular season to avoid Dinamo Moscow in the quarterfinals. Of course, I cannot be sure of that, but theoretically it's possible, besides, they earned some extra time to rest before the play-offs, unlike Zenit and Dinamo, so I'd call their two wins in Novosibirsk an inspiration, because they were in good shape at the beginning of the season too, so it was about time they showed some good volleyball again. To be honest, I also expected maybe just one, but still.. On the other side, the defeats of Iskra and Zenit in the second games are the only surprises. No reasonable explanation about what happened in Odintsovo. It's the first game of Mikhaylov I've ever seen in which he scores less than 10 points, so practically without him and maybe a tired Zenit after CL F4 this is more acceptable (2-0 to 2-3). Still, they were playing against Khamuttskikh and Poltavskiy.

    Next games tomorrow.

  • I cannot believe in the results.
I hope Kazan and Odintsovo will wake up tomorrow.
Who plays in Yaroslavl? Any big Stars?

  • The best team after regular season lost quaterfinals.

    What a tiebreak :cheesy:

  • I've watched Krasnodar - Iskra, great match  Iskra had enough chances to win match but crucial moment in match IMO was when Schops got blocked at 11-12 for Iskra . If he did use that ball ( it was 1 on 1 attack) match would be over. Krasnodar fought with passion and they deserved to win. Krasnodar didn't risk on serve at all, used quite easy serves so it was very surprised to see Samica struggling on reception. :aww: Also Santili made mistake with Abramov in starting six because he was substitute almost entire championship so when Spiridonov entered (monster serves from this guy :obey: ) Iskra looked like leading team after regular part of the season.

MVP for me is Cleber, I think he had 100% attack in 5th set and destroyed Iskra no matter he spiked from first or second line :obey: despite Krasnodar fought brave Iskra should won this match, they had great season so far, finally they looked like serious championship contender.. Schops was awful in 5th set, attack efficiency 1/7 or something like that and he is main culprit for this loss along Santili who made big mistake by putting Abramov in first lineup.

As I said Iskra looked seriously but they remained the loser team

Ural Ufa is probably relegated with todays loss vs Kuzbass Kemerovo :rolll: before season they said they can win the league with Stanley and Kromm as main players. These two are in tragic form lately, especially Stanley but Kromm is probably worst player in whole league on reception :gone:  along Zenit and Iskra, Ural have biggest budget in Russia, they don't have any financial problems and high place was imperative for them :teach: unfortunately reality is little bit different

P.S. Note two great players in Surgut, setter Kobzar (19 y.o) and MB Gutsalyuk... they're also in Russian roster for WL

  • Abramov isn't playing well again then?? Why does he always play bad when he plays in Russia? I think he should go back to Poland or Italy.

Thanks for the update, it's these kind of reports that make threads like these fun to read
