Cuban League 2011

  • Capitalinos and Orientales to meet in Cuban League finals
    The finals of Cuban National Volleyball League in both genders will see teams Capitalinos and Orientales meeting in best-of-three series at Kid Chocolate Hall in Havana starting on February 28.


    Both men’s teams arrive into the final phase with identical 12-3 win-loss mark, while Capitalinos’ women had an impressive unbeaten 12-0 record against a 5-7 balance by their rivals.


    Robertlandy Simon, captain of the national team, is the leader of defending champions Capitalinos where he is accompanied by internationals Rolando Cepeda and Raydel Hierrezuelo and a group of promising young players like Lazaro Fundora, Livan Osoria, Daniel Albo and Yulian Duran.


    Cuban sensation Wilfredo Leon tops an Orientales side composed by many of national team players like Fernando Hernandez, Osmany Camejo, Yoandry Diaz, Keibel Gutierrez and Henry Bell.

    Orientals defeated Capitals 3-1 (26-24, 20-25, 25-22, 25-18 ) to take the men's title. They had won the first match between the teams 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 29-27).


    The left-handed Hernandez was the top scorer of the men's competition with 210 points.

    2009 -> Capitalinos; In the final they defeated Serranos. Best players after preliminary round: attack - Roberlandy Simón 80,25% eff.; receive - Wilfredo León (75,95); block - Rolando Cepeda (47,02); setter - Raidel Hierrezuelo 10,28 pases excelentes por set; defence and libero - Gustavo Leyva.


    2007 -> Mambises; Led by Raidel Poey and Ariel Gil won game against Energetics 25-23, 25-22, 23-25, 25-22. The third place was for Farmers, the junior team in preparation for the World Championship, with a triumph over Selection 3-0 (25-22, 25-23 y 25-19). Pedro Iznaga was the MVP of the men’s division and the other members of the All-Star were: Raidel Poey (scorer), Darien Ferrer (attacker), Odelvis Dominico (blocker), Ariel Gil (server), Raidel Hierrezuelo (setter), Rolando Jurquin (receiver) and Keibel Gutierrez (defense and libero).


    2006 -> Havana; The Havana City team conquered the title of the Cuban Men’s National Championship, but not without a strong resistance from opponents of Villa Clara. The victory was in five close sets by score of 25-23, 23-25, 26-24, 21-25 and 15-11. The champions had difficulties with the reception and the serves but finally established their class as a team. Middle blocker Osmany Camejo was one of the main fixtures of the winners and was elected as the Most Valuable Player. Also Joan Llanes, Maikel Sanchez, Roberlandi Simon, Yoandry Diaz and Jesus Cruz standed out. Raidel Corrales, excelled for the Villa Clara side during the match played at Alejandro Urgelles Hall and nationally televised. In the match for the bronze medal, Camaguey defeated Santiago de Cuba in four sets by score of 28-26, 23-25, 25-20 and 25-22.


    2005 -> Havana; Havana Team is the champion of the Men’s Cuban League with a sweeping of Santiago de Cuba in the best-of-five series played at Kid Chocolate Pavilion in the capital of the country. Havana took the title with a victory of 25-27, 25-21, 25-18, 25-18 with the duo of Tomas Aldazabal (21) and Yasser Portuondo (13) as the top two offensive weapons. In the first match, Havana won in straight sets by score of 25-22, 25-14, 27-25 with Aldazabal and Portuondo scoring 14 and 13 respectively, while in the second meeting the eventual champions won by 25-18, 25-18, 23-25, 25-20 with Raydel Poey totalizing 24 points and Portuondo adding 10. Aldazabal deserved the honor as Most Valuable Player and Portuondo was the top attacker. Jorge Luis Gonzalez was elected the most outstanding in defense, reception and as libero while Javier Gonzalez was the best server. Yoandri Diaz of Santiago was the top setter. Walter Aguiar of Pinar del Rio, the top scorer and leading attacker during the three preliminary rounds, received a special mention.

  • This is excellent, didn't think I'd be able to watch this. It's strange that there is such a small audience and the atmosphere is so chill, even though the volleyball is so good. Just looks like a few guys playing volleyball, even though two maybe three of the worlds best players are on court.

    teams created especially for the occasion, there are official, or not,
