    10.12.2011 Generali Haching – Berlin Recycling Volleys 3:0 (28:26, 25:21, 25:20)

I had the luck to watch this game live yesterday. A great level of volleyball despite the fact that Berlin disappointed me again, I expect more from them this season. They were a match for Unterhaching only in the first and the last set. The moment that decided the winner was at the end of the first set when Berlin could have closed it and had the psychological advantage on their side after leading throughout the whole set, but they showed inexperience and it was a matter of minutes for the superb Haching to demolish them after that. Too bad for players like Kmet and Carroll who left Haching in direction Berlin only to gain some more money. I am saying that because there is no better explanation possible - Berlin is a weaker team, they don't play in the CL, they won't probably even reach the final in any of the domestic tournaments. Quite logical after they also dropped the match against VfB on Wednesday. Just a few words about their team - a promising young setter Shoji making his first international steps. The more experienced setter Skach didn't play at all, maybe it was a decision by the coach. Sivula was unstable at reception, frequently substituted by Sikiric, who didn't impress yesterday either.

On the other side, Unterhaching looks really great this year, totally crushing everyone on their way, who knows, maybe they are finally ready to take VfB over the title chase. In Europe they will have a decisive game at home against Poitiers in a decider for the second-best team in their pool, but this will also depend on how many stupid things Cuneo can do before the end of the group phase. Special words for Sebastian Pruesener and his work in defence. Now the chance he was given by Paduretu instead of Tille pays him back, an ex-OH turned into a libero is taller than the other guys on his position, but in his case he is also surprisingly fast and efficient, you have no idea what saves he made yesterday. Tille is a great libero, no questions about it, but with Pruesener Haching hasn't lost anything. Still it would be good for Tille to earn more playing time because it sucks to be the best libero at the WCH and to be without a club after that.

  • On Saturday the big clash between Friedrichshafen and Unterhaching took
place in Friedrichshafen. Unterhaching won with 16-14 in the fifth.
Friedrichshafen already led 10-6 and 14-12 and still managed to loose :white: Stats:http://live.volleyball-bundesliga.de/2011/Men/&1072.pdf

Kaliberda had its comeback after injury and due to Prueseners illness Hupka played libero for Haching.

Obviously it must have been a very entertaining match in front of a big
crowd (3600). Unfortunately there are no tv pictures. Its quite certain
now that Haching will go as leader into the play-offs. Friedrichshafen
looks much weaker than in recent years, but Moculescu is a cunning coach
and i don't write them off yet.

I still hope for Berlin to improve. Three good teams fighting for the title would be very good for the league and its marketing.

From his way of playing libero, you can see, that he used to play a lot of beach-vb on the german tour. He can improvise very well and has a great eye for the situation.

  • I appeciate these opinions.
I would like o add some additional info.

    [...]
Friedrichshafen looks much weaker than in recent years, but Moculescu is a cunning coach and i don't write them off yet ...

They are in fact weaker than in the last years.
I cannot see how this team will improve dramatically but on the transfer market.
But it is rumored that they cannot afford that many high class players this year.

    [...]
I still hope for Berlin to improve. Three good teams fighting for the title would be very good for the league and its marketing.

A strong Berlin team would be very good for the league. At the moment they have 13 good players, but no team.
This team can't win while having four OH of which three can't pass and one can't hit. :wall:
They aleady tried to correct this by terminating Bengolea's contract and re-engaging Scott Touzinsky, whose season in Puerto Rico is over.

Pruesener was hired by Unterhaching as a replacement for Tille, who ended his contract and wanted to change to Italy.
Tille did not find a club until the beginning of November. Now he has a contract in Séte.
BTW: It's a shame that Pruesener was not nominated for the NT.

Unterhaching is the clear favourite for champion if they manage to keep their pace for the playoffs and not be exhausted like last year.

    Bump, set, kill.

  • Another victory for Unterhaching today, the victim was evivo Dueren, but I guess Haching should have finished the game quicker to save some energy for the Wednesday's visit to Cuneo. Or even maybe Paduretu should have given some rest to key players today, he used all the starters till the very last points. Dueren had players missing due to injuries (thanks for the hint Michael :) ) - Elsner and Huebner, they only traveled with 10 guys. However, they deserve some nice words, even if Haching started the game a bit slowly and dropped the first set. If it wasn't for Christian Fromm and Matthias Boehme, Dueren would have never taken the opener and probably would have surrendered much more easily. They suffered another injury when Deimeke got replaced by Kracht, which reduced a lot their reception efficiency. That was the point when the game was more or less decided, Kracht couldn't handle the coming serves and Haching won three consecutive sets without Dueren reaching 20 points.

The main problem for the guests (apart from the missing players and the reception inadequacy at times) was the setter position. Both Krueger and Kocian have some talent, but are way too young to be starters in Dueren. Kocian had a nice first set, but after that had a lot of unaccurate passes, Krueger didn't do much better. Dueren have the league top scorer Boehme in their roster, but he just deserves a better setter to help Dueren get some more points.

The match was interesting, offered some great rallies, but I hope it didn't exhaust the Haching players too much, else they would have even more trouble in Cuneo.

  • A first mistake for the domestic season of Haching. In their own sports hall they were put under pressure by Berlin Recycling Volleys and registered their first defeat. A great peformance by Paul Carroll who was unstoppable throughout the whole three sets. I can't say what went wrong for Haching, they couldn't find their rhythm, following the home defeats in the last two CL games and this bitter 0-3 at home now they are facing their first psychological breakdown of the season. It comes before the visit to Novosibirsk and some weeks before the beginning of the play-offs. There is for sure a lot of exhaustion in the team, Paduretu does not rotate the squad too much, but they need to be back on shape soon and try not to fail at the semifinal step like last year. In the CL, on the other side, a killer trip to Novosibirsk and a must win to keep chances alive might be too much at the moment, but I guess they appreciate every additional game in Europe ;)

PS. I only watched highlights of this game on TV, couldn't go to Unterhaching this weekend, but I should be available for most of the play-off battles.

  • The semifinals in Germany are underway. No doubt there is more action between the 2nd and 3rd-ranked team after the regular season, namely VfB and Berlin Volleys. The guys from the capital tied up the series after winning 3-2 in their weekend home game and they did so without their main attacker - the opposite Paul Carroll. VfB is still a favourite in that semifinal mainly because they have home soil advantage. On the other side, this is the last chance for BRV to do something this year, however, they need a victory in Friedrichshafen, which is something only Haching has done through the current season.

In Unterhaching things are going as expected and the team seems to be only a win away from the final. I watched the first game of the series, there was a significant difference between the two sides and even if Moerser is a decent team, most of their experienced players are far away from they used to be. I am talking mainly about Michael Olieman whom I remember from his beat years with the Dutch NT in the European League. Now he is slower and definitely not as efficient as he once used to be. He had a good quarterfinal outburst helping his team overcome the surprise of the season TV Buhl, but he has been extremely quiet against Haching. Van Gendt is an experienced player, maybe the most quality signing for Moerser despite his 38 years, but the attackers around him made too many mistakes in Unterhaching. Overall, not a bad team, with some problems at position 4, but this semifinal and their 4th place in the regular season are definitely the best they can get this year. Haching will have at least some days more than the other finalist to prepare for the final.

  • Surprise, surprise! For the first time in 8 years there will be no Friedrichshafen in the final of the Bundesliga. Berlin RV made the huge upset in 2012 by eliminating the favourite and finally the money spent on players started paying off. These guys we've discussed several times already, they were a big question mark due to the potential and investments spent, but never showed anything remarkable during the season so far. Well, this I call remarkable! I don't know if the Cup taken by VfB grants them access to the Champ. League, normally it should.

The final series start tomorrow in Unterhaching. BRV won the last time they visited Haching by 3-0. However, I would refrain myself from predictions for two reasons - BRV are a mystery, I don't know how they will react now in a final game after an honestly mediocre season; Unterhaching have an enormous chance of finally winning the title, but their mentality might've been more prepared against VfB - their greatest rival in recent history. Now being the favourites against the surprise from Berlin, Haching will have psychological burden as well. Looking forward to the first game tomorrow :)

The series is tied at 2-2 at the moment after both teams took perfect advantage of their home games. The fifth and decisive game will be this Sunday afternoon, I had the chance to watch the previous two in Unterhaching, will be watching the last one as well and will make a summary over the weekend when we will know the name of the new German champion. There are more and more people coming to the small sports hall here, the atmosphere the last time was great, no doubt it will be interesting this weekend as well :)
