Germany - Volleyball Bundesliga (VBL) 2015/16

  • Season opening match live on http://www.vbl.tv :

Friday, 23.10.15, 19.30 CET United Volleys Rhein/Main vs. VfB Friedrichshafen

With the Bundesliga to start on Friday i still owe my point of view towards the teams behind Friedrichshafen and Berlin. I would rank them as follows:

    3. Düren
New coach Anton Brams is considered the "wunderkind" of german coaches. He is younger than some of his players and for sure has a very different approach to teaching volleyball than his predecessor Michael Mücke. I am especially curious on US setter Matt West, who is on wide roster of US NT. If he performs well, the team should come in third.

    4. Lüneburg
Best scorer of last season, Tijmen Laane, left the club but with the canadians Steven Marshall and Nic del Bianco (i heard already good things about him) they should have replaced him well. With young prospect Adam Kocian they improved the 2nd setter position as well. They look rather thin on the MB position (Kevorken, Schlien, Kruse) but their firepower and depth from the wings should make up for this.

    5. Rottenburg
They have a very balanced squad and seem to be eager to come in better than last year. They always used to start the season well but in the end they often ran out of steam. Most of the players are rather "semi" professional and are seriously studying or even working and for me, thats one reason why i rank them below Lüneburg and Düren who imo have a more "professional" attempt. I will have a special look on young german hopeful Moritz Karlitzek and how he performs in his new club.

    6. TSV Herrsching
Like "Bayer" already said they seriously improved their squad. Tille, Steuerwald, Ondrovic and Trenkler will add quality. But still, like in Rottenburg, most of the guys are "semi professionals" and lets see how they come together as a team and if they can keep up their "fun" with raised expectations.

    7. United Volleys RheinMain
Great project and i really hope they will do well. It is a good opportunity for guys like Jan Zimmermann and Moritz Reichert to show what they can.
if they perform well they can even reach a higher position.

    8. TV Ingersoll Bühl
They had a real bad season last year but still they have a very good MB-Duo with Mote/Mayaula. Like Matt West from Düren, the new setter Graham Mcilvaine was part of the B-squad of US NT. A lot will depend on improvement of young austrian opposite Paul Buchegger and how the OHs will deliver on reception. If the MBs can be used, they are a dangerous team and even can perform better.

    9./10./11. Coburg/Grub, CV Mitteldeutschland, Netzhoppers
Iwould give Coburg/Grub the best chances for a surprise. They added former Bühl players Mauler and Kostolani to their squad and if everything goes well they might even avoid the pre-play-offs.

Imo,especially places 5-8 are very "open" and i am not very sure if I got them really right. But as i already said the overall quality should have improved compared to last year and i am really looking forward to the new season :super:

  • I see Ariel Katzenelson in Coburg, quite solid Israeli NT setter with some experience. Also Hrinak on OH position

Itamar Stein was their opposite last year and now that he has retired and taken over the head coach's position, he must've used the opportunity to recruit another Israeli.

  • Tell me, is there any talentend youngster who you suggest me to follow during this season? Any young guy who can play in Italian league (or Polish one etc.) since next year?

Do you mean local German players only? Or any talents in general? Perhaps such that have not appeared in Italy yet?

As Tim said, Moritz Karlitzek (Rottenburg, universal, 191 cm, 19-year-old) is a name to start with. I paid attention to his skills in Volleycountry's talents section. Others might be Tom Strohbach (Rottenburg, NT player, OH, 196 cm, 23-year-old), Philipp Jankowski (Rottenburg, setter, 192 cm, 24-year-old), Moritz Reichert (United Volleys Rhein-Main, OH, 195 cm, 20-year-old), Tobias Krick (United Volleys Rhein-Main, MB, 210 cm, 17-year-old), Stefan Thiel (United Volleys Rhein-Main, setter, 185 cm, 18-year-old), Robert Adrian Aciobanitei (Romanian, also on Volleycountry's talents section, Friedrichshafen, OH, 195 cm, 18-year-old), Michal Finger (Czech NT, Friedrichshafen, opposite, 202 cm, 22-year-old), Jakob Gunthor (Friedrichshafen, universal, 212 cm, 20-year-old), Luke Perry (Australian NT, Friedrichshafen, libero, 180 cm, 19-year-old), Paul Buchegger (Austrian, TV Buhl, opposite, 204 cm, 19-year-old), David Sossenheimer (TV Buhl, OH, 193 cm, 19-year-old), Peter Ondrovic (Slovakian NT, Herrsching, MB, 200 cm, 20-year-old), Adam Kocian (Luneburg, setter, 192 cm, 20-year-old), Yannik Porner (Luneburg, opposite, 201 cm, 21-year-old).

We will see who of these can develop well and who of the other newcomers/youngsters will show his best volleyball.

Anyone, nationality doesn't matter. Exactly, any young boy who most of us don't know yet but who can be become, during this season, a good stuff for the future

Thanks for the answer Yavor

Thanks for the answer Yavor

I wanna see how Jan Klobucar (slovenian OH, 23 years old) will play in Germany. He doesn't have so many opportunities in NT this year, so i wanna know if he is good or not.

I hope Tom Strohbach to play in Italy next season. I liked him against Netherlands in this ECh.

  • This time, we will have a lot of canadians and US Boys in the league, who make their first appearance on bigger professional stage. I mentioned already Düren's setter Matt West and Bühls setter Graham McIlvaine.

There are others like Lüneburgs Nic DelBianco (CAN), Dürens Brook Sedore (CAN) or Bühls Peter Russell (USA) who might have their "breakthrough".

Yes, I would follow Klobucar as well. Thanks for reminding me!

I watched him several times, quite solid techinque and ability. Probably Stein was connection :)

Regarding Klobučar.. I wouldnt consider him as a player to follow because he is well-know and should make difference for his team. CL experience is important and I see him as a player who must make difference on field.

    :teach:
I hope that the United Volleys can give some resistance today. The match will be well attended and a good match would be a great advertisement for the rest of the season. They have a big hall to fill in Frankfurt (5000 places)

Bad news of the day is that Simon Tischer, once again, picked up an injury (back). According to the moderator in the beginning of match, it could be rather serious. Björn Andrae, after a knee surgery, will probably be ready to play towards the end of the year. Like yesterday, they might somehow get the job done in Bundesliga but i fear that they will get tough beatings in Champions League.

The most interesting match probably takes place in Lüneburg. On their first match in Herrsching, Lüneburg especially failed on serve/reception. Hübner has 4 good OHs (Marshall, delBianco, Marks, Bahlburg) and finding the right selection here, which can deliver a good balance between reception and attack, will be crucial.

  • Lüneburg is still playing in that small hall ?

    Yes, they do.
Like Herrsching, they have a special permit by the VBL board, but it will run out after this season. As far as i can judge, there are not many positive signs that a new hall in Lüneburg will be built. In short or mid-term, that would mean the end of professional volleyball in Lüneburg, as the VBL promised to be very strict in applying their regulations.

Still early but one might already say that Lüneburg, once again, did a very good job with their signings. Nick delBianco looks like a great reinforcement and Adam Kocian seems to be ready to be a starting setter. Steven Marshall had a good match in Rottenburg too.

United Volleys had a great start to the season as well. At the moment, they seem to be a bit overly dependant on christian Dünness but if they work on being more versatile, they will surely play a good season.

On the very top, Berlin looks good but they haven't been challenged too much yet. I am not convinced by Friedrichshafen. They just lost so much quality compared to last year and there is still a "hell of work" to do for Moculescu if they really want to challenge Berlin.

  • Games this weekend:

    Saturday:
    19.00 Herrsching vs. Düren
    19.30 CV Mitteldeutschland vs. Coburg/Grub
    20.00 Lüneburg vs. United Volleys
    20.00 Bühl vs. Rottenburg

    Sunday:
14.00 VfB Friedrichshafen vs. BR Volleys

All matches will be streamed on http://www.vbl.tv

First clash this season between VfB and BR Volleys. Maybe Berlin has a little advantage, as they played their CL-match at home. Generally i would rate them higher than Friedrichshafen this year but they weren't overly convincing in the Championsleague against Izmir as well. So lets see what will happen.

Friedrichshafen is currently presenting some promotion vids which says that they will play in pink jerseys as long as they don't manage to sell out their arena. I fear they will have to play in pink for a while 8)
