  • There are talks of banning ALL Russian athletes in Rio (so that means including volleyball) due to the doping mess right now. Is there any truth to this rumor? I really feel this is a political move against Russia more than anything else.

Well, it seems that IOC just voted the exclusion of the russian delegation for athletics, I have no idea for the other sports but I doubt all russian athletes would be banned

only tracks & fields. volleyball probably not affected.
but even that ban, IOC might overturn it. so we'll have to wait and see.
as for it being political, i don't know. it comes down to whether you believe there's truth to russian state sponsored cheating.
if it's true, then i would say the ban is fair enough.

  • What's the deadline to submit the Rio OG's 12-player list?

Read somewhere someone just said by June 24, 2016 but I think it's still rather early for such deadline.

I don't know specifically about OG but generally for FIVB tournaments teams should send a wider list 1 or 1.5 month before, composed of 18 players or 21 players. maybe that date is for this. Final roster usually will be announced 24 hours before the tournament.

Is such wider list (wide roster) equivalent to the twelve player names to participate in the OG?

By today it's 44 days left from the OG kick-off time - https://www.rio2016.com/en

well, prior to Olympic Games (as far as I know from previous editions: Beijing in London) there were wider rosters like arman wrote and they were presented in Media Guides, so let's expect them first and then we will probably receive infos about 12 from each country ^^ I jut found these guides and in Beijing it could be max 19 players while in London max 20 :wavy:

Thanks for your info. The KEY point, there's still some time (though dunno how long it's) for each team to decide the final 12 names. It's pretty easy to submit the wide roster at once, be it 19 or 20; however, some teams may take longer time in determining their final lists.

Brazil NTs normally decide their last one or two players after they are already in the Olympic Village.

  • I've checked Olympic volleyball guide PDF. Deadline for registering players (probably the wide list) is July 18th.

  • Wide roster of OG has been posted on five website

Very interesting, Rondon , Lo Bianco are on the list of Italian team

Lo Bianco is back to the NT

  • another interesting name is Fabi on the Brazilian list (#20), but we know that she's just to fill the list in ^^

  • so far we know only rosters of Korea and Japan, in any other case we still can only guess, let's check overview:

    Pool A:

    Argentina:
    S: Y.Castiglione, Sagardia
    OP: Fresco, Boscacci
OH: Piccolo, Fernandez, Nizetich, Acosta, Martinez Franchi (defensive specialist)
    MB: Sosa, Lazcano, Busquets
    L: Rizzo

If Nizetich comes back, then one of Acosta/Martinez Franchi will be probably out, I didn't mention Carla Castiglione (OP/OH), but I think she has no chances

    Brazil:
    S: Dani Lins, Roberta, Fabiola
    OP: Sheilla, Tandara
OH: Natalia, Fe Garay, Gabi, Jaqueline
    MB: Thaisa, Fabiana, Juciely, Adenizia
    L: Camila Brait, Leia

3 to cut, definitely Adenizia, looking at international experience Roberta and Leia would be out, but battles for backup S and L are still open

    Russia:
    S: Pankova, Startseva, Babeshina
    OP: Goncharova, Malykh, Malygina
    OH: Kosheleva, Shcherban, Ilchenko
    MB: Zaryazhko, Fetisova, Lyubushkina, Shlyakhovaya
    L: Malova, Ezhova

some solutions possible, Ezhova definitely out, then 1 of Lyubushkina/Shlyakhovaya (I'd prefer Shlyakhovaya to go to Rio) and either Startseva/Babeshina or Malykh/Malygina can be out (maybe Babeshina ?( ) 3 S is too much, but Marichev makes weird choices and then Malykh can be out

    Pool B:

    China:
    S: X.Ding, J.Shen, Q.Wei
    OP: C.Zeng, F.Yang, X.Gong
    OH: T.Zhu, C.Zhang, R.Hui, X.Liu, Y.Liu
    MB: Y.Xu, X.Yuan, N.Yan, J.Yang
    L: L.Li, Z.Chen

probably 7 which won't play in Final Six are safe (Ding, Gong, Zhu, Zhang, Yan, Yuan, Li) and rest will fight for spots in Thailand :wavy: Chen can be out unless she becomes defensive specialist, then both Xiaotong and Yanhan Liu will be out :wavy: I worry that Wei is out as well, but maybe she will have chance to show her skills soon  I don't think that Junjing Yang is ready after injury, so MBs are clear ^^ there is also option that 3 OPs will go to Brazil (Zeng still can receive ^^ )

    Italy:
    S: Lo Bianco, Orro, Malinov
    OP: Centoni, Diouf
OH: Ortolani, Egonu, Sylla, Del Core, Spirito (serve and defensive specialist), Guerra, Gennari
    MB: Chirichella, Guiggi, Danesi
    L: De Gennaro, Sirressi

Malinov probably out, Gennari as well (injured), Guerra probably out too, and the last is to choose if they prefer option with defense or keep another backup hitter, so last spots are probably for Diouf/Centoni (1 or both) or Spirito/Sirressi (1 or none) - probably 2 out of 4 won't play in Brazil

    Netherlands:
    S: Dijkema, Stoltenborg
    OP: Sloetjes
OH: Buijs, Balkestein-Grothues, Plak (also OP), Pietersen (also OP), Schoot (defensive specialist)
    MB: Belien, De Kruijf, Steenbergen
    L: Stam-Pilon

here everything looks clear, any other solution will be surprise, Knip and Koolhaas wil be out without bigger doubts

    Puerto Rico:
    S: Mojica, Valentin
    OP: Ocasio, Ferrer, Prieto-Cerame
    OH: Cruz, Enright, Rosa, Santana
    MB: Oquendo, Reyes, Rosa
    L: Seilhamer, Venegas

first is easy to cut, it will be Prieto who almost didn't play, it's harder to choose second player, it'll be one out of Ferrer/Santana/Seilhamer/Venegas - it's still hard to choose because the same 14 is playing in Pan-Am Cup now,it depends if they prefer to have defensive specialist (then Ferrer or Santana is out) or only 1 L (then Seilhamer can leave)

    Serbia:
    S: Ognjenovic, Zivkovic
    OP: Boskovic, Brakocevic, Malagurski
OH: Mihajlovic, Malesevic, Nikolic, Busa, Djerisilo
    MB: Rasic, Veljkovic, Stevanovic, M.Popovic
    L: S.Popovic, Cebic

Malagurski is out, Mina Popovic as well, probably Cebic as well and the last one is Djerisilo/Busa, I worry that Djerisilo will stay on bench in Brazil instead of Busa :S

    USA:
    S: Glass, Lloyd, Thompson
    OP: Lowe, Fawcett, Murphy
    OH: Robinson, Hill, Larson-Burbach, Easy
MB: Adams, Dietzen, Akinradewo, Crimes, Dixon
    L: Banwarth, Hagglund

IMHO Hagglund is out, Dixon won't be ready, Crimes is too weak, Thompson is only in for serve what is not enough having 3 S (like Babeshina in Russia) and the last one to cut is OP, I prefer Lowe to be out, but she's getting many chances and plays nothing special  better to have two different OPS, so Fawcett should go with 1 another

don't guess what's with Cameroon, don't know those players...

any suggestions, forecasts, news regarding each team ?(

Edited once, last by kondzio ().

  • From what I heard, Tandara is the one on the edge and could be cut.....Natalia would be a back up for Sheila if needed.

I think Djerisilo is out already, once she played only the first week, and Busa has been playing good..

Also world of volleyball said that Orro wont recover in time and she`s out, that`s why Lo Bianco is back.

  • I think there is no way to guess all of that about Brazil so far.
Both Adenizia and Juciely might be in the OGs, if Tandara gets cut (Natália would be backup OPP)...or two liberos might go (this almost happened in London, but Camila Brait was cut in the last minute).
I think final six will give better perspective of what might happen.
    The only guaranteed spots are:

    S: Dani Lins
    MB: Fabiana, Thaísa
OHs: Jaqueline, Fe Garay, Gabi, Natália (also OPP)
    OPP: Sheilla
    L:

Yes. I wrote the same before I read you. I agree with this situation. I think it might happen.
