Montreux Volley Masters 2017 - 6-11.06.2017

  • Winning two sets already guarantee BRA to advance into SF... it looks like BRA just needs 5 points (equals to POL) to move forward. Wonder if BRA wanna give chance to those bench players a true drill while rest Natalia and other core for SF :-) let see...

Brazil needs to win. The first criterion is number of victories.

Yeah, I forgot that earlier :)

Interestingly, the last year's runner-up, THA team, is going home bagging three losses in group match, all in 1-3, fielding the team of relative same strength as last year. It can only mean that other participants in the same group are stronger today than in the 2016.

Well, since ARG will top the group (just don't see how SUI can be the hindrance there), thus the semifinals will play GER vs ARG and BRA vs CHN.

  • Thailand had Tomkom last year so it's a different team when your best setter is not playing.

Or maybe Poland and Germany decided to bring their first teams rather than their second teams?

I honestly believe Tomkom is overrated. Even Pornpun had to substitute for her last year.

Favorite players: M: Maxim Mikhaylov, Murilo, Serginho, Aaron Russell, Otavio, Simone Giannelli, Ivan Zaytsev, Tsvetan Sokolov, Michał Kubiak, Mariusz Wlazly, Pawel Zagummy W: Sheilla, Zhu Ting, Natalia, Fe Garay, Fofao, Gabi, Thaisa, Foluke Akinradewo, Wei Qiuyue, Ding Xia, Carli Lloyd, Fabi, Natalia Goncharova, Yuko Sano, Saoris Kimura and Sakoda

They did win their matches last year because Tomkom was subbed in replacing Porpun. Porpun started all the matches and only won against Switzerland without Tomkom. Tomkom couldnt help Thailand against China in the final though.

I didn't mean Montreux. WOQT. Which was Thailand's most important tournament last year.

  • People shouldn't expect any superstar in Montreux tournament. This competition is more a baptism of fire for the NT newcomers or for assessing the recovery of injured players, that's all

  • I guess this tournement isn't only for teams to play with a younger squad to prove themselves, it's also for refeeres to prove themselves on an international level before being refeeres in important matches

Ha ha ha... funny but can be quite true. No wonder those referees had bad calls repeatedly, and are not the familiar faces, have never seen them in WGP, WC or other important matches. Then it may explain why the Challenge System is not used here, can one imagine if the referees' many bad calls are caught red-handed over and over

Schedule for semifinals: A1 OR B1 vs B2 OR A2... 10.06.17 18:30 and 21:00 (LOCAL), still not clear which match plays first

The semifinals will stage interesting matches: the very first reunion between the two giants post-Rio OG, CHN - BRA plus two nearly full-house teams of the rising second liners: ARG - GER.

I wonder whether the ARG team is the second or third strongest (competing with DOM) in the Latin America nowadays after the eclipse of the CUB?

“There are decades where nothing happens; and there are weeks where decades happen.”

  • Strongest teams from AMERICA, Brazil,USA,DOM, Puerto Rico, Argentina,Cuba.

But remember Argentina is South America, they compete against Brasil.
Dominican Rep. is Norceca, they compete against, USA, Puerto Rico and Cuba.

Thanks for clarifying the South America and Norceca teams and their strength... I'd mixed up the two.

    From Laola1.tv, the SF1: ARG-GER 10.06.17 18:30 and SF2: BRA-CHN 21:00 CEST (UTC+2H)... again need to stay awake till the dawn in Asia :P

Rosamaria Montibeller (shirt 07, born 1994, 185 cm, wing spiker) is cute!

You won't see the men's players pose like this... that's why I like women's VB :-) lol

  • And the Chinese team, just cannot locate the MontreuxMasters' tweet on the team or its pic, so here it's taken from team's webpage ;)

Here's a low-key team picture of the Chinese squad at the 2017 Montreux Volley Masters

  • Laola's commentator is once again very "creative" with names

Yesterday we had "Smart-sek" and "Mend-er-tsik", now we have "A-cha-cha-raporn" (which admittedly is not easy to pronounce, but I wonder where he found the extra "cha").

Oh and "Cool-house" is quite interesting too :D

  • I'm quite satisfied the way this Dutch team has improved during this week.

Jasper: I really didn't know her..she has played for VC Sneek in our domestic league.. She could become a decent defensive OH..

Daalderop: I remember her first game for Aachen...since then, she has improved her reception a lot. In attack she needs to become more versatile..to swing her arm in different directions..since she is too predicatble.

Plak: the same as Daalderop: she has improved a lot in reception (and also defense). Also the fact Novara has extended her contract is a sign of her improvement.

The big problem is at MB-position: Koolhaas is as horrible as 5 years ago...Stoeten is already 25 and I can;t imagine her to reach Beliën's level ever.. The only one I have hope for is Polder..since she improved already since the start of this tournament and she is only 19 years old.
