Germany - VBL 1. Bundesliga 2016/17

  • Stuttgart - Vilsbiburg 3:0 (21, 22, 16)
    http://live.volleyball-bundesliga.de/2016-17/Women/&2012.pdf
MVP: Valerie Nichol / Keao Burdine

Stuttgart continues to impress, once again Sandor and Mlejnkova did an amazing job as OHs and all other players did their job to support them well.

Sound counter tactics by Vilsbiburg made it more difficult in the first two sets, but Stuttgarts attack power was indeed too much for Vilsbiburg. Hosts were superior also in service, blocking and reception.

  • Due to the injuries, Dresden adds three 16 year old players from their talent team to the 1st league roster: MB Camilla Weitzel, OH Elena Kömmling and OPP Rica Maase. The latter will travel to Münster with the team on Sunday as backup attacker.

  • Erfurt - VCO Berlin 2:3 (25:20 25:18 25:27 15:25 15:17) :white:

MVP: Selma Hetmann / Aisha Skinner

    Suhl - Aachen 0:3 (23:25 17:25 18:25)
    http://live.volleyball-bundesliga.de/2016-17/Women/&2011.pdf (soon)
MVP: Veronika Hroncekova / Nika Daalderop

    Schwerin - Köpenick 3:1 (25:16 16:25 25:16 25:13)
    http://live.volleyball-bundesliga.de/2016-17/Women/&2008.pdf
MVP: Lauren Barfield / Marie Holstein

  • Surprises today (not as big as in the mens composition, but anyway): newbies of Erfurt one the first two sets against VCO Berlin education team clearly as expected, but lost the third after a close race with 25:27, and than lost all: even the tie-break. After their surprise win against Aachen this has to be considered as major drawback. On the other hand their Thuringia rivals of Suhl lost also, in three against Aachen, so nothing is set regarding first leage membership at all.

Schwerin won only in four sets against Köpenick, while they won firt, third and forth clearly, they lost composition in the second completely and lost that one also clearly.

  • Münster - Dresden 2:3 (22:25 25:23 25:17 21:25 14:16)
    http://live.volleyball-bundesliga.de/2016-17/Women/&2009.pdf
MVP: Juliane Langgemach / Mareen Apitz
Münster had a big chance to make the surprise but couldn't finish it. I wonder what Juliane Langgemach did except for being an ex-Dresden player to get MVP despite 4/21 in attack

    Potsdam - Wiesbaden 3:2 (23:25 25:20 25:23 23:25 15:11)
    http://live.volleyball-bundesliga.de/2016-17/Women/&2013.pdf
MVP: Marta Drpa / Simona Kosova
Very entertaining match, both teams defended a lot. Both setters were very good in the beginning of the match but both got a bit too predictable in the long run, especially Irina Kemmsies :S Potsdam won tie-break from 4:8 behind.

    Suhl - VCO Berlin 3:0 (25:14 25:18 25:19)
    http://live.volleyball-bundesliga.de/2016-17/Women/&2014.pdf (soon)
MVP: Claudia Steger / Vanessa Agbortabi

  • SCP win 3:2 against VCW.
    DSC wins 3:2 in Münster

Strumoli with 12(!) errors in reception.

Munster had 171 attacks vs. 149 for Dresden, which tells you that Munster did a much better job receiving, digging, and passing than Dresden. Strumilo's 12 errors are a large part of that, but one must remember that if not for injuries, she would not even be playing. IMHO, until Dresden gets some help at the wing spiker / reception position, they will be nothing more than an average team in an average league, and will be hard-pressed to win on the road. Like today.

It is even worse: if Dresden can't resolve it's issues in composition and shape rather quickly (what seems unlikely), Schwerin will easily destroy them on Saturday in their Margon hall IMHO. Not to speak about DVV cup at the same location a few days later against Stuttgart.

Dominika Strumilo is a good perspective player for the future, I think, but despite she came from Asterix Kieldrecht, she just turns 20 at the end of this year and obviously still needs time to adapt to the level of Bundesliga, which is considerable higher as Belgiums Eredivision.

  • I still miss last years' stats section on the VBL site. Haven't they renewed the contract with "Oppia"? ?(
That would be really sad, as i very much enjoyed playing around with team and individual stats.....

This makes the first championship win of Stuttgart more difficult, but the 10 times champion Schwerin will be a serious and valuable opponent in the playoffs anyway...

  • Dresden brings in Mancuso to help . . . temporarily: https://www.tag24.de/nachricht…pflichtung-angriff-178017

So far I know there is no connection between Apitz and Mancuso so far - but both are experienced players, they may establish it in a few days, if possible. If not, value of Mancuso will be limited without setters she is used to.

  • During a celebration for their supercup win in Berlin in city hall Stuttgart I talked to manager Irion: it looks good for new sponsors for Allianz MTV Stuttgart, but final signatures take time also due to juristic procedures. By the way, Dresden has also not yet celebrated sponsorship agreement with ENTIRETEC opposed to the date mentioned by Dresdner Morgenpost newspaper due to a leak (was 31. October).

I guess my question is, if, as it seems, Dresden's biggest challenge is in receiving and passing, does the return of Mancuso actually address that issue?

  • Schedule for Saturday:

    5. November 2016
    14:30 Dresden - Schwerin
    18:00 Suhl - Erfurt
    19:00 Köpenick - Potsdam
    19:00 Aachen - Stuttgart
    19:00 Wiesbaden - Münster

All matches live on http://www.vbl.tv as 1 camera stream and the big match Dresden-Schwerin will be as TV production on http://www.mdr.de
It's "el clasico" of German league of the last seasons and even if Dresden doesn't seem so strong this year, they'll be highly motivated for sure and I hope for a good match.

  • Especially for Dresden this will be "Stunde der Wahrheit" (like time, when some truth is revealed) against Schwerin, because the last seemed stronger at last and due to DVV Maren Brinker is already eligible to play for Schwerin.
