Germany - VBL 1. Bundesliga 2016/17

  • Regarding Potsdam: the question is, if the mixture of players is right - having so many German players in the roster threatens this mixture potentially, good to observe last season.

Why should nationality have to do something with it? It always depends on the individual character of the players and staff how the team works as a group...

Vilsbiburg complete their roster with 2nd L Isabelle Liebchen. It means that Liana Mesa is their only OPP :white: I expect Lena Stigrot to play as OPP if necessary then, because Mesa with 38 years is not going to survive a whole season as starter in every match.

Mesa rocks.... every year she gets less credit and still teaches all the young ones lessions :teach: It's risky though...

  • :what:
Following this argumentation, Schwerin should be having trouble too.

Not necessarily: if the players are carefully selected, it can work out of course. And this was better solved in Schwerin than in Potsdam last season, we have indeed to wait, how the chemistry between players is the season coming.

You are right, therefore I need to explain more carefully: the German clubs are in the uncomfortable situation, that only a rather limited number of German players fitting into a good team are available. If a club concentrates now to engage many German professionals, they have not many options to construct a strong and fitting roster. This is mainly due to the low number of good German professionals... therefore an education and conditions issue, not one of nationality directly.

What a weird line of thought. Are you trying to say Stuttgart with almost all foreign players will definitely click as a team and play a good season? Maybe you should tell us more about what happened in Potsdam last season for us to be able to understand your line of thought.

This came from a statement of Potsdams well-known Italian coach Alberto Salomoni: he criticized the composition of the SC Potsdam squad exactly that way. We were all wondering, why Potsdam didn't perform better in last season, because the single players were all good enough for more success. But he explained, that too many German players were hired and it was therefore not possible, to balance the team well on all positions, he would have needed one or two more foreigners to do this job. But this was a management decision and one of the reasons, he left Potsdam. Maybe I can find this interview again, if you are interested, or it was cited already in another thread? I was also surprised by his statement, but after all, this made sense.

And no, it would not harm Stuttgarts roster to have a few more German players - this is more about financial capability. For example Lisa Thomsen was just too expensive as National team libera for this complete season, so it was decided to get Wanna Buakaew (Thailand) and (not Hanna Orthmann) Julia Schäfer instead, at least one German, which makes two overall (like last season).

Orthmann is not in Stuttgart !!!
