  • I don't know why Cuba won't take part of this tournament. If I am not mistaken, they have finished the Pan-Am Cup last year in the 11th position. Probably their bad result in the previous year has obliged them to play a qualification tournament and they might have failed in qualifying for this competition. They might have used their B or C team. This is my guess.

The teams from America in the 2009 edition of the WGP will be Brazil, USA, Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. I believe these four teams will qualify for next year's WGP again.

  • From official site Pan-American:

USA Volleyball is hosting its first-ever Women’s Pan American Cup,
which serves as a qualifying event into the 2010 FIVB World Grand Prix.
The event, which will tentatively have three of the four semifinalists
from the 2008 Olympic Games, is the largest international volleyball
event hosted by USA Volleyball in terms of country participation.
Brazil won the 2008 Olympic Games gold medal by defeating silver
medalist USA in the title match, while three-time Olympic Games gold
medalist Cuba finished fourth in the 2008 Olympic Games. All three
teams are currently ranked in the top four in the current FIVB World
    Rankings.

  • USA volleyball web site is out of date.

Cuba and Venezuela, teams that were originally scheduled to play in this tournament, decided to withdrawal, and there is not official statement about the reason for this decision.

I think this is just a political situacion, because we al know the anti-american policy from the governments of Cuba and Venezuela. It is just my personal opinion.

It's a pity that this happens because , Cuba will not play in this tournament and therefore not being able to qualify for the 2010 World Grand Prix.

  • I don't think it has to do with politics. Maybe they're just too tired for another tournament or they don't have funds for the 2009 Pan Am and/or the 2010 Grand Prix. I reckon they'd rather stay home. I think it's going to be a bad mistake skipping the Grand Prix next year. Not when they need tournament experience more than ever. Most of the players are new to the 1st 6 spots, except for Carillo, and Santos.

it is ALL politics... Cuban sportsmen usually dont participate in the tournaments on US soil, the risk of Cubans running away is extremely high there..

  • Argentina almost upset the whole world last night with an excellent performance in the first two sets.

The first Argentina was ahead 24-22, but they let brazilians to recover and win 26-24.
Then the second set Argentina built a fair advantage of 4-5 points, and could hold the pressure from the Olympic champions.
The third and fourth sets, the brazilian block worked almost perfectly to help them win the game.

    the game statistics here: http://assets.teamusa.org/asse…787/062809BRAARGStats.pdf

About Argentina, they are building a very interesting and young team that may be a nice surprise in the few next years.

Last year in the VII Panam Cup they reach the third place, and was the only team to beat the Dominicans wich at the end ended up being the champions.

Then in the Final four tournament played in Brazil (Brazil, Cuba, Dominican Rep, and Argentina), Argentina upset the cuban team 3-1 in the game for the third place.

The real goal for Argentinians this year is to qualify for the WCH2010. The tournament will be held in Brazil in four weeks. Only two spots were given to South America.

  • Bethania Dela Cruz

Bethania Dela Cruz :this woman is a miracle. She should be recorded in history for few who can be credited as a heroine to the victory over Brazil.

Back to statistics it seems that Brazil's loss could be partly due to Fabiana's low score and where carol gattaz was? :what:
