  • Baotou, China, July 3, 2010 – Iran beat France while Germany
    rallied past China in the finals of the boys and girls 2010 World
    Schools Volleyball Championships here on Saturday, which was held from
    June 27 to July 3.


    In the girls final, the German spikers, coming from a sports
    school in Berlin, successfully repeated its trophy winning feat four
    years ago with a 3-1 (21-25, 25-21, 25-22 and 25-20) win.


    Coming off a straight sets victory over Turkey in Friday's
    semifinals, China, represented by a team from Baotou No.1 middle school
    making its debut at this biennial tournamernt, started slowly in the
    final, falling behind 8-4 at the first technical time-out. Cheered on by
    hundreds of enthusiastic home fans, the Chinese girls came back to run
    off four points in a row to level it at 8-all. Then it was hotly
    contested until China pulled away with the scores at 18-all for a 6-2
    run and went on to clinch the opener.


    Germany fought back strongly in the second set, erasing an
    early 4-1 deficit to tie the set at 12-12 before concluding the set with
    a 6-2 burst to tie the match 1-1.
    The third and fourth sets were
    also tight encounters with Germany managing to hold a slim lead at 22-20
    in the third and 22-19 in the fourth before kicking on for victory.


    "We had two important players injured before this match,"
    German coach Frank Prasser said. "Actually we were playing stronger
    against Chinese Taipei and Brazil (in the quarterfinals and
    semifinals)."


    "From the second set, our players were anxious to win, but it
    went the opposite way," China coach Hao Zhensheng said. "And also our
    player were tired following the hard match against Turkey."


    Earlier on Saturday, Brazil swept Turkey 25-10, 25-11 and 25-23
    for the bronze medal.


    In the boys final, Iran showed strong power to take the first
    two sets with ease 25-17 and 25-15.


    Lagging behind, the French boys fought back with powerful
    spiking and won the third set 25-22 after levelling several times. The
    French team continued their good form in the early stage of the fourth
    set, leading their rivals however, their Iranian counterparts rallied
    back to even the score at 20-20 and from there they gave no chance to
    the French boys and took the crucial set 25-21 and also the match.


    Turkey beat Chinese Taipei to clinch the bronze medal.


    A total of 48 teams from 28 countries and regions took part in
    the tournament with the boys and girls teams divided into four pools,
    each composing of six teams.


    The next World Schools Volleyball Championships will be held in
    France.
