the brazilians literally handed the 4th set to the americans...
Congrats to Brazil, Sheilla always the best in important matches!

31 points, right ?
ok... brazil won... but i must say, i was really impressed with the americans, both with defense and offense.
USA:
great, great, great reception and serves. their serves totally made brazil crumbled at the 4th set. fawcett, foluke, and hodge with their consistent offense and glass utilizing both middles and OH effectively.... they may have lost but that was an amazing play.
BRA:
fernanda garay is just a perfect candidate to fill up the starting 6. suelle had been great so far in the tournament but at the end of the 1st set, she just crumbled. but to replace her with paula? c'mon, the only thing paula did was get herself blocked! the brazilians could've have closed the match at set 4 but their errors started piling up and the only one that kept them alive was sheilla (but with only her, the USA was able to silence her). i thought for sure they'll clam up again at set 5 @ 12-11 but thankfully they're blocks (plus errors on usa side) made the difference once again. finally sheilla...well, what can i say? pure magnificence... just love her
anyway, great play, great play.. .
Were we watching the same match?? A Glass not playing well at all in this match. She's not connecting well with her hitters and the set locations were always off. Hodge and Davis gave up aces at crunch time. No excuses for them.

perhaps in the 5th set their reception suddenly disappeared, but at most it's more than passable.
again, glass was able to utilize her hitters well. certainly she could've done better, but compared to dani lins on the other side of the net, she's more decisive.
Trinidad and Tobago won against Costa Rica in 3 sets in the first time in history.
Congratulations Thompson and Jack.

Dominican Republic reaches the semifinals
CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico, July 5, 2011 – Defending champions Dominican Republic
advanced to the semifinals of the Women’s Pan American Volleyball Cup and booked
a ticket to next year’s FIVB World Grand Prix by defeating Cuba 3-1 (18-25, 35-33, 25-20,
25-21) to win first place in Pool A on Tuesday.
Prisilla Rivera and Milagros Cabral each tallied 14 points for
the winners while Bethania De la Cruz and Annerys Vargas added
13 and 12 respectively. Cuban Kenia Carcaces had a match-high 18
points and Yusidey Silie finished with 14.
“We knew it was going to be a tough match but I am super happy
with the victory,” Dominican Cabral said. “Now we have two days
to prepare tactically for the next round.”
“I think we had many ups and downs and we could not execute well
in the key moments and they took advantage of it,” Cuban Silie
commented.
“Our serves improved after the first set and we were able to set up our blocking
and started to touch many balls which was a key
for us,” Dominican Republic’s coach Marcos Kwiek stated.
“Losing the second set had its effect in our young team,” Cuban
Juan Gala said. “We surprised the Dominican team in the first
set but they were able to win the second and started from there
to dictate the game. I am glad because my young team played well
against one of the best team in the world.”
