South American Club Championship 2016

  • The South American Volleyball Confederation has confirmed the teams participating in the South American Women's Club Championship, which will take place in the city of La Plata, Argentina starting February 24. Six teams will play with the winners qualifying for the FIVB Volleyball Women's Club World Championship.


    Argentina will be represented by hosts Gimnasia and last season's Argentine A1 Women's League runners-up Club Atletico Villa Dora de Santa Fe. They will take on Club Universidad San Martin de Porres (Peru), Club Olympic (Bolivia), Club Juan Ferreira (Uruguay) and Rexona - Ades Vôlei (Brazil), who represented South America at the Women's Club World Championship in 2015.

  • Defending champions Rexona-AdeS Rio de Janeiro of Brazil restricted Argentina's GELP of La Plata to single-digit scoring in all three sets, as they set off on the 2016 South American Women's Club Championship with a crushing 3-0 (25-8, 25-8, 25-9) win.


    Coach Bernardinho brought on his subs for the third set but that did nothing to change the flow of the game. Carol Silva led the scoring with 14 points, with Gabi Guimaraes adding another 10.


    Earlier, to open the tournament in La Plata, the second Argentine team, Villa Dora of Santa Fe, had swept Juan Ferreira of Montevideo 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-18 ). Argentina international Marcia Scacchi led Villa Dora with 17 points, with Candelaria Herrera and Chile's Cris Vorphal adding another 12 each. Outside hitter Andrea Cammarano scored 13 for Juan Ferreira.

  • Hosts GELP of La Plata scored their first win at the 2016 South American Women's Club Championship, 3-0 (25-9, 25-14, 25-23) over Bolivia's Olympic Cochabamba.


    Barring anything schockingly major, the result practically sees GELP through to the Saturday's semifinals, together with defending champions Rexona-AdeS Rio de Janeiro from Pool B.


    Opposite Paula Bertona led the 'Wolverines' with 11 points. Leina Morillo, who came in off the bench scored 10. Tania Ismel was Olympic's best scorer also with 10.
    GELP's Paula Bertona: We are happy because winning always motivates, especially after yesterday's defeat. Now we will give everything in our next game, to get into the final.


    Previously in La Plata, University of San Martin de Porres of Lima had shut out Uruguay's Juan Ferreira of Montevideo 3-0 (25-22, 25-13, 25-18 ) with Milca da Silva scoring 19 points and Peru international Angela Leyva adding another 17. Sofia Neves scored 10 for Juan Ferreira.
    University San Martin's Angela Leyva: We started well but then we had some failures due to that we are changing certain tactical aspects of the game. We believe that in the next matches we will improve our level.

  • Peru's San Martin de Porres University of Lima defeated Argentina's Villa Dora of Santa Fe 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-22), as both teams advanced to the semifinals of the 2016 South American Women's Club Championship in La Plata.


    Villa Dora dominated the serving (7 aces to 4) and the blocking (6 stuffs to 3), but lagged in attacking efficiency, with only 29% (31/107) to 45% (41/113). Brazil's Milca Silva with 16 points, Angela Leyva with 15 and Maguilaura Frias with 13 led San Martin. Micaela Fabian was top scorer of the game with 17 points for Villa Dora.


    Defending champions Rexona-AdeS Rio de Janeiro completely dominated the other match of Friday night, even as coach Bernardinho used mostly subs to defeat Bolivia's Olympic Cochabamba 3-0 (25-11, 25-7, 25-13).


    Despite the bad defeat, however, the moment will be cherised by the Bolivians.
    Olympic Cochabamba setter Claudia Pavisic: We left everything on the court and that was what we wanted. For us it is a dream to play these games, and we are very pleased with what we did today.
    Lorenne Teixeira and Mayhara Silva scored 13 points each to lead Rio de Janeiro. Fernanda Maida was Olympic's best scorer with 11.

  • Rexona-AdeS of Rio de Janeiro remain on track to defend their continental title, after sweeping Argentina's Villa Dora Santa Fe 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-16) in the semifinals of the 2016 South American Women's Club Championship in La Plata.


    With the regular starting lineup back in action for the whole game, Rio de Janeiro were almost faultless (just 5 unforced errors) and proved vastly superior in attacking.


    Juciely Barreto of Rio de Janeiro and Marcia Scacchi of Villa Dora shared top-scoring honours with 14 points each. Gabi Guimaraes and Natalia Pereira added another 11 each for the Brazilian side.


    Peru's University of San Martin de Porres, Lima, edged hosts GELP of La Plata 3-1 (25-20, 24-26, 25-23, 27-25) in a highly emeotional game to become the second finalits of the competition.


    Milca Silva of San Martin: We were ready for a tough game, knowing the potential of the local team and their fans. We know that Rexona is the best team in South America and we have to be better than them to win, and for that we have to make the least amount of mistakes.


    Brazil's Milca Silva scored 27 points for San Martin and Angela Leyva another 26. Alejandra Garcia with 20 was best scorer of the 'Wolverines' of La Plata.


    Earlier, Florencia Aguirre with 22 points led Uruguay's Juan Ferreira Montevideo to a 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-20) win over Bolivia's Olympic Cochabamba for 5th place.


    GELP will face Villa Dora in an all-Argentina bronze medal match at 20:00 GMT, followed by Rexona-AdeS Rio de Janeiro v Universitty of San Martin de Porres Lima in the final at 22:00 GMT, Sunday night.

    It was the second continental title for the Rio side, who had defeated Molico Nestle of Osasco in last year's all-Brazil final. Brazilian teams have won all eight editions to date.


    Rio de Janeiro opposite Monique Pavao was top scorer of the final with 18 points. Outside hitters Gabi Guimaraes and Natalia Pereira added another 13 and 12 respectively. Angela Leyva scored 16 for San Martin.


    Rexona-AdeS Rio de Janeiro outside hitter Natalia Pereira: We are really very happy because we came here to get a ticket to the Club World Championship, and we did it. San Martin played a very good game, giving us problems at several times, but we managed to solve them.


    Earlier, Villa Dora of Santa Fe had defeated hosts GELP 3-1 (25-27, 25-15, 25-21, 25-15) to claim the bronze medal.


    Micaela Fabiani with 22 points and Candelaria Herrera with 17 led Villa Dora. Paula Bertona scored 13 for GELP.


    Villa Dora setter Karina Suligoy: It's a historic achievement. We set a goal of improving our previous position in South America and make the podium, and we managed it.
