Youth World Championships 2009

  • I have bad news For You Konrad and Marieke86. When Belgium Team will be very strong, Your Soul will be in Heaven, Body in Earth :rolll: :rolll: :rolll:

First of all: I wrote IF they will be playing like that, not they WILL, a nd that's the difference. And second: I have nothing against salvation of my soul, but OK... it doesn't have to be to early

    The most important 3:
    POLAND-SZCZECIN-VOLLEYBALL

    5th place - Prediction Game - World League 2011 :D

  • Tommorow semifinals

Belgium - Serbia (re-run of EC finals, Belgium won 3-1 but tomorrow will be some close match to play)
    Brazil - Turkey

Best 3 european teams are in semis, Italy was 3rd on EC but without Scarabelli they are poor, i expect Japan to beat them in battle for 5-8 place, where are also Peru and Thailand.

In "relegation" group best volley are playing Mexican girls which have beaten USA, Dominican R. and China so far, they deserved to play in medals competition. Those 3 mentioned nations have really poor 1992.-93. generation, way below their reputation, especially China.

Not really. The US team that swept Mexico in the Norceca qualifier for the Youth World Champs in 2008 is a different team that is playing in Thailand. Of the 6 starters, only 3 are playing in Thailand: Wopat, Thomas and Denney. The reason behind this one is that the Youth World Champs coincide with the club season in the US so I must say its not really the best team the US could form.

However, I am amazed that Belgium is defeating a lot of good teams right now. Of the 4 semifinalists, its only Brazil that has an equally excellent senior team. Maybe the Junior championships in Mexico can show a better comparison...

"[size=8]It's years and years of work and sacrifice and dedication. Along with a lot of these girls, we've sweat and we've bled and we've cried together in past Olympics. It just brought tears to my eyes, & I'm more than thrilled. This will be forever." -LOGAN MAILE LEI TOM (Silver Medallist - 2008 Beijing & 2012 London Olympic Games, 2011 World Cup runner up, 2003 & 2007 World Cup 3rd place, 2002 World Champs runner up, 4-time World GrandPrix Champs)

  • The problem of Belgium is that they always have 1-2 really good players (Jolien Wittock in the previous generation, now it is Lise van Hecke), but the rest of the team is only average. And like many other countries there are problems in the transition between junior and senior level, many don't make the necessary progress to be good also on senior level...So honestly I think Lise van Hecke can be a player like Virginie de Carne, but Belgian senior will probably never be really great ;)

Allow me to elaborate a little bit on the Belgian results in youth/junior tournaments in the recent past,
because these successes didn't happen by accident.

Talented boys and girls can enter so called "top sport schools" for a variety of sports.
There's one for volleyball, located in Vilvoorde, near Brussels.
Pupils, from age 14 on, combine a reduced school program (21 hours) with 16-20 hours of volleybal training each week.
Training is very professional: it's a balance between technical trainings, power training and injury prevention.
They have a complete staff of trainers, a therapist, a psychologist, etc.
Pupils, who enter the school leave their original teams, and start to play together in senior Belgian leagues (the older, the higher the league)

This is probably one of the main reasons why our youth teams perform very good in international competitions: they play together the whole season, while a lot of other countries only bring their best players together after the regular season is finished.
This seams to be less of an advantage for the junior teams.

The current approach, in which pupils actually leave their original team and join the "talent"-team, is only in place since 2 or 3 years.
But this seams to be the right approach, generating a steady stream of players for our major club teams and senior national teams and spilling less talent (we have only 6 million people to recruit from - I know, Belgium has 10 million inhabitants, but education is organised and subsidized separately by Flemish community (North) and French-speaking community (South). And this program is a initiative by the Flemish community. Unfortunately, there's no French community counterpart)

I'm very curious to here about French, Serbian, German, Polish, ... volleybal federations approach in this matter.
(I know more or less the Dutch approach)

    Fyi (recent Belgian results):

    Youth Girls
    WC 09 3th place
    EC 09 1th place
    WC 07 6th place
    EC 07 4th place

    Youth Boys
EC 09: 7th place (very close to semis after very tied loss to Serbia)
    WC 07: 6th place
    EC 07: 3th place

    Junior Men
    WC 09: (qualified - scheduled)
    EC 08: 7th place
    WC 07: DNQ

    Junior Women
