Lausanne, Switzerland, June 6, 2012 – The Russian capital of Moscow has replaced the Sardinian town Tortoli in Italy as hosts of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Cup Olympic Qualification Tournament with the tournament scheduled to begin a day later, running from June 28 to July 1 at Vodny Stadium.

The Italian Volleyball Federation (FIPAV) communicated to the International Federation of Volleyball (FIVB) that they were no longer in a position to stage the tournament, citing funding constraints from the region. The tournament was therefore assigned to Moscow after they came second in the bidding process.

This event will assign two vacancies per gender at the Olympic Games and will complete the qualification process.

“In this current financial climate, the FIVB needs to be adaptable to changing circumstances such as this,” FIVB President Jizhong Wei said. “We are lucky to have such a willing and able host in Russia, who have been most accommodating and professional since learning that they will indeed host the World Cup. They have proved their success on the FIVB Beach Volleyball SWATCH World Tour as well as during several stages of the CEV Beach Volleyball Continental Cup.”

The eventual winners and runners-up of the World Cup, which will be contested between the silver and bronze medallists from the five Beach Volleyball Continental Cups, will earn a berth to the London 2012 Olympic Games, completing the Olympic qualification process. They will join the winners of the AVC, CAVB, CEV, CSV and NORCECA Continental Cups as well as the top 16 countries from the Olympic rankings (with a maximum of two berths per country) and hosts Great Britain.

Should Russia not qualify for the tournament by finishing second or third at the CEV Beach Volleyball Continentnal Cup, they will be given a place as hosts.

“Russia has always been a strong supporter of the Continental Cup having hosted the first ever sub-zonal tournament in Yantarniy back in July 2010,” tournament director Ilya Volodarskiy said. “We strongly support the country v country format and how it has helped develop the sport further around the world. We have enough experience to make this event a great success and look forward to welcoming some of the world’s top teams once again.”

The competition format will be the best two out of three matches, instead of three out of five, with a golden set deciding the third match if necessary. This is to help fit in the schedule as well as to appeal to the media and specatators. Teams will be split into two pools with the top two countries qualifying for the two final games per gender valid to qualify for the Olympic Games.

Russian fans who can’t make it to Moscow will be able to catch the final two days of action live on host broadcaster NTV Plus.
