World League - 90's

  • For those of you that like the old stuff:

a 10-minute summary of the very first World League final, held in 1990 in Japan.
Italy (reigning European Champion) faces The Netherlands.
Classic Italian Lign-up: Tofoli, Zorzi, Luchetta, Gardini, Bernardi, Cantagalli
Dutch line-up: Blangé, Benne, Zoodsma, Held, Zwerver, Grabert.
(Posthuma left the national time after the '89 European Championships, Held was his substitute from then on)

Apologies for the poor quality (didn't have cable tv back then. That in addition to VHS tape deterioration).
    So, for what it's worth:

  • Dude, I love this stuff! You are my hero, even though it says that the links is not available :(

Sorry, misspelled the link (should work now).

Other than that, I prefer not to be referred to as "Dude", especially not by a "gozer uit Amsterdam". ;-)

  • Is there any connotation for "dude" in Dutch?

No, it has no meaning in Dutch, but English/American words like "dude", "ass", "suck", etc. have become quite familiar through television.
"HeelMooi" seems like he'll never get enough of that.

Haha, okay, I'll remember that for future reference. How bout 'mon gars'? :P Thanx for fixing the link btw

  • 20-minute summary: Brazil - The Netherlands
1st edition World League - final round in Japan.

Brazilian line-up with a lot of young new talent (at that time): Tande, Giovane, Negrao, Carvalho, Jorge, etc.
Actually, the team that will win the golden medal 2 years later in Barcelona.

In the Dutch team, Zwerver is in particular good shape.
After this final round, 3 players would leave the national team and join teams in the Italian league (Blangé and Grabert to Catania - Zoodsma joined a German team, I think).
The other players committed to the national team program, which meant since 1988: no club team membership, national team only.

(Quality somewhat bether than previous posting)

  • Thanx once more! Always like seeing Zwerver in action.

  • 1991 World League Final Round (Milan) - Some more bits and pieces

The Dutch team managed to qualify for the 1991 WL-final pretty easy, although it had to cover the loss of Blangé, Zoodsma and Grabert (cfr. higher).
Among others, Vandermeulen enters the the national team program (with modest play opportunity at first).
The semi-finals against Italy is a real thriller. (notice Velasco's furious reaction after the game)
