1996 Olympics

  • 1996 Olympic final Italy - The Netherlands

(I guess this match deserves a seperate thread)

For the 4th consecutive time, both teams stand eye to eye in a major event's final (EC93, WC94, EC95).
Until that moment, the Italians always won.

Both teams met a few weeks earlier in Rotterdam in the world league final where the Dutch finally managed to win in a tough 5 setter.
The Italians had their revenge in the Olympic preliminary round and swept the Dutch in a clear 3-0 victory (8-15,8-15,13-15).

Throughout the tournament, both teams dominate all other participants on their road to the final to meet once again.
    (tournament results: http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/O…omerspelen_1996/Volleybal)

In the Netherlands, this game was elected as sports event of the century.

p.s.1: Wonder how these teams would compete against, say, the current Brazilian team.
p.s.2: during the 1996 Olympics, a number of events was broadcasted in 2 formats simultaneously: the traditional 4/3 TV-format and the 16/9 format.
I taped this game from a French broadcaster that was distributing the 16/9-format footage.
(Unfortunately, the French commentator gets on your nerves after a while)

  • Richard, thanks a lot!
I guess, this is the most exciting and tense gold medal game ever!. Also thank you very much for the extra information and links to see all the results regarding these 96OG. I will keep this information along with the video.
regards and keep the nice work!

do you have any match with Poland? plz say you have

    Unfortunately not, sorry.
I'm currently struggling a little bit with my VCR-to-PC infrastructure.
Hope to resolve this soon and post some more 1996 Atlanta matches (expect to see teams from USA, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Brazil and of course Dutch and Italian Teams)

  • I have parts of that WL final. I'll make sure to upload that one in a while.
(I'll have to test your patience though - cfr. infrastructure pains mentioned above)

  • Finally, I managed to encode more games: start with olympic semi-final between Russia and the Netherlands

    2nd set: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=GH0276R2

Little bit dissapointing game, the Russian team is simply no competition for the Dutch. The Russians are dominated in every single aspect of the game (e.g. compare Blangé's setting to Kammutskikh's - so much faster, more varied, precize).

Hope you'll enjoy the quality of this footage, I baught myself a Dazzle firewire DV bridge on eBay (mpeg encoding device between vcr and pc - an amazing piece of equipment!). This allows me to capture the VCR-content initially at much higher quality and the final result in divx is much better, with audio in perfect sync.

  • AWESOME man! Quality is really good. And yeah Russian kinda suck, but cool to see Holland OWN!

Seriously though you do not know how happy this stuff makes me. Each time you put something up like this, I feel like it's my birthday!

Well then, happy birthday... I guess!
(Glad to hear you enjoy it)

  • Game between host country USA and Bulgary in Poule A.

Great to see Ganev getting more and more irritated by the Americans
    (disputing some calls).
Golden oldie Jeff Stork ('88 Golden medal and '92 bronze medal- together with Ctvrtlik) alternates with Lloyd Ball on USA's setter position - always a treat to watch him distribute the game.

  • Both teams meet twice in this tournament: first, during this game in the preliminary round and later in the semi-final.

Eventually, all 3 medals went to poule-B teams (The Netherlands, Italy and Yugoslavia - see details in wikipedia-link in first post of this thread).

This game was partially taped from Eurosport, partially from a French channel (broadcasting in palPlus 16-9)

Here you go. I was about to upload this game anyway.
    I don't have the Cuba-Russia game - Worse even, no Cuba-games altogether.

The Yugo's manage to win the first 2 sets easily, the Brazilians win the 3th.
The 4th set is the hardest-fought.
