Women's World Grand Champions Cup 2017

The main reasoning for this tournament is to make sure that the Japanese federation and television networks are part of the FIVB program every year. Actually this one is second on the list. The real reason is like Fabio said, it is to have a single "major" tournament every year in the four year cycle. 1st Year, Grand Champions Cup 2nd Year, World Championships 3rd Year, World Cup 4th Year, Olympics I would say that this tournament is not as important as the other three.

2018 New Volleyball League

Heard an interesting bit of news last night during the USA-Brazil friendly from Paul Sunderland. The new look World League will have the same prize money for men and women. I had not seen anything saying that, so a surprise to me and many others as well I think.

2017 AVC Senior Women's Championship (Philippines/Manila, Aug 9-17, 2017)

Quoted from "sitenoise" http://asianvolleyball.net posted their "Daily Bulletin" before the fifth set. WTF. Zero spectators, it says. I guess that's accurate. Grow the game! http://asianvolleyball.net/wp-content/up…-Bulletin-9.pdf On the first page (after cover) it said the attendance was 2,547, it should say that on the individual match sheets, but sometimes it doesn't. However, after looking at the page they only stats through set 4. Maybe that's why there is a 0 for attendance.

Quoted from "Sidney" Is backrow attack called "pipe" in English? I always thought this was something Brazilian commentators invented USA announcers call it pipe or bick (back quick)

Men's World Championship 2018

Quoted from "Leonardo.D" Quoted from "rbdfabio" If I remember correctly, Argentina and Venezuela played for he last spot for the Olympics last year and Argentina won but it was super close like 3-2 and 15-13 or something like that. Yes, it was like this. And Venezuela was overstimated in that match too. It was a 5-setter match, but the tie-break ended 15-12. The match could have finished 3-1. Facundo Conte played that match, as well as RIP Kervin Pinerúa. Anyway, this results just tell us it is...

Men's Club World Championship 2017

North American really does not have a country club competition. Puerto Rico or Cuba would work, but Africa at least has a continental club championship.

Women's World Grand Prix 2017

The sport needs annual competitions. Hence why the WGP and World League was created. This also allowed national teams more competitions. Before it was just Olympics, World Cup, World Champs and Continental Championships. I think that the new format will be better. Some teams got penalized for playing strong opponents twice or rewarded, looking at you China, with multiple rounds hosting. The teams will have to play everyone, which in theory makes it a league (round robin). Will the travel be horr...

2017 AVC Asian Men's Championship | Indonesia

Japan basically took their top team. They are trying to get as much volleyball in them before 2020. Yes, they did lose to the South Koreans in 5 sets in the Preliminary Round, but they had already qualified for the Top Group in the 2nd Round. Still they've gotten the job done. Indonesia's upset of Iran was a little shocking. But it is the Iran under 23 side, so maybe not. However, Iran outscored them by 6 points, which means that should have won, so they were unlucky. South Korea are using this ...

I just don't get the KYK hate. She is the focal point for the Korean offense, because she is that good. I love Saori Kimura, but often times when you put the numbers side by side, KYK out passed, and spiked better with points and percentages. That surprised me and made me want to watch her more. She may be tired, I mean she doesn't get a ton of rest because she is one of the best players in the world for her club and her national team. All players can have off games, you just don't like it in th...

The Rules - your opinion, suggestion

Quoted from "Rains_of_Castamere" If there's a rule I want to change...I really wish the libero can legally attack from the backrow without the net height limit. Just seems so absurd. I think as long as it's not a downward spike... Everything should be totally fine for everyone. I would love to see the liberos given points for their digs landing on the other side of the net. They used to do it, but not any more.

The Rules - your opinion, suggestion

Quoted from "Meatballs" This is not a suggestion about the game rules but about statistics, particularly for "Best setters statistics. It looks quite unfair when they use a formula based on only running sets, still sets and number of setting errors. Number of running sets highly depend on how your team receives. I think there will be a very fair number and order if they simply add Excellent receives as percentage to the formula. In an example, imagine that setter A got 10 points and settter B g...

Nabeya as I keep saying is a spark plug. If she's not in and Japan loses a set or two, she comes in and Japan's a different team. With Manabe, she was a serving substitute. But with Nakada, she's an receiving/attacking substitute, which in my mind makes her more valuable to the team.

Karch more or less gave the ladies from last year a chance to rest. Adams and Foluke will be back, but this year was going to be a development year. Yes, Lloyd and Murphy did not take a break, kind of due to FIVB rules. However, it is good to see Dixon back after her injury last year.

Japanese NT 2017

Quoted from "sitenoise" Shinnabe has been solid this tournament. What I like about her is she is so elegant in her passing. Almost always puts it right where the setter can do the most with it. I often mention player A or player B being good at receiving/passing, but I'm really just talking about the passing part. The receiving part should go without saying. I'm not sure I understand why receiving a serve should be a problem for any one of the 10-20 women chosen as the best volleyball players i...

Japanese NT 2017

Koga is placed by the Japanese press as a star after her performance in the 2015 World Cup. She's young and does well. She is still young and needs someone to help carry her together. Nakata without Nagaoka due to the injury probably feels that Koga can take on the challenge. It may help for 2020, but right now I question it. For the outside hitters, they are a decent bunch, but the height issue will continue to be a problem against bigger teams. As I mentioned earlier, the middle is a big hole ...
