Week 4: Final Rounds 22-26 August in China
China and the rest Top 5 ranked Teams after the preliminary rounds will be qualified.

  • It's a pity that Brazil will face the same opponents in all 3 weeks. Japan, Italy, Netherlands and Chinese Taipei again and again.

I'd like to see Brazil playing against Russia, Poland and China. Unfortunately this can only happen in the final round.

Nastja, don't you use the msn anymore? You have vanished! I hope you're OK!

  • This is what I found in the FIVB website:

Kazakhstan to debut in 2007 FIVB World Grand Prix as replacement for Thailand

The Thai government’s understandable decision as host nation to field the strongest possible Volleyball team at this year’s Universiade, which will be held in Bangkok from 8th – 18th August 2007, means that the same team cannot compete in the FIVB’s annual women’s World Grand Prix competition. As the World Grand Prix regulations require the participation of each country’s strongest team, the FIVB World Grand Prix Council has approved the replacement of the Thai team by Kazakhstan for the 2007 competition.

After making their debut in international competition at the 2006 World Championships in Japan, Kazakhstan will now participate in the FIVB’s premier annual women’s competition for the first time. From 3rd – 19th August they will play the three rounds in Tokyo (Japan), Khabarovsk (Russia) and Osaka (Japan) where they will face the teams of Cuba, Dominican Republic, Japan, Poland, Russia and the USA.

The top five teams at the end of the preliminary rounds, plus China as host country, will qualify for the final round, which will be held in Ningbo from 22nd – 26th August 2007. A round-robin tournament will then be played over five days to determine the 2007 World Grand Prix Champion. The 2006 medallists were Brazil, Russia and Italy, with Brazil taking a record third consecutive gold medal and sixth overall.

    .

oh, thats a very good thing to happen:
they got two 190 cm tall spikers

  • It is confirmed that neither Fofão nor Walewska will play the WGP this year. I guess the same will happen to Sheilla, Mari and Jaqueline although their dismissal is not confirmed yet. These players will have a sort of vacation after the Pan-American Games and will be back for the World Cup only.

The reason for it is the fact that the "Italian" Brazilian players didn't have enough time to rest. After last year's Italian Championship they joined the NT and then went back to their teams in Italy for this season.

I guess Érika will be the exception for two reasons: first, she was not on Brazil's team last year and her team was prematurely eliminated of the Italian League.

Maybe Mari be tested as an opposite again in the WGP. If she were in the roster for this competition, maybe she will play as opposite.

  • welcome back, celso, and thx for the infomatcion
so practically, brazil will have to send the b team
but isnt it a rule that all teams have to send their best teams to gp, a rule set by fivb????

I think there's that rule, but I don't think Brazil is sending a "b" team... maybe it's not the full power, but it's a mix with good players. I think the team that played GP06 is much better than the one who played GP05 and they were both the team we had by that time to go to the tournament, and we won both! They're not youth :wink2:
And it's not confirmed yet that those players (Mari, Sheilla, Jaqueline) will be given a rest, I think that will happen, but there's always a chance that Zé does not spare them, it happens often in many teams. But let's give some time and see what happens :wink2:

  • Hi colossus! Thanks for the words!

As regards this FIVB rule, I think the problem is not sending the A or the B team, but once the players were defined they can't be changed. I guess this is what happened with Russia Team in 2004. All the best players were confirmed in the competition, they played the 1st round and then they left the competition with the coach. I guess that was the problem. FIVB might have interpreted that action as a lack of interest for the competition.

The point I'm trying to make is, if Brazil's roster doesn't have Fofão, Walewska, Mari, Sheilla or Jaqueline, there's no problem at all. What FIVB doesn't admit is the main players leaving the team to practise for the next competition. I don't think there's anything wrong with that, but this is what FIVB doesn't accept.

i understand they also need some rest too cos they have not stopped playing since 06 montreux; if these players will not be playing in Gp,

    russia have new blood too; so vey likely the contenders for the GP title this year will be italy and holland cos they will be in full teams;

  • Taimaris Aguero in Italy team!! :D
Except for Cardullo's absence, I loved Italian roster!

    (also liked USA's :wink2:, but I always do )

I think Russians are the fav to win the GP, but who knows :wink2:

ehehe i love italy's roster even more cos Paola Croce took Cardullos place! :D
and its so awesome that aguero will finally play for italy. She will cause so many problems to the other teams. I really hope that italy will be a big threat to every team, no matter if its russia or brazil.
Im kind of sad that there is no Piccinini, but well its time to say goodbye to ur own "first love"

aaaaaand i love seeing Erika back on the rosters list for brazil :D

hehe I prefer Cardullo to Croce, but Croce deserved to be there, she's also an amazing libero, Italy won't lose any quality, only gets better :wink2: I also wonder when they'll give a chance to Costagrande too, maybe called for training or something, because she has a lot of potential.
I'm sure that if Italian team is well coached and organized, it will be one of favs of GP and also World Cup.
And I also LOVED to see Erika back!! :D
(just to complete my post: I also LOVEEEEEEEED to see Echenique in Dominican Rep. roster!!! She's amazing!!!)

  • Polish roster is strange for me... Too many changes. :? There aren't Gosia Glinka, Agata Mróz, Anna Baranska but everyone knows why. I don't understand why there aren't Joanna Mirek, Kamila Frątczak and Natalia Bamber. But I think Marco Bonitta is a good coach and he knows what he's doing.

  • I didn't understand why Borodakova isn't on Russia Team's roster. Is she injured or what?

I hope to see her playing on the World Cup!

well, Nick wrote sth about her in another topic... you can find it here

  • Well, it seems the Russian team for the WGP will be much stronger. Only Borodakova will be missing, I mean, from the starting six who played the WCH.

  • Russian team for the first weekend:

    Setters: Marina Akulova, Svetlana Akulova

    Opposites: Ekaterina Gamova, Olga Fateeva

Middles: Natalia Alimova, Julia Sedova, Anna Ivanova, Yulia Merkulova

Outside Hitters: Lioubov Shashkova Sokolova, Elena Godina, Natalia Safronova, Tatiana Kosheleva

    Libero: Svetlana Kryuchkova.

I'm very glad to see Fateeva there and also junior player Kosheleva, I hope they get some playing time.

  • wow, giavani capra is really pushing this again: 8)
gamova as opposite and sokolova as hitter
i thought fateeva will play hitter; :cry2:
