It's not easy to judge from the screen as the camcorder was not completely aligned with the net. It was positioned a little bit at the left (i.e. Russia's side) of the net. With this knowledge in hand, from the replay, the hitting point was still within Russia's court. The referee was not right. He was probably affected by his observation that Choulepov's hand was well over the net after hitting the ball.

Also, in the replay, Grbic's right foot stepped almost completely on Russia's court. Should this be called a foul?

Well, about 10 years after this thread got dead, I am writing here with good news On YouTube, in a channel created by one of our friends here from the forum actually, there are some matches from the tournament recorded in the Netherlands. So far, thanks to rutracker and LightMaster back then, we could watch the medal games and actions from Pool A with the hosts and Russia. Now there are finally some actions from Pool B and the non-Russian semifinal (Czech Rep. vs. Italy), too. Enjoy!

I would like to point out at the semifinal between the hosts Czech Rep. and Italy. I think this is a match we have discussed here in the forum a long time ago. This is the only match I can remember when there was a rotation error. Watch the third set, scoreline 7-9 for Italy. The second ref notices the rotation error by the Czechs and penalizes them by giving all previous "wrong" rotations in favour of Italy. I still need to watch carefully as to understand why the score becomes 0-10 and not 3-13, for instance, it was a while ago and I have clearly forgotten But it is a nevertheless interesting situation, the only one I know, and I thought you would enjoy watching it. And the other matches, too, of course.
