  • Italy thanks the crowded venue with a straight sets victory over Japan

Milan, Italy, September 25, 2010 – In an incredibly crowded venue, Italy posted the first win for the hosting country, overcoming Japan straight sets 25-20, 25-16, 25-15. Italy managed to take control almost since the beginning during the opening set and maintained it also during the second set. During the last set, the hosts have to focus at the beginning in order to hold on the set and finally shut the set firmly 25-15.

Although Japan scored the first point of the opening set, Alessandro Fei immediately put the right gear for Italy scoring the first point for the hosts and Japan was forced to ask the first timeout at 5-2 for the locals. Italy was already leading the match 8-3 at the first technical timeout (TTO) and had to answer firmly when Japan tried to narrow the gap reaching just a 1-point difference at 10-9. Italy got the perfect rhythm before the second TTO that was reached with a 16-12 lead. Japan asked for a second timeout when Italy was leading 20-14. Japan Kunihiro Shimuzu aced twice narrowing the gap between the two teams and Italy asked the first timeout at 22-19. The hosts managed to recover and secured the set at 25-20.

A serving fault gave Italy the first point of the second set. Christian Savani managed to pick up an important point spiking from the back row and assured the Italian lead. It is Fei that made Italy reach the first TTO and took the hosts to 9-3 acing immediately after it. Valerio Vermiglio secured another important point with a perfect one-hand setting and Italy was already cruising for victory 16-7 at the second TTO. Japan asked for timeout at 13-22 for the locals but Italy was already powered to the win and closed the set 25-16.

Japan took the lead 3-0 in the final set, but Italy managed to record the first point with Savani that reopened the run. The score was still close 7-7 and it is after the second TTO that the hosts seized the opportunity starting the fightback that drove them leading the set. Italy was leading 16-11 at the second TTO and did not give Japan the opportunity to take control of the set again, closing it 25-15

Cuba win against Spain after tie break

Spain start the match in a positive way thanks to the strong spikes of Saucedo and García Torres, putting Cuba in difficulty. However, Cuba lead 8-7 at the first technical timeout.

After a good break for Spain the young Wilfredo Leon Venero, with a spectacular action, gets Cuba close to the Spanish team. With five straight points, Spain reach at the second timeout leading for 16-10, then an exciting point to point until a "pipe" by Manuel Sevillano signes the 25-21 for Spain.

Second set starts with the two teams playing point to point. An ace of Joandy Leal Hidalgo together with a block by Aguirre Hierrezuelo take Cuba on 6-3. At the first technical timeout Cuba lead 8-5. Spanish defense is exceeded in several occasions but Cuba, although some serving faults, reach the second technical timeout leading 16-12. Robertlandy Aties Simon spikes a fast attack that worths 22-16 for Caribbean team. Spain try to react without good results but that's not enough: Cuba win 25-18.

Strong services of Cuba open the third set and Spain defend blow by blow. A powerful strike of Leal Hidalgo takes Cuba leading 8-6 at first technical timeout. Spain is in difficulty while Cuba, dragged by Aties Simon, run away 16-11. A good block of Fernández keeps Spain on play (14-18), but Orlando Blackwood’s team is more concrete and win for 25-19.

During the fourth set Spain start good reaching a 6-3, but Cuba due to some attack faults return on even (7-7). Spagna lead again 14-10 with a diagonal spike together with an ace of Sevillano. Another ace of Fernández takes Spain to lead 16-12. Spanish block becomes protagonist stopping spikes of Leal and teammates. Spain run away 20-15, Cuba try to show a reaction but Spain get the fourth set 25-20.

The two teams fight along the tracks of perfect equality. Spain lead 8-7 before changing court despite several serve errors. Pérez spikes out and give 8-8 to Cuba. Spanish player Palharini gets the 10-10. Aguirre attacks perfectly and takes Cuba to 14-13. An error of Sevillano gives to Cuba the last point. The match ends 15-13 after almost 2 hours of great volleyball.

  • The experience prevailed over the size as Puerto Rico beats Australia

Modena, Puerto Rico, September 25, 2010 – Puerto Rico defeated against Australia 3-1 (25-22, 25-22, 28-26, 25-19) in its first match of Pool C at the FIVB Men’s World Championship.
The taller Australian had the advantage in blocking (15-7) but the experience of Puerto Rico prevailed during the key moments of the match. Jose Rivera and Hector Soto had 21 and 19 points respectively for the winners while Victor Rivera added 14. Australians Paul Carroll and Nathan Roberts finished with 12 and 10 points.
Puerto Rico started with Morales setter, Soto opposite, Jose Rivera and Victor Rivera wing-spikers, Escalante and Rodriguez middle-blokers and Rosario libero. Australia opened with setter Young, Carrol as opposite, Yudin and the expert captain Hardy as spikers, Zigler and Passier middle-blockers, and Tutton libero.
A lot of mistakes from both sides while serving at the beginning of the match and the score is tied up at 7-7 and 14-14. Victor Rivera scores to break the evened score and Puerto Rico takes the lead 18-16. Hardy and Passier help Australia to stay close to Puerto Rico, until a block by Jose Rivera closed the set 25-22 in favor of the Puerto Ricans.
In the second set the quality of the game increased on both sides and teams were tied at 7-all. Australia benefited from good blocks by Passier and setter Alexander (who substitutes Young) and took the lead 13-11. Two consecutive points of Soto sent Puerto Rico up 19-18. Parity also on 20-20, and is Soto again – with a nice touch – who scores for a 22-20 lead. Captain Soto again who scores the final point of the set for the 25-22.
In the third set, Australia has a fast start with a Carroll in good condition, especially from the second line (15-11 and 18-14). Australian team makes lesser mistakes and finds more confidence in its own capabilities. Puerto Rico gets closer on 21-20 and Rodriguez’ block (born in 1969, the most “experienced” player in the Championship) produces the leveled score at 24-24. The final points bring a lot of emotion to the match, until Australia takes over on 28-26.
In the fourth set Puerto Rico established the pace and led 8-3 and then 11-4, forcing the Australian coach to make a double change with the opposite Edgard in place of Carroll and setter Young for Alexander. However the duo of Rivera and Soto didn’t lose the intensity and Puerto Rico went on to dominate the score 18-14. An Australian serve error closed the set and the match 25-19.
Therefore, Puerto Rico ties with Russia at the top of the standings in Pool C and make tomorrow’s matches extremely important with Puerto Rico playing against Cameroon and Australia facing the tough task of facing Russia.

USA rebounds to stun the brave Mexicans

Reggio Calabria, Italy, September 25, 2010- The Olympic champions USA rebounded from two sets behind to clinch a difficult victory over the struggling Mexico in a thriller Marathon 3-2 (22-25, 19-25, 25-18, 25-22, 15-11) lasting 118 minutes of exciting action. The Mexican opposite spiker Gerardo Contreras was the star of the first half of the match when he sent his unstoppable hits from position 2 to lead his team to be ahead 2-0 before the USA giant star Clayton Stanley emerged and led USA to win three successive sets to achieve the victory. Both stars scored 22 points for their teams and finished as match top scorers
Mexico struggled at the beginning of the match to tolerate the strong spikes of the USA team as they fought well in the backline but the American succeeded to lead narrowly at the first technical timeout 8-7 due to the skillful combinations led by the setter Kevin Hansen specially to the opposite spiker Clayton Stanley. Mexico entered the match and started to build up the attacks through specially through the veteran opposite attacker Gerardo Contreras who succeeded to penetrate the USA block frequently and scored many crucial points. USA led narrowly at the STT 16-14 but Mexico succeeded again to recover and showed brave performance that allowed them to draw 22-22 after a group of efficient hits from Carlos Guerra. Contreras showed again excellent performance when he scored a critical point at 23-22 as his team win the set there after 25-22.
Mexico continued their fighting spirit in the second set and showed their impermeable block of Tomas Aguilera and Samuel Cordova and succeeded to lead 8-5 at the FTT. The USA team felt danger and Stanley again started to do his job from position 2 and scored frequent points with the aid of Sean Rooney in position 4 as they decreased the point deficit till the draw 14-14 before Mexico again regained their rhythm through the brilliant setter Pedro Rangel who led his team with the proper combinations to all the net positions. USA players showed great disturbance that made them commit frequent mistakes in reception and digging allowing the Mexicans to win the second set 25-19.
USA recovered through their well-known spike service and used this weapon to disturb the Mexican team in reception and thus they succeeded to stop their powerful start of Mexico and rebounded from three points behind to lead at the FTT 8-7. USA team regained the confidence for a while and Stanley started to do his job in serving and spiking and brings his team back to widen the point deficit to 16-12 at the STT. The fitness of the Mexican acutely dropped allowing USA to dominate the net action and forcing their coach to replace his stars Contreras and Rangel to give them some rest after USA led widely 22-15. Although Mexico struggled at the end of the set, yet they couldn’t come back and USA won the set 25-18 to improve the result to 2-1.
USA changed the strategy depending on the quick attacks through the centers specially Russel Holmes and they went ahead 8-5 at the FTT. Mexico used the same weapon and Thomas Aguilera scored two points from the quick combinations allowing them to draw 12-12. The set became tight with the frequent draws that reached till 16-16 but the Americans were still having the upper hand with Stanley doing the major role helped by Rooney to make the big return back after they won the set 25-22 to extend the match to the tiebreak.
Stanley again made the difference in the tiebreak when he served frequent aces and sent his sharp hits from position 2 and the Americans made the court turn at 8-7 to force Mexico to do some mistakes. USA widened the score to 12-9 before finishing the set 15-11 to win the exciting Marathon.

  • Classy performance for Serbia to outclass Germany in three sets

Trieste, Italy, September 25, 2010 – Serbia did not wait too long to confirm their role as real contenders for the medals at the 2010 FIVB Men’s World Championship with a superb display of power and magnificent technical skills to outclass Germany in straight sets (25-21, 25-21, 25-13) tonight at the Palatrieste. The Serbians did honor their fame and were loudly supported by many compatriots who had resumed here from Beograd but also from those that are permanently living in this city, making it the largest foreign community in Trieste. Tomorrow Serbia will play Canada before going into the much awaited fight with Poland that will complete the schedule of Pool F on Monday evening.
The match starring Germany and Serbia was expected to be the main highlight of the day in Trieste and it did not disappoint the many fans that poured in tonight at the Palatrieste. Germany went off pretty well but the blocks of Podrascanin and Janic called for an almost immediate tie. Serbian captain and setter Nikola Grbic delighted the audience with a stellar display of his talent and magnificent “touch” as he even fired up some fast attacks to force Germany’s mentor Raoul Lozano into two time-outs. György Grozer, but that is not a major surprise, was the main attacking force for the Germans but even though they almost managed to close the gap, still Serbia had the upper hand in the final rush with a triple block paving the way for four set balls. A long and exciting rally went to Germany for the 24:21 before Nikola Kovacevic magnificently spiked from the back row for the 1:0.
The second set was not less delightful: German setter Steuerwald found the right understanding with Kromm, Lozano opted for some more changes in comparison with the starting six but the score stayed extremely tight and Serbia did not show any real weakness. Grbic & Co. played with incredible consistency, stamping massive blocks and being always on time for wonderful and effective attacks, with Janic being the main “offensive” weapon for the Serbians. Germany clawed back from 22:17 to 24:21 but it was not enough to stop the run of the guys in blue jerseys who bagged also set nr 2.
The plot of the story did not change also in the third set: Germany took some risks from the serving line, but their pipes were not that effective as the Serbian block was always well positioned to re-affirm the absolute dominance of the team that had finished third in this year’s FIVB World League finals in Cordoba. Grozer & Co. could not handle the amazing consistency of the Serbian side and the match came to a close with a bright smile stamped on the face of the Serbian players and of their many loyal fans.

Bulgaria sweeps China to open FIVB World Championship

Turin, Italy, September 25, 2010 - Bulgaria opened its 2010 FIVB Men's World Championship with a 25-14, 25-19, 25-22 victory over China in Pool E being held at Palasport Ruffini in Turin, Italy.

Bulgaria and France, which defeated Czech Republic 3-2 earlier tonight in Pool E, lead the group with 1-0 records. The top three teams in each of the six FIVB Men's World Championship first round pools advance to the second round, while the fourth-place team is eliminated from the tournament.

Matey Kaziyski and Vladimir Nikolov charted match-high 14 points for Bulgaria as it held a 12-6 block advantage and 5-1 service ace margin. China was led by Ping Chen's 13 points. Bulgaria benefited from 27 Chinese errors in the three-set victory.

Since the first points of set 1 the match was very spectacular, showing one after the other a quick hit of the taller player of China, Hongmin Bian (210 cm), and a violent spike of Kaziyski. Bulgaria scored two consecutive points to take an 8-6 lead at the first technical timeout (TTO) of the opening set, then pushed the advantage to 12-8 as Kaziyski tallied four early spikes. Bulgaria increased its margin to 20-11 with four points immediately after the second TTO. Bulgaria capped the set at 25-14 as it held team advantages of 15-6 in spikes and 4-1 in blocks. Moreover, the European team block efficiency most of all thwarted the attacking attempts by China.

The second set was close in the early going with Bulgaria holding an 8-7 advantage at the first TTO. Bulgaria broke an 11-11 tie with five consecutive points behind the serving of Kaziyski to reach the second TTO leading 16-11. China closed to within two points at 19-17 leading to a Bulgaria timeout. The break proved effective as Bulgaria finished out the set with a 6-2 scoring run that included Nikolov's third ace of set and two blocks from Yosifov. The set finished with a 25-19 despite Chen, best Chinese scorer in the second set. Bulgaria produced five blocks in the second set to china's two. Even if the scoring was very tight, Bulgarian team seemed to be more organized in the court, having an high performance on all the skills except four serving and one hitting errors.

Set three seemed to be a continuation for Bulgarian team, helped by some Chinese serving and attack errors too. Bulgaria scored three straight points to break a 4-4 tie in the third set and went into the first TTO leading 8-5. Bulgaria extended its advantage to seven points at 15-8, but China charged back to 15-11 with an ace by Chen and block from Weijun Zhong. China cut its deficit to a single point at 18-17 on consecutive Bulgaria errors. However, consecutive China errors cut its rally short on the set's final two points at 25-22. China committed nine serving errors in the third set alone.

  • Serbia beat Germany quite easily :what:

This is a little suspicious to me...I won't be suprise if Germans will lose against Poland in similar easy way today as it was against Serbia on Saturday. Beating Canada wouldn't be huge problem for them, so they would finish first phase of this tournament on 3rd place which secure theoretically the easiest opponents in next phase.......but maybe Serbia really played that great ;)

Yes, the rules we have in these WCh give as reasons to some speculations. I hope, that Germans lost so easily, cause they are just weaker than Serbians. :)
Poland had problems with Canada in the first sets, but it was the first game in the tournament, and - as has Mateo written - it is alway difficult to begin such a game (even Cameroon was able to score more than 20 pts against Russia). From the half of the second set we could see real Polish volleyball. I liked winiarski and Kurek in our team and Gavin Schmitt in Canada - he is an interesting player. I think he should play in stronger league than in the Korean one.
We were close to two big surprises (CUB-ESP and USA-MEX), but the final results was like everybody had expected.
I'm not surprised, that France had problems with Czech Rep. Czech Rep. is solid team and Frenchmen haven't been impressing lately.
Anyway - I expect a victory over Germany tonight, no matter whether it is profitable or not for us. Three loses in WL was enough for me :)

I agree with you that the 3rd team will have the easiest opponents in next phase. Let's see today how germany will play against Poland.

  • Canada 1 x 0 Servia

Canada played a nice game against Poland, and today too.

And I still can't watch on bwin from Canada, tried two different computers, Firefox and Internet Explorer, uninstalled and installed Flash Player again, unblocked scripts, made sure I was logged in.... yet it still "fails to connect to server" immediately for me. I really wish there was another option besides bwin for me. ;( ;(

    Canada 2 x 0 Servia

  • wow Canada is playing so well today. even etter than yesteraday. their defence is outstanding. overall great match lots of spectacular rallies. keep it on Canada :drink:

Anyone can support a team that is winning - it takes no courage. But to
stand behind a team to defend a team when it is down and really needs
you, that takes a lot of courage.

  • Canada 3 x 1 Servia.Glenn Hoag is a great coach.

Yes, Canada is playing so well in this WCH. This group is the hardest, i don't konow who will be in next phase.

  • good job by Canada! But one couldn't help but think, did Serbia want to lose?!

  • Daniel Lewis played a great match. He did a great job last season in ACH volley bled. Germany needs to play very good today or they will have problems.
