Besides the fact she is very young and inexperienced, it always takes a long time (long period of training) before a team gets used to/harmonizes well with a new setter. It’s a good thing for Laura she has an experienced team around her; the other girls can help her a lot. This not change My mind. Now She is bad in Her job. Maybe in future She will play very well. If Holland want get something in this World Grand Prix She must learn fast.

In fact, you are right, Bartek Laura isn't on international level yet. That's true. But let me tell you: WGP is for Netherlands just an extraordinary preparation for WCH in Japan. So, Netherlands doesn't want to get something in this WGP --> there is no pressure at all. Main target for WGP is to let the younger players ( like Dijkema!) gain experience on international level!

---> Avital Selinger about WGP: WGP is an important tournament, but it’s in fact a preparation for the main target: WCH in Japan. At WGP we will see what our position is related to the other topteams. WGP is also important because it is a way to get experience for our young players.

Puerto Rico is playing not that bad, but China's level is absolutely impressive
Chen Liyi and Hui Ruoqi are very good players, I think Wang Yimei's time is over...

Chengdu, China, August 6, 2010 - The Netherlands picked up their first win of the 2010 FIVB World Grand Prix with a straight-sets (25-22, 25-22, 25-23) win over Thailand in Chengdu, China as the 18th edition of the tournament got under way on Friday.
FIVB President, Mr Jizhong Wei was in attendance as the 2007 champions laid down the marker for Pool C.

Both teams started aggressively with the lead changing many times. Thailand took the early lead and were ahead until late in the set when the Dutch eventually closed the gap before Caroline Wensink's powerful spike gave the European side the first set.
Thailand again went on the rampage early in the second set, gaining a four point lead thanks to a number of solid spikes from captain Wilavan Apinyapong. However mistakes began to creep into Asian Champions game and the Netherlands duly took advantage to again steal the set.

The Netherlands coach Avital Selinger was forced to call an early time out in the third as Thailand dominated proceedings up to the first technical time out. Things didn’t improve for the Dutch following the break as Amporn Hyapha contributed a number of powerful spikes to extend the lead. However the Netherlands managed to fight back and drew level at 14-all and despite a passionate display from the Thai girls they couldn't find the momentum as the Dutch saw out the match.

The Netherlands will now face Puerto Rico on Saturday as Thailand battle their Asian rivals China. Puerto Rico and China will face each other later today.

Akinradewo is playing just like when Scott-Arruda played, wow I'm totally impressed Mary Spicer should use the middle more.

Chengdu, China, August 6, 2010 - China held off a dogged Puerto Rico to begin its 2010 FIVB World Grand Prix campaign with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-22) victory in Pool C at home in Chengdu on Friday.

A total 3,000 enthusiastic home fans turned out to see the victory, including FIVB President Mr. Jizhong Wei.

Puerto Rico came out of the blocks firing on all cylinders and quickly gained the lead before China tightened their block to bring the scores level. The home sides Ma Yunwen then went on the offensive to pull off a series of powerful spikes to help boost China before Hui Ruoqi sealed the set with a cleverly placed serve.

China raced into the lead in the second set and rarely let Puerto Rico back into the game after that. Chen Liyi scored a number of spike points to take the score to 2-0 for the hosts.

The third set was much closer as teams traded points throughout. However China pounced on three errors from the visitors to take a three-point advantage which they carried through to the end.

With day one of the competition now over in Chengdu, China top the standings just ahead of the Netherlands on points ratio. Saturday will see the home side face Thailand and Puerto Rico play the Netherlands.

São Carlos, Brazil, August 6 – Brazil began their defense of their FIVB World Grand Prix crown with a straight-sets (25-15, 25-19, 25-12) victory over Chinese Taipei at home in São Carlos on Friday as the opening weekend of the premier annual women’s tournament continued.

Brazilian middle blocker Thaisa Menezes topped the scores with then points while Chinese Taipei opposite Chen Wan Ting scored eight for the visitors.

Brazil started well earning a quick lead thanks in part to the attacking play of middle blocker Fabiana. Using their good serve and blocking with efficiency, Brazil increased their lead before closing the set.

Chinese Taipei began to use their intelligence in the second set, causing Brazil’s previously strong attack to suffer thanks to a number of good serves from the Asian side which saw them take the lead. However a good sequence of serves from wing spiker Jaqueline saw Brazil regain the lead and carry it through till the end of the set.

Brazil gained momentum in the third set, storming to a quick 9-0. Coach Zé Roberto then decided to use his whole squad in an effort to boost experience as Brazil continued to dominate, finally seeing out the set and the game.

Tomorrow Brazil will face Japan while Chinese Taipei face Italy.

Head Coach - Mr. SAKAKUCHI Norimasa – It was our first international game. The players felt the pressure. They were nervous during the game. However, it was a great opportunity for us to play in Brazil. We played with our hearts.

Captain - Yen Min –It was our opening game and it is very difficult to play against Brazil. However it was important because gave experience for us and we will try to play better the next game.

Head Coach – José Roberto Guimarães - I liked the way we played today. In the second set we had problems with our pass but we execute well our relation between blocking and digging. We used all our players. It is important for the future of the team.

Captain – Fabiana Claudino - It was a good game for us. It is really good to play in Brazil. We are starting now and our focus is the FIVB World Championship. It was my first official game as captain and all the team gave confidence for me and I felt fine no pressure at all.

Congrats to Japan.

Nice game by the US. Destinee Hooker (Opposite) played very well.. The other young players like Akinradewo, Hodge and Larson also played good. Heather Bown was the only player from that OG team that played yet the results were encouraging.

And what a game by Japan! So quick and nice setting from Takeshita. She's so fun to watch!

Now watching Polska and Germany. Couldn't get better than this
