  • Another home victory for Turkey in Gaziantep

Gaziantep, Turkey, June 13, 2010. Turkey celebrated another victory this afternoon in Gaziantep as the local guys defeated once again Austria for the second leg of the 2010 CEV European League. This time the hosts needed four sets to cruise past their opponents but finally were happy with their overall performance.
After the previous match staged on Saturday, their Croatian-born coach Veljko Basic had stated: “We had to work too much to find consistency in blocking and serving and hence were affected by some errors. We did not play really good but this is a very young team, so it takes time to have things run properly. Still I want to have my young players on the court since the European League represents a very important chance to get international experience. And at the end of the match we were able to realize that this tactic paid off”.
This afternoon the teams set up a very exciting battle, with the score staying extremely close in the opening set. After the first technical break, Turkey changed gear and especially young setter Berkan Bozan performed really well. The hosts stretched their margin at the second mandatory stop (16:12) and profiting of some mistakes of their opponents closed the set pretty quickly at 25-18. Austria fought back bravely in the second set and Thomas Zass scored many points in attack. That was the key to level the match with the set ending at 25-23 for the guests. Turkey led all the way through in the third set, with Burutay Subasi and Ahmet Pezuk contributing pretty much to the final 25-18. Austria clawed back in the opening section of the first set, leading first 4:0 and then 8:5 at the first technical time-out. Even though the guests set the tempo also for the second compulsory break (16:12), still Turkey stormed back – especially with Serhat Coskun – and captain Sinan Cem Tanik to finally tie at 23 and finish the match some minutes later. Austrian Thomas Zass topped the charts of the best scorers this afternoon with 25 points while Serhat Coskun was the most effective among the Turks with a total of 17.

  • Greece and Turkey serve a "tie" in Patras

    Stats Photos
Turkey’s men’s team spoiled the party for the Greek fans that came to the “Dimitris Tofalos” sports hall to watch the double clash between Greece and the neighboring country in the 2010 CEV European League. After the victory for the girls of Caprara, it was Turkey’s turn to celebrate the win in Pool B of the men’s competition with a 3:0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-22). The visiting team proved to be more stable and was better in serving (6 aces for 1) and blocking (12 blocks for 7). The two teams will meet again on Saturday.
In the 1st set Greece managed to overcome a “handicap” of several points (suggestively, 15:19, 17:20, 19:21, 20:21, 20:23) to bring even with 23:23. In the end it was Turkey who managed to gain the next two points and lead with 1-0. In the second set, the teams were very close until the final points but many mistakes from the side of the home team gave away the set. Almost identical was the 3rd set, with Turkey being more determined in the final points. “Nothing went well. I’m impressed by the fact that my team gives everything in training but we don’t see it in the court. We knew that Turkey doesn’t make easy mistakes so we tried to pressure them with our service but surprisingly, it was us who made the mistakes” said Gordon Mayforth, head coach of Greece.
His colleague, Veljko Basic commented: “We were good but not that stable. So was Greece. I know tomorrow things will be different”. Both coaches agreed that the games in September for the qualification to the final round of the 2011 CEV European Championship “will be very different. It’s too early to say anything”.
Serhat Coskun scored the last point of the game and 15 more, and was the top scorer for Turkey. In Greece’s case that was the captain, Nikos Roumeliotis with 12.
The latter said after the game: “Nothing went well today for our team. Turkey played better than us. It could be one of the worse games we played with this composition”.

  • Greece and Turkey continue to share victories in Patras

The guys of Gordon Mayforth managed to reverse Friday’s negative appearance at the “Dimitris Tofalos” sports hall. They even achieved to return in the game during the first set, when they were struggling behind by 8 (16:8) and 7 points (18:11). Greece broke even (22:22) and with two block points from Petreas snatched the first set. It was obvious that the Greek players were looking for revenge for Friday’s defeat and got it in the end since they proved to be more stable.
“It’s the first time I play against coach Basic and I’m trying to build a good relationship with him since we are going to be seeing each other much over the next period of time” joked Gordon Mayforth. “We are trying to combine youth and experience” he concluded. “We are trying to do the same thing” agreed Veljko Basic, who added: “When Greece pressured us from the service line and the block, we couldn’t respond”.
“We showed some good team work and that led us to victory” said Akis Aspiotis. Sinan Cem Tanik, Turkey’s captain who had his birthday on Saturday, commented about the home and away qualification matches for the 2011 European Championship: “These games where a good rehearsal but for sure the conditions will be different then”.
For the Greek team, Fragkos and Roumeliotis scored 11 points each the same as Coskun for Turkey.

  • Double victory for Turkish lions in Ankara

Ankara, Turkey, June 28, 2010. This past weekend the Turkish men’s national team delighted an impressive audience at the brand-new “Baskent” sports hall in Ankara to claim a couple of victories against Greece in the fourth week of play for the 2010 CEV European League. Both matches ended on a 3:1 for the hosts who are currently ranked second in Pool B and hence in full contention for a spot in the final four to be played next July in Spain.
On Saturday afternoon the start of the match was extremely tight. Turkey set the tone for both mandatory stops in the opening set (8:7 and 16:13) but Greece came a little closer profiting of some serving mistakes from the Turks. After a time-out, the guys around coach Veljko Basic restored their dominance and clipped the first set 25-19. Greece played with much more consistency in the second set, with Gerasimos Kanellos being especially very effective in attack. The guests stayed in the lead at both technical breaks (8:5 and 16:9) and in spite of a late comeback from the Turkish side, Greece tied the set count with the final 25-22. Serhat Coskun and the youngest player included in the Turkish roster, Karaagac, played very well in the third set and built a strong lead (16:10) before Greece stormed back for the provisional 20-17. However, Turkey maintained cool nerves and Coskun silvered a set ball for the final 25-22. The Turks started set nr 4 with a high morale, but Greece did not surrender that quickly and a tie was to be seen on the scoreboard at 13. Greece’s mentor Gordon Mayforth asked for a stop at 19:17 for the hosts and even called for another break only a few rallies later, but that was not enough to stop the run of the Turkish lions who finally claimed the match 3:1 (25-23).

The second match scheduled for Sunday afternoon followed a similar pattern. In the opening set both teams trailed point for point up to a tie at 15. Starting from there Greece tried to display an optimal performance but the home guys did not let it go that easily and in a close finish eventually cruised past their opponents for the final 27-25. Bosnian-born Mitar Tzourits put up an extremely solid play for Greece in the second set but Emre Batur and Ahmet Pezük helped the Turks very much in maintaining the real control of the operations and extend the lead to a 2:0 (25-22). Long rallies were to be enjoyed in the third set, where Greece set an impressive tempo and led all the way through for the 25-20 that stretched the game to the fourth set. Emre Batur stood out on court for Turkey in what proved to be the final set of the game; after some struggles and having coped with a fierce resistance from the Greek side, Turkey powered past 25-23 and could celebrate the second victory in two days against the team that next September will contend them a spot for the final round of the 2011 CEV European Championship.

  • Turkey wins thriller with Austria

Steyr, Austria, July 2, 2010. The first game of the 2010 CEV European League played in Steyr ended with a 3:0 victory for the Turkish team (25-20, 31-29, 28-26) on the home guys of Austria. Even though the match finished in three sets, it was actually a very close call and thrilling until the end.
The game started out very evenly. The Austrians entered the first technical time-out with a two- point lead, but the Turkish national time was able to tie the score at 10. What followed was a very close game up to the second technical time-out, were the Turkish team took over a two-point lead. At 20:17 the Turks were able to extend their lead and won the set 25-20 in the end. The second set started out similar to the first one. This time it was close until the end. The Austrians were very determined, but in an enthralling finish the Turks prevailed 31-29.
In the third set the Turks had a good start and built up a four-point lead very fast. The Austrian team showed proper mindset, fought back into the game and tied the score at 10. At the second technical time-out they were two points ahead, but the Turkish team didn't stay behind for long. At 21 they tied the score and in the end they won the game with another very close finish (26-28).
Best scorers of the match were tonight Laimer (18), Schneider (11) and Frühbauer (9) for Austria; Batur (20), Tanik (9) and Karaagac (8) for Turkey.
Veljko Basic, head coach of Turkey, said after the match: “It was a difficult game for us today and I'm glad we decided it for us. I'm not satisfied with the presentation of my team though - the players were under pressure, because we wanted to secure the second place in the league. In order to win tomorrow we definitely have to show a better performance”.
Sinan Cem Tanik, captain of Turkey, added: “This game was a thriller. It was very stressful for both teams, the Austrians fought throughout the entire game, but in the end we were able to secure our spot. I can't say that we played very well – at times we were very weak. The Austrians showed resistance and even though we started out each set rather well, the Austrians caught up in the middle and we had a hard time making the decisive points. I assume the audience will have a similar thriller tomorrow”.
Michael Warm, head coach of the Austrian team: “From my point of view we played at our limits today. We had a few strange situations and I have to make a compliment to the guys for keeping a cool head. Especially Michael Laimer showed a strong performance. In the end we simply ran out of luck, but didn't make any crucial mistakes”.
Local captain Daniel Gavan: “We played very well today and kept up with the Turks. Especially the young players showed good progress and we would have deserved at least one set. Tomorrow is our next chance and I don't want to make any promises but I have a good feeling about it”.

  • "Devastating" Portugal outclasses Turkey

Povoa de Varzim, Portugal, July 10, 2010. This afternoon Portugal defeated Turkey 3:0 (25-17, 25-23 and 25-9) in a very emotional match held in the hall “Pavilhao Desportivo Municipal Povoa de Varzim” and conquered the 10th victory out of 11 matches played so far in the 2010 CEV European League. With the two teams already qualified for the final four to be played next week in Guadalajara, Spain, both coaches took the opportunity to test their players. Much more satisfied was Juan Diaz that saw his players complementing a good reception with 11 aces and 12 blocks. The third set was even “devastating” as recognized by Sinan Cem Tanik, Turkish captain.
The team coached by Croatian Veljko Basic started the match in good manner (3:0), with 2-pts scored by Emre Batur, the last one against a block from Valdir Sequeira. But the local nº 13 returned him the “courtesy” shortly after by blocking – together with Joao Malveiro – an attack from the nº 15 from Turkey, tying the score (3:3). Portuguese setter Tiago Violas granted Portugal with a 3-pts advantage when reaching the first technical time-out. Their confidence increased even more with an ace from Valdir (9:5). Turkey tried to stop the point loss, but a new ace, this time from Andre Lopes (11:6) forced Basic to call his players. A new ace of captain Joao Jose immediately after a block from Malveiro, granted Portugal with the 15:8 and thrilled the public. Valdir, with an attack, increased the advantage to 7-pts (17:10) and practically ended the Turkish resistance. Trailing down 12:20, Basic asked for another time-out, but it didn’t work out, since Portugal closed the set 25-17.
The second set was quite more balanced. A better reception from Turkey and more difficulties in attack from Portugal created constant ties (3:3, 6:6, 10:10, 22:22) – a situation only broken by a slight advantage for Portugal at the second technical time-out (16:13) – and delayed until the final points the knowledge about the winning team. Andre Lopes would close the set (25-23) with an ace, with the ball hitting the net and falling under the astonished look from the Turkish players.
The third set was clearly dominated by Portugal. With an excellent series of blocks, with highlights to Joao Malveiro, Valdir Sequeira and Carlos Fidalgo, and an even more productive series of aces – highlighting, in this aspect, Joao Jose and Marco Ferreira – made it easy an expected difficult set. The victory by 25-9 leaves no margin to any other comments.
Valdir Sequeira, with 17-pts, was the best scorer of the match, while on the other side the best scorer was Emre Batur, with 12.
Portuguese coach Juan Diaz said: “We played this match as a preparation for the Final Four and in order to be able to recover psychologically and physically the players and the truth is that we were able to be well in the reception and in blocking and the attack also worked out”.
Local player Flavio Cruz added: “Since this match didn’t alter anything in terms of ranking, it worked out as a preparation for the Final Four and I believe that we were well, even though we entered badly in the first two sets. We served aggressively and we were well also in blocking. There was also less positive aspects, but these matches are perfect for analyze these situations”.
Turkey’s coach Veljko Basic: “Congratulations to Portugal. We have some injured players and weren’t able to give a better reply to Portugal that played an almost perfect match”.
Captain Sinan Cem Tanik: “There is nothing much to say. Congratulations to Portugal by the way they played and did some damage in our side-out, creating us difficulties to overcome the block. We were able to fight back in the second set, but the third one was devastating”.
The first match worked almost in full for the Portuguese team that was very good in attack and in reception but even better in service and block. Nevertheless Juan Diaz doesn’t count on the same “easiness” for the second match. The Cuban coach highlights that “this will be a more balanced match, since both teams will analyze what happened in the first match and play a last good rehearsal before the Final Four”.
