Gresik
City, Indonesia, June 26, 2010 –
Zobahan of Iran, PR Korea, Thailand's Federbrau and
Kazakhstan's Zhetyssu emerged victorious in their respective pools on
the opening day of the 2010 Asian Women’s Club Volleyball Championship
in Gresik City, Indonesia on Saturday.
The nine-day tournament from June
26 to July 4 draws ten club teams who are divided into two pools. The
club teams from Indonesia, IranJapan, Chinese Taipei and PRK are
competing in Pool A while those from Vietnam, Thailand, China,
Kazakhstan and Korea play each other in Pool B.
The winners of the tournament
will progress to the FIVB Club World Championships in Doha, Qatar from
December 14-21, joining Italy’s Bergamo and Prisons Kenya who have
already qualified.
Pool A
Home side Petrokimia Gresik succumbed to an opening day loss to Zobahan
of Iran in straight sets (25-22, 25-20, 25-12).
The Indonesians started strong by relying on the steady service of
captain Maya Puspita Widiastuty and the commendable reception efforts of
libero Yulis Indahyani. However, inconsistent offensive plays took its
toll on the Indonesians allowing Iran to slowly build up their momentum.
From lacklustre defense early on in the opening set, the Iranians were
able to overcome their Indonesian counterparts by playing more
aggressively at the net. Zobahan’s Tatiana Alvez Dossantos topped the
scores with 19 points as with Zahra L.Vahedi and captain Viktoria Brice
also helping out the Iranian cause.
Sharif Zadeh Molouk, head coach ofZobahan said “We need more practice and we
also need to gain more experience. This is only the second time that
the team is participating in an international competition.”
Laiyan Viktor, head coach ofPetrokimia Gresik said that “Iran performed well, because they have good players.
They also have a good libero.”
The closing match for Pool A
was a five-set thriller between Chinese Taipei and the People’s Republic
of Korea, with the latter prevailing (25-16, 21-25, 17-25, 25-23,15-7).
The People’s Republic of Korea displayed their on-court brilliance in
the opening set, with Jong Jin Sim and Kim Yong Mi showing off their
unwielding attacks. Chinese Taipei fought back with its own offensive
armoury from captain Teng Yen Min and Tsai Yin Feng, who boldly
challenged the opponent’s blockers. Chinese Taipei prevailed in the
second and third sets but were edged out by their counterparts’ varied
offensive moves in the fourth set. In the decider, Chinese Taipei could
not maintain their momentum as they suffered dearly from misfired
attacks. The People’s Republic of Korea showed better mastery of their
endgame and clinched the match.
Pool B
Federbrau of Thailand defeated its Pool B counterparts KT&G Ariels
of Korea in four sets (25-12, 20-25, 25-23, 25-17). The Thais
capitalized on a variety of offensive options, with setter Nootsara
Tomkom distributing her plays to almost everyone on the team. Onuma
Sittirak and captain Wilawan Apinyapong proved to be too much of a
burden for the Korean team, as they combined for a total of 32 points.
Not even the gallant scoring efforts of Korea’s Lee Jung Ok and Lee Yeon
Joo, with 13 points and 12 points respectively, were enough to surmount
Thailand’s on court composure.
In the other Pool B match, Kazakhstan’s Zhetyssu overcame China’s
Tianjin Bridgestone in 3-1 (25-16, 25-23, 20-25, 25-22). The Kazakhs
came out strong as they displayed sheer offensive power with their
attacks at net. Their easy first set win was soon threatened as the
Chinese team tapped its blockers Mi Yang and Li Ying to set up an
impenetrable stance at the net. This defensive reinforcement, combined
with Yin Na and Zhang Xiaoting’s scoring contribution paid off for China
as they were able to steal the third set away from Kazakhstan. By the
final set Tianjin could no longer handle the fiery attacks of Olga
Drobyshevskaya and Olessya Arslanova and the match closed with a Kazakh
victory.
