  • Sofia, Bulgaria, March 29, 2011. The women’s team of CSKA SOFIA rounded up another brilliant season after earning double honors in Bulgaria. Both the National Championship Title and the National Cup have been retained by the incumbent holders as the Reds snatched both trophies in tough clashes with new archrivals Maritsa PLOVDIV.

Head Coach Yuliya Stoyanova and her players incurred only one single loss in both competitions throughout the season. In the Best-of-3 Championship Series, CSKA won two four-set victories over Maritsa – 3:1 (25-19, 25-22, 19-25, 25-20) in Sofia and 3:1 (25-17, 25-20, 25-27, 25-22) in Plovdiv in front of overpacked spectator stands, to triumph with the golden medals. The representatives of Bulgaria in this season’s CEV European Cups also met earlier in the National Cup final at Hristo Botev competition hall in the country’s capital. CSKA’s win in this one was even more convincing – 3:0 (25-20, 26-24, 25-12) despite declared ambitions by Maritsa to earn its first ever national trophy. Ralitsa Vasileva from CSKA was individually honored as BGvolleyball.com Best Junior (U-19) Player of the national cup tournament, while Maritsa’s Diana Malinova was crowned BGvolleyball.com Miss Kupa Bulgariya 2011. While no other individual prizes were awarded in either tournament, the specialized newssite launched a new monthly poll that declared CSKA captain Mariya Karakasheva Bulgaria’s Female Player of the Month for both January and February. In both competitions the top 4 was completed by former European powerhouses Slaviya SOFIA and Levski Volley SOFIA. While the Blues from Levski beat the Whites from Slaviya in a dramatic five-setter to earn the third place in the national cup tournament, the roles were reversed in the tough-contested national championship bronze medal series to be eventually conquered by Slaviya with two victories to one.
