  • Cataño opened the Final Series of the Puerto Rico Women’s Volleyball Superior League with a straight-set (25-21, 25-17, 25-23) victory over defending champions Caguas in front of more than 4,000 spectators on Tuesday.

Cataño scored with 16 blocks during the night against only seven by the defeated side. The best scorers for the winning team were Jones with 13, including seven blocks, while Forsett and Encarnacion charted 12 and 10 respectively. For Caguas, Stacey Gordon had 15 points and Annerys Vargas registered 11.

The second match of the best-of-seven series will be next Thursday at Mario “Quijote” Morales Coliseum of Guaynabo.

“We prepared for this match and were able to stabilize our blocking throughout the match,” Jones said. “But this is only starting and we need to continue working game by game. We are playing against a great team and we know they play hard and never slowed down.”

Cataño team didn’t show any sign of pressure despite playing their first final ever and played with great control with setter Courtney Thompson feeding up all their attackers.

Caguas put some pressure late in the first set when tied up the score at 21-all but Cataño recovered behind the clutch blocking by Angela Forsett.

The visiting team controlled the second set with the key offense led by Forsett, Tatiana Encarnación and Oneida González along with the effective job by setter Thompson.

In the third set, the defending champions didn’t quit and battled hard but the inspiration of the visitors was even bigger. The clutch blocking by Jessica Jones and Shannon Wingate proved to be a key and the match closed out with consecutive blocks by Jones and Gonzalez.

  • Catano currently leads the 7-match finals series 3-0. 4th and possibly final match tonight.
