World League 2013

  • And now pool E became more interesting, Canada came back in tiebreak. Russia with balanced spike, 4 players with similar amount of points and it wasn't enough. What a surprise 8o

  • Normally I would say it was again a masterpiece of Hoag, but this time I think Russia seriously underestimated Canada. They totally lost focus as of set 3. Nevertheless, Canada did it! Even without Schmitt at his best and with Schneider on court!

  • What's funny is that if they lose tomorrow they are out regardless of this.

Anyway, of course, this is like they won a championship already.

Only losing 2-3 Canada can be still in game, but then we'll count small points

  • Yeah they will be out unless they beat Brazil and Brazill will be out  but I dont think that will happen. But anything can happen

  • no underestimation. Russia wanted only 2 sets to qualify after+13 points win vs Brazil and they want also to kick out Brazil this is why they lost to Canada 3-2. Now they give Canada a hope to gain two sets and kick out Brazil. Canada is +2 and Brazil -13. So brazil needs 3-0, 3-1 to qualify. I think 3-2 and + 8 points is difficult

  • Russia's already in the semis. No matter what 3–2 win Brazil would take, Russia will have better points ratio:

    1 Russia 1.059
    2 Canada 1.010

Yes! :woohoo: Thanks 4 calculating :super:

  • Stats are avilable P-2 P-3, in Russia 4 players over 15 points: Muserskiy 19, Spiridonov 18, Pavlov & Sivozhelez 17. In Canada only Perrin 20, rest over 15, moreover Perrin with 0 points last set. Russia had better spike efficiency and Grankin set balls in a more balanced way to his WS and Muserskiy. I don't like Schneider at all, fortunately at the end of game on court was Howatson. Canada had better reception, serve and more blocks.

i dont think Russia lost on purpose, they were leading the tie -break 7-2...seems they underrated canada...

  • I wouldn't judge Yosifov based solely on his performance this match because hes having some health issues and was mostly off (a flu or smth from the long trip to ARG). He has proven to be a good blocker many times. It wasn't the speed of play IMO, it was rather De Cecco's variation that bothers him most. He was unable to read him that much and I would give credits to De Cecco for that rather than discrediting Victor. De Cecco is a genius IMO. He is changing the pace very quickly at the last moment, has a great variety and wise game plan. Every MB would have been distcated from that. It is normal that MBs are more successful at the end of net, rather than the middle. In the center they have to know the ball will come there, if they could read the setts well - it works. In case of De Cecco it is not always posible. Bulgaria has had major issues with ARG exactely because we are counting on the block, not on the defence, block is our major weapon, but couldn't read De Cecco's game for a very long time hence the block was not working. I was kind of shocked the first match in Sofia when we made so many blocks, it was unbelievable. Finnally we are starting to 'read' De Cecco a bit more, although he is still able to pul some tricks and surprises us.

I couldn't watch the game, so I can't say anything about Yosifov. He is an above average MB in general, playing with some health problems in Argentina right now, so I won't judge him at all, just like nadejda said.

If you remember well the analysis made by Plamen Konstantinov during the first game with Argentina, you would remember the mathematical "pattern" weakness of De Cecco ;) Of course, you are right, it takes some observation and studies to create the "pattern". And if the setter is world class indeed, he would change the game in key moments, trying to break his usual set rhythm to a more unfamiliar one. Vermiglio used to do something like this in his golden years.

Shorty back to the MB post. I will mention something briefly because the topic got little interest and I think it is interesting enough. Whether or not an MB is more successful at the ends of the net or in the middle varies. Both types of moves (to the sides and up, respectively) have their unique characteristics, but the one in the middle required less reaction time. The "first tempo" is fast, low, almost unstoppable if done right. Besides one tries to block it quite often not with fullest reach. If tactically prepared or with a great MB instinct, a player can still intervene. Blocking at the end of the net is as difficult as in the middle, but don't forget that the MB is not there alone and often the accompanying blocker gets the credit even if the MB gets there with a better and higher reach.

OK, this already sounds boring and it's too late :) Good job, Canada, once again! I wish I wouldn't have to work tomorrow in order to watch Bulgaria and Italy.

  • imo,Musersky is the best Russian player recently,he has a big potantial.

Muserskiy has potential not only as MB, but also as OPP, what he proved in London  I'm still so impressed by that performance ^^

Naaa, I doubt that ;) Russia are not that desperate to make some PhD model of how to eliminate Brazil. A clear underestimation of a 2-0 match situation led to a serious discomfort. Tomorrow Brazil will cause no surprise and things will go back to their usual rhythm.
