China gold, Cuba silver, Dominican Republic bronze in Beilun
BEILUN, China, June 1, 2007.- China finished in first place while Cuba and Dominican Republic finished in the second and third positions at the 2007 China Women’s International Cup in Beilun, a four-nation event in China.
In a match between unbeaten teams, China took the gold medal by defeating Cuba in five sets by scores of 25-18, 15-25, 18-25, 25-16, 15-11.
Li Juan was the best scorer for China with 16 points and Zhou Suhng and Xue Ming contributed 12 and 11 respectively. Cuban Yumilka Ruiz was the top scorer of the match with 18 tallies, Yanelis Santos chipped in 16 and Nancy Carrillo added 12.
In the match for the bronze medal, Dominican Republic edged the Netherlands 25-21, 20-25, 22-25, 25-17, 17-15.
Cosiris Rodriguez and Milagros Cabral had 19 and 17 points respectively for the Dominicans and Nurys Arias and Cindy Rondon each had 15.
China , who had earlier crushed the Dominican Republic and the Netherlands in straight sets, kept a perfect sheet. Cuba was the runner-up with a 2-1 win-loss record. The Dominican Republic (1-2) was third and the Netherlands (0-3) finished fourth
