Italy - Serie A1 2014/15

  • Modena won the golden set 15-13 against Piacenza! They managed to turn the situation around and they qualified to final four. Looking at the stats, great match for Picci  but also van Hecke did well (26 points).

    Conegliano is leading 10-7

  • Novara
down by at 18-13 leads a late surge powered by Hill’s three point serve rally and
two powerful back row kills to get close at 22-20 and then Braun leads the way
with a series of powerful kills and an excellent serve series to take it to 24-23
Novara and Gucci ends it with a block.
Novara steals the first set from Piacenza.

  • Piacenza takes the 18-15 lead but Novara fights back to
19-17 but then Piacenza closes out with 3 kills by Sorokaite, ace and block by
Di Iulio, and ends the set with two hitting errors by Novara. Piacenza is clearly the better team through
two sets but after letting Novara steal the first it goes into number three
    1-1.

  • Novara's pipe is such a weapon.. I have never seen a team using pipe attack so much, except Russia with Kosheleva and Turkey with Neriman.. Noemi is using it constantly and it's not only with off balls, she does it very well with both Klineman and Hill

  • Piacenza takes the 5-4 lead then Hill comes to serve and
leads an 8 point surge that includes one ace and a back row kill. Very effective service by Hill in this set
and Novara jumps out to a 12-5 lead. Piacenza never recovers and Novara spreads
the points out to the end with Hill, Klineman, and Gucci doing most of the
damage. Very strong set for Hill. We’ll see if Piacenza is broken or can rally
    back in set 4.

  • Piacenza takes the 8-4 lead then Hill comes to serve and
leads a 5 point surge that includes one ace and two pipe kills. Very effective service by Hill in this set
and Novara jumps back in with a 10-9 lead. The set goes back and forth with Hill and
Klineman leading Novara to an 18-16 lead when Braun comes up to serve. She triggers a nice 4 point surge that
includes an ace. But the real damage is
3 blocks in the final 7 point for Novara. Novara spreads the points around like
an epidemic of measles in the USA. Hill
finishes with a dink on a broken set for the end.

Nice team effort by Novara reminiscent of Team US in the
    World Championships. Solid blocking
especially by Gucci. Nice setting by
Signorile, she must be watching the Alisha Glass tapes. Braun and Klineman each
    having their moments to excel.

Fun match to watch with a lot of solid defensive play and
some long rallies. I will say it has
been nice to see Hill continue her growth after her disastrous season in Poland
last year. The big question was would
she be able to have a solid second club season and it looks like she is.

Her back row attack is a new weapon and one that Team US
seldom used so we’ll see if Karch watches his players club season. Hill’s attack IQ is clearly on the rise as
she is hitting very effectively off the hands in high double block situations
and doing some very nice soft directional spikes hitting open areas. Not the boom boom of Kim or Kosheleva but
very effective for her body style.

Here’s hoping Novara continues its winning and plays its way
into next year’s Champions League. It
would be great to see Novara keep the team together and bring in someone like Lucia
Bosetti as OH for added back row defense and depth and make an Italian League
    run at the championship.

  • It's true Hill is having a great season. Klineman is top-scorer but IMO Hill is Novara's best player. Being very good in both attack and reception is better than being great in just one and okay/poor in the other.

She is taking huge responsibility in reception and still being strong, and her digging has also improved. Should be very good for Team USA.

  • I think the thing that makes Kim Hill interesting is that
for Team USA she plays within a system that is designed for her unique skill
set. Karch’s QuicK offense sent many
sets to Hill with only one blocker or one approaching and she scored at a very
    high percentage in that environment.

He also relied upon her back row defense, digging,
    reception, passing, and serving. There
are very few girls her height that can go to the floor as effectively as
she. Remember she was a sand
all-American in college and had spent a fifth year playing strictly sand
volleyball which I think sharpened her reflexes and digging skills.

What was remarkable about her WC MVP was that she played
with such great consistency because coming into the tournament she was prone to
confidence collapses in a set once she started making errors. In fact I think Karch pulled her late in set
3 against Italy just for that reason.

For Team USA she is typically the 2nd or 3rd
option in her front row rotation and her strongest asset to the team is the
strength of both her front and back row play.
Klineman if you noticed does not play as an OH but as an opposite for
Team USA because her back row play is considered insufficient.

So the unanswered question coming into Novara was how she
would play in the Club environment. Would
it be a repeat of her Polish debut or a continuation of her WC play? Her recent play seems to suggest that she
will have a positive future in both Club and NT seasons.
