Turkish League 2014/15

  • evaluating Newcombe's performance , to consider similar team's players is more correct to me,keeping top team's players out of the comparison
think Sonja seems to be good at block (Starcevic from BJk a little better with less matches) but in other elements she is close or worse than the other players like Herreira,Starcevic,Nizetic,Malasevic etc..
if i had a strong team i woudnt take any of these palyers to my team.. :D

I would take Herrera. In fact I think she is really underrated. She always had good seasons in Brazil and was good this season too. Of course she is not a good passer, but she is a really strong hitter. Her team is also a little weaker, with a bad setter but i thibk she would be much more useful than Meijners for example. I am surprised she signed with Nilufer again because I expected her to sign with a better club

Herrera is really good attacker maybe in top three amongst the foreigner OH's after Kim and De la Cruz...maybe better than Vasileva and Meijners...but her reception is really weak! weaker than even Meijners and Wang

i would prefer Newcombe and Starcevic to Kristin Hildebrand in my team

  • Canter each of the players you listed are only better than Sonja in 1 category and she is far better than them in all other categories. Yes, Herrera is better in attack, Milasevic in reception. Nizetich was not better in anything. My comments were about her all around play and level. She posses all skills. Starcevic had too few matches and was unable to make a big enough difference, although I still like what she did this year.

Also I think it is more than fair to compare all players. They play the same competition in the same league. This should make sense. You can bend and twist it however you want. Its just my opinion

Nizetich's average attack percent is a little bit better than Newcombe's..

i mean if i had a team why should i have taken Newcome to my team ? > for her reception or her attack ? if i have De la Cruz/Kosheleva, i would want a very good defensive OH...or if i have Gözde/Larson/Bosetti then i would want a very good attacker...Newcombe is not both of them...for mid-level teams she could be a good player/option but for high level teams,i dont know.. :) :) i would take Herrera for her attack for example....

btw,why is Newcombe not in the nt of the states ?

  • Canter, I agree with you in some points and that is that i wouldn't take Newcombe to a top level team in Turkey.. She would be great in Italy or Poland IMO. What i dont agree on is how appreciate player who can do one thing better than the other, more than players who can do both.. There have allways been all around players but it's unfortunate that lately there are fewer and fewer. It easy to put one defensive and one offensive but wouldn't it be great if you can put all around players on the court.. Logan has always been good doing everything, in recent years her attack has gone down ofc because she is getting older butshe could always do it all.. Kim Y. K is also an example.. Sokolova was, Aury Cruz was a really good all around player some years ago.. Larson is, although her attack is not so great now.. USA was lucky to have 2 all around outsides on the court in 2012.. Now it more common to be a passer or a hitter, coaches also teach players that since they are young which is wrong IMO.. Just look at Kosheleva.. She is not a great passer of course but her coach decided to give her 0 responsibility to pass in Krasnodar and she would have to do it in NT now..

i think real all around players ,imo : was Sokolova in the past and is Kim YK at the present time....

  • btw..i dont want to be unjust to Newcombe...maybe she can do a very good job in a top team, who knows!

i liked Rhyliuk in Bjk (she was not that famous at that time i think)..now she is playing in a strong team and doing a good job..of course she used to have good matches as playing for BJk too..

  • in the past you can also include regla bell, ayevegiya artamonova and motoko obayasho

actually i dont know much about theirs period/era...i have been watching volleyball since 2003....i dont want to watch those old flu videos...if i catch some hd videos id like to watch those old star players too...

I don't think you're being unjust. I think you're spot on. For the same reason that Newcombe hasn't seen action in the USANT is the same reason she probably won't be picked up by a top team on the club scene. Yes, she has a good all around game but her game doesn't stand out comparatively to other players at her position. She can certainly have a successful professional club career but I doubt she'll ever play for a top club in a major role. That's no knock to Sonja, just a realistic assessment of her career prospects based on what she's done thus far.
