  • A disastrous start to the season for Noliko. Two defeats in as many games and an upcoming match against the CL participant Antwerpen. There is no coverage of the league, so we probably won't watch them before the Champions League starts. They have a very young squad, but results don't seem to defend the board's decision to rejuvenate the team. The scenario from the past season seems very likely to repeat itself. And they only got to participate in the CL thanks to a Wild Card, which, to be fair and square, they deserved based on their overall performance in the last more than 15 years.

This weekend, Maaseik finally won its first match against Antwerp 3 - 1.
From the stats, it seems Bjorn Höhne played a strong game for Maaseik (18/34, only 2 errors) and serve reception overall looks pretty good (57% positive, 45% excellent).
Tim Broshog added 6 kill blocks.
Off course Antwerp is struggling as well:
Marien Moreau was substituted in the second set (for Tom Van Walle), after scoring a poor 6/22 (27%) in attack.
Last year, Antwerp's biggest problem was its serve reception: now they turned Jorna from a libero into an outside hitter.
But, surprise, surprise... turns out his attacking skills are a bit lacking: 7/28 (25% 4 errors, 3x blocked).
That leaves Floris Van Rekom who delivered a very poor 8/31 (26% 3 errors, 4x blocked).
If your 3 main attackers are unable to score over 30% and commit errors like that, I'm not sure how you're supposed to win any games.

I haven't watched this game, so these stats could also mean there is something wrong with Van Harskamp's setting.

From what I've seen in the press: especially Moreau is getting criticism (supposed arrogance: e.g. last night seems he didn't participate in the team cheering on the court).

It's pretty clear that both teams will have a tough time in the upcoming Champions League.

  • Marien Moreau lost his place in the NT to Mory Sidibe and is overall not the same player he used to be before the injury he suffered. I cannot comment on his behaviour. Good to see Noliko on a normal path even if I was skeptical that it would happen just now against Antwerpen.

  • According to an arcticle in www.volleybalkrant.nl,
Noliko Maaseik has suspended libero Bert Derkoningen indefinitely for criticising (in "unacceptable" language) coach Erik Verstraeten in front of the whole team.
Maaseik is not doing well: their last CL-performance (0-3 loss against Perugia) was painful to watch.
So I can imagine there is plenty of opportunity for criticism.
However, Bert Derkoningen is somewhat of an odd character: he is not the best source to ventilate criticism and that boomeranged right in his face now.

I wasn't too impressed with his performance in the national team (World Championships in Poland - he was called in after Dejonckheere's injury). I hope that chapter is closed now.
I'm happy to see Dennis Deroey finally took up the libero-role again in Antwerp. I definitely consider him a better libero than Derkoningen. I hope he engages with the national team again (trade-off with his usual busy summer campaign on the beach).

  • Belgian Cup Final

    Antwerpen

    Volley Behappy2 Asse-Lennik - Precura Antwerpen 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-9)

Lennik: Overbeeke 14, Andringa 14; Antwerpen: Moreau 13

  • VC behappy2 Asse-Lennik completely trashed Topvolley Callant Antwerpen in the Cup Final. The Cup Final was the biggest volleyball event ever organised in Belgium with 13 000 spectators in the biggest stadium of Belgium (Sportpaleis in Antwerp (!) ). One hour and 17 minutes later the match already was over. Last set 25-9 and last five points all errors from players of Antwerp.

    Stats: http://telegraaf2.tss-sport.co…UP/&BVBH33-cup_REPORT.htm

    Some remarkable things:
    - Moreau (Antwerp) with 13 points best scorer for Antwerp, but only 31 % attack efficiency (he committed 13 errors in attack including 9 blocks)
    - Asse-Lennik made 17 blocks, Antwerp just 3
    - Poor performance of Antwerp outside hitters: Van Walle, Jorna and Van Rekom all made 8 points in total, Andringa and Baetens of Asse-Lennik made 24 points in total (3 times more than Antwerp)
    - Diefenbach (Asse-Lennik) somehow always touched the ball when he blocks and that have been rewarded with 6 kill blocks
    - 1993 was the last year Asse-Lennik won a prize in Belgian Volleyball (Championship title or Cup Final)
    - 1993 also was the year that the father of Seppe Baetens (Jo Baetens) deceased. Jo was in 1993 a volleyball player of Asse-Lennik, just like his son nowadays.
    - In the CEV Cup Asse-Lennik plays against Top Volley Callant Antwerpen! Hopefully the match will be more intense and the players of Antwerp can handle the pressure.

  • I'm happy to have witnessed this unique atmosphere live: first time to see a crowd of 13.000 for a volleyball game.

Unfortunately, Antwerp delivered an embarrasing performance .

In an interview a few weeks ago, Moreau expressed his ambition for the French national team. I can only hope Laurent Tillie didn't see his performance last night.
The contrast with Robin Overbeeke couldn't have been bigger.

I agree that the Antwerp outside hitters (Van Walle, Van Rekom, Jorna) didn't help either. Van Walle is systematically excluded from serve reception, which leaves the whole court for the libero (Deroey) and the other outside hitter.
Lennik was exploiting this very well.

Lennik played a very solid game, a "real" team playing with a lot of confidence (supported by a huge legion of Fans, all dressed in orange).
Looking forward to the play-offs: at this point, Lennik and Roeselare seem the most likely teams to decide on the title.

  • Final playoff

    Best of 5

A very impressive performance by Lennik's substitute Piotr Orczyk in the second game - 28 points, 83% in attack, 4 blocks, no serve errors. The third game is on Wednesday, April 29, in Roeselare.

  • what a sub by Orczyk in second game :cheesy:

    Wow, thats impressive.
But looking at his reception numbers you might get an idea, why he had to come from the bench 8)
