Men's World Championship 2018

  • Useless win for Argentina as they needed 3-0 or 3-1 to avoid 4th place and a "death group" with POL, RUS and maybe FRA in next round.

MVP was Poglajen, maybe he was motivated to play the country of his ancestors? who knows.

Conte and De Cecco are now bench warmers somehow, that sad part is that it's deserved...

  • Great win for Argentina, they fought back after falling behind.

They're still not out of the woods but this almost assures them a berth in the second round. Japan will need to take the full points if they want to advance instead of Argentina which only needs two sets.

Favorite players: M: Maxim Mikhaylov, Murilo, Serginho, Aaron Russell, Otavio, Simone Giannelli, Ivan Zaytsev, Tsvetan Sokolov, Michał Kubiak, Mariusz Wlazly, Pawel Zagummy W: Sheilla, Zhu Ting, Natalia, Fe Garay, Fofao, Gabi, Thaisa, Foluke Akinradewo, Wei Qiuyue, Ding Xia, Carli Lloyd, Fabi, Natalia Goncharova, Yuko Sano, Saoris Kimura and Sakoda

  • POL, RUS and maybe FRA in next round.

RUS still have to beat Serbia to be second... Now is third (one point less, if I recall well).

If I did the math well, with Argentina victory, Italy will advance as first even if they'll lose 3-0 vs Slovenia.

Of course we still need as many points as we can get (especially considering the potential pool waiting for us...).

  • about CHN:

i guess the improvement the team made this year under lozano got people expecting more from this team (including beating ARG and FRA in the VNL -- although it was a B french team). i was astounded when someone wrote that they were the leading team in blocks at these WCh... from the little i saw, i thought their blocking, defense and service reception were pretty bad... when the pass is good, the middle attack is pretty efficient and of course, jiang chuan is excellent as OPP when out of system. in some ways, they are like the DOM women, a very tall team but lacking in some basic skills and prone to stupid mistakes...

one could also say CHN drew a very tough group, and had they faced teams like CMR, TUN, CUB, PUR or DOM, they might not have gone winless. OTOH, who knows, they might have lost to them too!

it's also disappointing because, unlike JPN, they do not lack in height to face the top teams (CHN women's team is one of the tallest in the world). the starting setter (mao) is 200 cm tall, and the MBs are also quite tall, and jiang chuan is 205. i guess lozano might not last long in this job. i noticed in the TOs, the players don't seem to be paying much attention to what he has to say (again, in contrast with JPN and blain, who seem to have a much better rapport).

btw, at the recent asian games, CHN B team finished 9th! even worse, KAZ (which finished 2nd at the last asian ch.) finished 17th!!!!!!

  • You bring your wins and points to second round so a loss tomorrow will likely eliminate France from Final Six.

I’m very curious what De Cecco’s problem is. First he abruptly got married in the middle of the final series without the presence of his family then has taken whole summer to deal with a personal problem . It is interesting that he is getting free pass by Argentian fans .

BTW ; do you think Zaytsev’s target video ,#sorrynotsorry, a bit offensive to De Cecco?

  • I’m very curious what De Cecco’s problem is.

Velasco said "He said he's fine, but his mind is elsewhere".

I'm very sorry for him :(

I think they played together for 2 years, so I a gentle tease is a very normal things (it wouldn't be if he didn't personally know the 'victim'), especially after a 'captain derby'.

Still, I wondered if he knows what problem Luciano had...

It France'll finish third it seems like an hard job to get to the final6...

  • Maybe De Cecco is changing citizenship like Orduña?

  • France cannot beat Canada on sets ratio if tied on wins and points

  • brahmin, I didn't understand. Is it just a specific, or a correction?

If France will beat Canada 3-0 or 3-1, they'll be ahed of them.

Ps anyway I didn't do the math, just copied it from volleyball.it with a bit of correction on Serbia/Russia (I actually forgot the correction in pool H) and Belgio/Slovenia: I considered these two couple of teams like 'having even chance of being 2nd/3rd', while them said Slovenia and Russia are more chance to be 2nd than respectively Belgio and Serbia.

  • Maybe De Cecco is changing citizenship like Orduña?

Orduna did that because he hasn't been good enough to play for Argentina, so he uses his italian citizenship to get signed easier by italian clubs.

If De Cecco changes something, then it means he's planning to not play international volleyball anymore (also, he's already 30). I see him retiring soon, but I would like to think he wants to try one more olympics.

He said "tied in points and wins", if France wins 3-0 or 3-1 they will be tied in wins but not in points: Canada will have 9 and France 11. He's talking about the case in which France wins 3-2, they will be tied in both but Canada will still have better set ratio.

  • Iran also messed up by losing an important point in their last match of the preliminaries.

Favorite players: M: Maxim Mikhaylov, Murilo, Serginho, Aaron Russell, Otavio, Simone Giannelli, Ivan Zaytsev, Tsvetan Sokolov, Michał Kubiak, Mariusz Wlazly, Pawel Zagummy W: Sheilla, Zhu Ting, Natalia, Fe Garay, Fofao, Gabi, Thaisa, Foluke Akinradewo, Wei Qiuyue, Ding Xia, Carli Lloyd, Fabi, Natalia Goncharova, Yuko Sano, Saoris Kimura and Sakoda

  • Argentina is such a unstable team. They could compete against Italy in one match, but then in the verge to lose a set against Dominican Republic or lost against an already eliminated Japan team.

It should be quite frustrating for Velasco. Btw...how could you set the last ball to Lima? :gone:

I am happy that Argentina qualified to the next round, however, congrats to Japan for their effort.
