  • Shanghai Golden Age cemented their supremacy by claiming their 12th league title, with a 3-0 (25-18, 27-25, 25-19) win over Beijing Auto in the China Men’s Volleyball League finals at Beijing Guangcai Stadium on Saturday.

After losing twice to Shanghai, regular season champions Beijing knew they had to win the match in front of their home fans. In the end, Beijing Auto were not able to stop the rampaging Shanghai squad.

Shanghai showed a promising performance and led in the first set. It was a closely fought encounter throughout the second set, which had 10 deadlocks. However, Beijing failed to deliver in the crucial moments and conceded the second set 27-25. The third set saw Italian players Cristian Savani and Giulio Sabbi dominate the match to help Shanghai seal the straight-set victory 25-19.

Both squads were under heavy pressure and gave away points on errors, where Shanghai got 32 points, while Beijing with 27 points.

Thomas Edgar topped all scorers with 24 points but could not lift his team to victory. On the opposite side, Sabbi exploded with 18 points but were well-supported by Savani with eight markers and Dai Qinyao with five points.

Edgar led the scoring table with a total of 483 points to bag the Most Valuable Player award. Former Chinese national team player Shen Qiong, who has been Shanghai’s coach for two years already, received the award for Best Coach for the second time in a row for helping his team to win the title.

“We gained this success as a team,” coach Shen said. “This victory is particularly meaningful because we have gone through a tough time with injuries, but we still managed to form a good team. Our team did well and gave an impressive performance to our fans.”

Shanghai have won the Chinese men’s national league title twelve times since 1999. The team dominated from 1999 to 2000, and a long title-winning streak in 2003 to 2012. After missing the title in 2013 and 2014 to Beijing, they redeemed themselves in the 2015 season.
